Dr. B is back in today’s episode with Molly for part two all about gut health. In this episode, Molly starts out with hard-hitting questions about what the problem is behind our gut health–what are the things that we do that completely wreck our gut microbiome? Dr. B breaks it down to these factors: saturated fat, sugar (including flours), salts, processed foods, alcohol, and Molly’s topic of choice, artificial sweeteners.

The episode shifts when the two start discussing how our dietary choices influence our emotions–rather than what you crave, it becomes a question of *why* you crave. If the latter half of this episode had a theme it could be summed up by the phrase “progress over perfection.” This mantra propels the discussion to center around some quick tips on how to improve our gut health that include: eating a diversity of plants, a minimum of seven hours of sleep, a consistent sleep schedule, early dinner time, and no screen time before bed.

Episode Quotes

  • “In less than 24 hours after a meal, you are already changing your gut microbiome.” –Dr. Will Bulsiewicz
  • “I think one of the main problems people have in their relationship with food is that they don’t know how to make mistakes.” –Molly Carmel

Key Highlights

  • Everyone has a past journey that will influence their future relationship with food and gut health.
  • When our dietary choices can affect our gut microbiome in less than 24 hours, choosing what we eat is truly an act of self-love.
  • Anywhere we can start to improve our relationship with food is going to be a beautiful movement toward a full expression of health.
  • Because perfection does not exist, striving to achieve it can be damaging and cause stress and anxiety– two other factors that affect our gut health.
  • According to some preliminary studies, our gut microbiome can even be linked to controlling our impulses.
  • The values we place importance on in our lives influence how we interact with food and our gut health.
  • At the end of the day, all we can do is the best we can. Keeping that in mind, mistakes are inevitable but not so powerful that they wreck our progress.
