In 1961 Elizabeth Taylor won her first Academy Award for BUtterfield 8 or as Elizabeth referred to it: “piece of shit.” This movie was basically 2 hours of slut shaming Taylor because at the time she had an affair/had married Eddie Fisher aka Debbie Reynolds’ husband, aka Princess Leia’s Dad. Elizabeth Taylor was still under contract with MGM for one more film and she was forced to do this movie about a, well, classy-ish call girl (hooker) and what a lifestyle of sexuality would do to a woman (she dies). Taylor also almost died from an emergency tracheotomy leading up to the awards so she received a lot of sympathy votes. Shirley MacLaine was nominated that year for The Apartment and famously said she lost the Oscar to a tracheotomy. Also nominated that year was Melina Mercouri for Never on Sunday (another story about a hooker), Greer Garson as Eleanor Roosevelt in Sunrise at Campobello, and Deborah Kerr in The Sundowners. I found this to be a very tough year to select a winner! Join host Kyle Brownrigg with guest host Bil Antoniou as they discuss.
