After the massive success of THE MATRIX, expectations were high for the Wachowskis follow ups.

When the MATRIX sequels — THE MATRIX RELOADED and THE MATRIX REVOLUTIONS — were released 6 months apart in the summer and winter of 2003, they were massively successful from a financial standpoint, but left many fans disappointed, confused, and underwhelmed.
