Celebrity chef and wellness entrepreneur, Charles Chen, asks us: what are we feeding ourselves? Is it nourishing, feel-good food, or junk that leave us tired, wired, and off track? And what kind of thoughts and habits are shaping our lives? Are they contributing to who we want to be, or taking way from our experience? Today’s episode is chock full of tips and tricks to help us get a grasp on our food, thoughts and habits so that we can feel good, and live well.

Charles, host of the wildly popular #KitchenHustle, is on a mission to help others reach levels of self-connection and health they may not have thought possible. He shares his own very intimate story of shedding shame and pounds (more than 100!) on his spiritual path to joy.  Simply waking up in the morning and beginning each day with a self-selected list “non-negotiables” — things we do, or eat, or focus on before we pick up our phones or check our emails — can help us be responsive instead of reactive, calm instead of stressed, and in control of our own stories.

Takeaways

[1:07] After Sheri and Nancy’s last sleepover party, Nancy was super inspired to get serious about the four main activities that make a noticeable difference in her life: working out, eating clean and not drinking, meditating twice a day, and rising early. Instead of having an “all or nothing” attitude that sabotages any progress at all, she borrowed a page from Jerry Seinfeld’s method of consistency and productivity — have a giant calendar every day that you put an “X” on after you do the habit or action you are trying to create (his was writing a joke each day). Your job is just to keep the chain of X’s going, and if you break it once, start over and keep going. No judgment, no story surrounding it, just completing the action and marking it with a big “X.”

[10:41] Charles shares the fateful string of happenings that led him to This is Fifty with Sheri and Nancy — it started with him taking an Instagram photo on the streets of New York, to a “Dinner with the Dead” party in Los Angeles where he met Sheri, to agreeing to be a special guest on the podcast.

[15:14] Clean eating and healthy foods are extremely important, but the #KitchenHustle life is so much more. It’s about being stewards of our own well being and connecting Health & Wellness with everything we do.

[19:55] Charles shares his own struggles with food and emotional eating. Growing up, he used food to numb himself from negative feelings, but on some level he knew that healing was an inside job from being exposed to meditation and Eastern healing practices at a young age.

[26:07] Charles encourages us to change up the food we eat, visit the farmers market regularly and learn as much as possible about food as medicine.

[29:37] Observing negative self-talk is one of the steps to moving away from a fear-based, restrictive mindset to a kinder and more realistic one. When we shift the energy of our present story, it changes the energy of the past. The stories we tell ourselves repeatedly changes the story we have told our whole life. Sheri mentions that for women, especially in mid-life, the ‘beauty story’ is extremely important. Nancy agrees and shares that growing up even though she felt bookish and awkward, her friends viewed her as being too smart and too cool to even sweat the small stuff like prom dates and boy drama.

[43:15] It’s important to develop your non-negotiables each morning before you check in with the world and start giving away your energy. Charles wakes up early to get his non-negotiables accomplished; they are: reading something positive, eating something nourishing, mindful movement, and gratitude. Non-negotiables can be a morning walk, a green smoothie, or taking a moment to feel gratitude, whatever it is that connects you with your spirit.

[57:02] When you take this time each morning, even if it’s just 10 minutes, you will feel more centered and able to handle stress. Which is helpful for our already overtaxed adrenal glands, and one of the first things Charles looks at when helping his clients lose weight.

[55:01] When you are tending to your energy and purpose, you may have friends, jobs or romantic partners that no longer serve you drop off or fade away.
