Thom sits down with Carey Rich, vocalist and bass player for the band Jollymon. Thom learns how Jollymon chose to get back together in 2016. We talk about how Carey got into music and how his parents were not only influential, but how they supported him learning music.

Carey struggled in school but by 11th grade was sent to Washington DC where he learned theory on drums, guitar and bass. His music teacher in High School suggested that he come out to the West Coast. And Carey did! He tells a story about staying with some “nuclear hippies” led him from Portland to Eugene...Yes, it’s a good story about a community towel.

Carey tells the tale of how he answered an ad at a music store (Karl’s ad), Karl knew Greg and they ended up jamming together and starting a band. Carey tells us how they chose the name “Jollymon” in quick preparation for a show at what would soon become “John Henry’s”, a classic Eugene live-music staple.

Carey calls Jollymon both “Lucky” and “Charmed”. He tells the story of playing one epic party in Portland where they caught the eye of Sweaty Nipples, who got them to open a Valentine’s Day WOW Hall show. This quickly propelled them to headlining large local venues like Crystal Ballroom and Roseland (both in Portland).

Carey talks about their new Download “Tsunami” and we play the entire song on the Podcast. This was a fun conversation that kept us both laughing. Enjoy this interstellar Space Metal Sermon with my friend Carey Rich.
