He created Sherlock Holmes, the world's most famous detective. He also believed in fairies and magic. Throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's literary creation, Sherlock Holmes, took the world by storm and became one of the most popular characters of all time. Holmes was known for his dedication to science and his brilliant deduction skills, and the man who created him equally valued these skills and - by many accounts - largely based the character on himself. However, as his life progressed he lost interest in Holmes, and instead became passionate about studying the paranormal, psychics and mediums, and literal fairies.
