Submit ReviewConnie Allen is a former Hasidic Jewish woman who was born into an ultra-orthodox Jewish family in Brooklyn, New York and raised in the Satmar sect of Judaism. At 21, Connie escaped the community and a marriage she no longer wanted part of and took her young son to start a new life in a society she barely knew.
During this period she found exercise and running - young women in her former community were prevented from doing any physical exercise - and found this a source of strength. Now, Connie regularly competes in marathons and ultras and her story is finally being told.
In this episode, Jody and David speak to Connie about her strict upbringing, the experiences that led to her deciding to leave the community, how she finally began the process and how fitness and running gave her a focus.
This is a fascinating episode with Connie who is amazingly open about her experience.
Enjoy!
