Submit ReviewThom sits down with Soriah, a Tuvan Throat Singer who has played with an incredibly diverse group of folks, including Rob Wynia of Floater and David J from Bauhaus. The name “Soriah” is a spirit suit worn for performance: A state of trance and gnosis that he gets into during his performances. We both agreed that the feeling from performing music had the potential to become “spiritual” in the sense that there are few words that can describe the feeling it brings.
We learn that his father was part of Los Sputniks, a mexican rock band that was popular in Mexico City during the mid-60’s, so music always played a part in Soriah’s life. We also learn how Jets and Airplane noises played a part as well. Soriah was exposed to Tuvan Throat Singing from a mix CD given to him by a friend. He then developed this passion the ended up with him meeting and learning from Tuvan throat singer and eventually a trip to Tuva was in order.
Soriah also created a record with Daniel Riddle at Mazinga Studios. Soriah tells us about what Tuva is like and some interesting history and stories of the Tuvan folks. Enjoy this really great interview with a passionate and talented musician.
