This week, Sara and Kyle sit down with Bill Schultheiss (Director of Sustainable Safety, Vice President) and Rebecca Sanders (Research Lead & Senior Planner) from Toole Design Group. Last year, Bill and Rebecca co-authored (along with TDG President, Jennifer Toole) a research paper diving into the development of the AASHTO Guide for the Development of Bicycle Facilities and the role that the vehicular cycling movement played in shaping bicycle infrastructure design beginning in the early 1970’s. The historical perspective on the decisions made to influence how bikeways are designed leads to a conversation about power, voice, privilege, and gender dynamics in bicycle advocacy as well as a discussion regarding the true nature of compromise in decision-making.
