On May 4, 1983, Melody returned home after she had been on a fishing trip with her family. Her brother, Randall, dropped her off at her home, and she asked if he would like to stay the night, which apparently was a regular occurrence for the close knit siblings. That night, however, he decided not to stay. Melody climbed out of the car at 10:30 pm and walked toward her well-lit house. When she arrived, the door was ajar, and her brother noticed there was a man standing in her doorway, assuming the man was Paul. Melody’s brother left, knowing his sister was safely at home with her husband.
