“Much has been said and written about lately concerning two dilapidated specimens of humanity…who have been representing themselves as man and wife, and call themselves Joseph Lobdell and Mrs. Lobdell”.
These were the words printed in a local Pennsylvania paper concerning a couple who didn’t quite fit the traditional molds, especially at the end of the 19th century. This episode focuses on a
transgender man who was one of the most colorful characters of the 1800’s and whose story would affect medical research for half a century. From his time as “the female huntress of Delaware Country”, to his era as a traveling preacher, to his final decade in a mental institute for refusing to deny his identity, Joseph Lobdell lived a very full life.
