Father and daughter artists Kelcy and Arpege Taratoa

Painter Kelcy Taratoa and his video artist and curator daughter Arpege are working side by side at Tauranga Art Gallery, where Kelcy's showing early work through to new site-specific art commissioned by the gallery. But while Arpege knows her father's work very well, she's co-curating a show in another part of the building that commemorates the Battle of Gate Pa. This exhibition also means a lot to both of them as their ancestor was a prominent figure in that battle, Henare Taratoa. In his work Kelcy explores cultural identity in 21st century Aotearoa New Zealand. And over the years he's also looked at issues like surveillance and privacy, and environmental threats. His new work for the 7-metre-high atrium walls of the Tauranga Art Gallery references traditional Tukutuku panels. But Lynn Freeman spoke first with Arpege Taratoa about her earliest memories of her father's studio:
