We’ve been previewing Da 5 Bloods for what seems like forever, and we are big fans of Spike Lee’s entire filmography. So it’s safe to say that in this vacuum of good movies, we had the highest hopes for this one. The result is a surprisingly mixed review from the Mikes, but whatever our takes, we got a whole lotta movie, and it was a terrific discussion.
As always, you get a full non-spoiler review first. We introduce the film’s cast & crew, comment on it’s early reception, and then breakdown the excellent production values & performances before offering some mixed thoughts on the script and some cautiously optimistic takes on the Oscars chances in non-spoilers. Then we give you a spoiling warning before breaking down all the big movements of the plot, including our bests & worsts in the latter half of the show.
Which elements of the film have the best chance at Oscar nominations? How did Netflix do as a studio on this one? And is Delroy Lindo as good as advertised? We break it all down in this review.
Stay tuned for our coverage of the news of the film world. We have huge stories concerning the Academy (which we introduced atop this episode), Tenet, streaming services, and much more to discuss in an upcoming Oscar Race Checkpoint episode. But next up is our review of The King of Staten Island from Judd Apatow.
