She’s a famous nutritionist and beauty expert who changed the world with her delicious and detoxifying Glowing Green Smoothie. Kimberly has amazing rad beauty tips from her many bestsellers — The Beauty Detox Solution, The Beauty Detox Foods and The Beauty Detox Power and her newest: Radical Beauty, which she co-authored with Deepak Chopra. There’s a reason so many celebrities flock to Kimberly as the go-to girl for health and wellness — she makes it all fun and accessible, full of common sense and ancient wisdom.

Kimberly calls for us to get back in touch with our wisdom and roots, detox from processed foods and negative thoughts, and develop beauty from within. She talks with Sheri and Nancy about her own wellness rituals in the morning and evening, how the energy of the foods we choose directly affects our own energy, and how to be more present and mindful when it comes to all the choices we make, since we are not just what we eat, but what we digest and assimilate. And she shares some glowy face mask ideas with ingredients you probably have in your fridge right now.

So slather some avocado on your face, grab your skin brush and get rad-ly beautiful with us.

Takeaways

[2:00] Kimberly’s first book, The Beauty Detox Solution, came out in 2011. She was living in NYC at the time and created what would that later became her world-famous Glowing Green Smoothie. (Her secret weapon: she blends instead of juicing.) Drink it every morning to energize your day. She makes if for Sheri and Nancy and they are hooked.

[3:06] Kimberly’s morning ritual is to start with hot water and lemon, and a big glass of the Glowing Green Smoothie.

[3:38] Although many people and use juices and smoothies interchangeably, they are very different. Both are healing and detoxifying, but smoothies keep all the fiber and vital nutrients intact.

[4:29] To prepare yourself a big batch of the Glowing Green Smoothie, the magic ingredients are: two cups of water, 70% greens (romaine, spinach, cilantro, parsley, celery), banana and apple/pear and a peeled and cut lemon.

[6:54] Kimberly went into college pre-med but discovered after interning at a hospital that it wasn’t her true calling. She then backpacked around the world by herself for three years, spending time predominantly in Asia and Africa. Separating herself out of the Western world gave her a whole new look at health and wellness and the importance of eating whole foods.

[10:07] When we treat our body right, we reconnect with our true nature and with our soul. Sheri and Nancy share that they both feel off when eating a ton of processed or mass-produced food, and the name of the game is finding a personal recipe of health and nutrition that makes sense to us as spiritual individuals.

[13:33] To Kimberly, wellness is not a number or how much you weigh, but how connected you are with yourself and how you feel internally. She too is evolving and shifting her own personal recipe.

[17:22] The research coming out on the gut-brain connection shows us how much of our mood and mental health depends on a healthy gut microbiome. Stress and shame also affect our hormones and fat storage, so the more relaxed and accepting you are, the easier it is to connect with your inner guidance.

[19:58] We are everything that we digest and assimilate. The energy of the foods we consume blends into our being and affects our inner and outer world. Plus, it’s just beautiful and restorative to look at a vibrant bowl of overflowing fruit or a bouquet of green vegetables from the Farmers’ Market.

[21:52] Kimberly says that beauty isn’t just about superficial features; it’s the ability to express your uniqueness, magnetic energy, and highest potential out to the world. Confidence and self-assuredness are beautiful, and people usually respond more to that then a “beautiful” person scowling in the corner.

[22:12] Kimberly also brings some Pillar talk to the podcast, with her The Six Pillars of Radical Beauty:

  1. 1. Spirituality
  2. 2. Tuning In
  3. 3. Connection with Nature
  4. 4. How You Move
  5. 5. How You Take Care of Your Skin
  6. 6. How You Eat
  7. [23:49] One of the most important aspects of wellness is sleep. It is a cornerstone of health that usually gets overlooked or diminished. The hour before sleep should be a time to prepare for deep rejuvenation, and for our brain to balance and detox itself. One great way to honor the magic time before bed is to make a delicious elixir. Kimberly’s elixir of choice is warmed almond or hemp milk, which provides the amino acid tryptophan, beneficial for good sleep and building serotonin. She adds powdered turmeric, sliced ginger and cinnamon for extra boosts of immunity and endocrine support.
  8. [30:13] Kimberly shares some simple beauty tweaks that have a huge impact: a silk pillowcase to maintain hair health and skin elasticity, celery and chard to remedy under eye bags, and fresh mask masks with pineapple, papaya, avocado, and honey.
  9. [36:01] Kimberly knows not to dare take away people’s coffee from them but does ask that when you can, choose organic. Nancy is a tried and true coffee lover, and Kimberly suggests in the morning she should hydrate with hot water and lemon first, then separate with coffee and green smoothie by 25-30 minutes.
  10. [39:26] Dry skin brushing is great tool to keep next to your shower, as it supports lymph detoxification. When skin brushing, brush strokes towards your heart to get the blood flowing to the heart.
  11. [42:44] Healthy hair starts from the inside out. In her book Radical Beauty, Kimberly provides a hair mask to kick hair growth into motion, but good nutrition and hydration is also key to luscious locks.
  12. [43:49] Kimberly will be launching a lifestyle brand called Soluna, that encompasses all the touch points of health and beauty, including a feel-good circle to help others go deeper in connecting with their inner wisdom and self-acceptance.
