Simply waking up in the morning and beginning each day with a self-selected list “non-negotiables” — things we do, or eat, or focus on before we pick up our phones or check our emails — can help us be responsive instead of reactive, calm instead of stressed, and in control of our own stories.

[19:55] Charles shares his own struggles with food and emotional eating. Growing up, he used food to numb himself from negative feelings, but on some level he knew that healing was an inside job from being exposed to meditation and Eastern healing practices at a young age.

[29:37] Observing negative self-talk is one of the steps to moving away from a fear-based, restrictive mindset to a kinder and more realistic one. When we shift the energy of our present story, it changes the energy of the past. The stories we tell ourselves repeatedly changes the story we have told our whole life. Sheri mentions that for women, especially in mid-life, the ‘beauty story’ is extremely important. Nancy agrees and shares that growing up even though she felt bookish and awkward, her friends viewed her as being too smart and too cool to even sweat the small stuff like prom dates and boy drama.
[43:15] It’s important to develop your non-negotiables each morning before you check in with the world and start giving away your energy. Charles wakes up early to get his non-negotiables accomplished; they are: reading something positive, eating something nourishing, mindful movement, and gratitude. Non-negotiables can be a morning walk, a green smoothie, or taking a moment to feel gratitude, whatever it is that connects you with your spirit.
[57:02] When you take this time each morning, even if it’s just 10 minutes, you will feel more centered and able to handle stress. Which is helpful for our already overtaxed adrenal glands, and one of the first things Charles looks at when helping his clients lose weight.
