AI-powered college advising tools like AVA are gaining popularity and promising to assist high school students in their college admissions journey. AVA, an artificial intelligence-powered college counseling assistant, was introduced during a virtual roundtable held by the College Guidance Network (CGN). Supporters argue that these tools can provide guidance and support for students 24/7 and alleviate the workload of overworked counselors. However, critics worry that they may disadvantage students who need personalized counseling. The National Association of College Admissions Counselors (NACAC) partnered with CGN to launch AVA, aiming to bridge the equity gap in college counseling. Ethical concerns and racial bias are also being discussed with the use of AI chatbots.
