Classic Marvel Star Wars Comics Issue 37 "IN MORTAL COMBAT" (April 1980) totes itself as the final issue before The Empire Strikes Back adaptation. Hence, several storylines wrap up and we see an epilogue that returns Han and Chewie to the Rebels and a few other Empire set-ups. But most importantly, Luke and Darth Vader battle it out in a lethal Crystal Forest!!

Classic Marvel Star Wars Comics #37 “In Mortal Combat" Description:

 

Title: "In Mortal Combat" Release Date: April 22, 1980 Writer: Archie Goodwin Artwork: Carmine Infantino, Gene Day, Nel Yomtov Cover Art: Carmine Infantino, Bob Wiacek Editors: Jim Shooter, Archie Goodwin

 

Synopsis:

 

Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader enter the dangerous Crystal Valley, the location of their epic lightsaber battle. Arranged by Domina Tagge, she plans to not only have Luke killed, but Vader as well since he was a long- time rival of her brother Baron Orman Tagge. 

 

Held at blaster point, the Baron forces Han to bring him to Monastery to save his sister from corruption. When the Falcon comes to a bumpy stop, Han and Leia subdue the Orman, but he escapes when incoming TIE fighters begin firing on the Falcon. Orman enters the Crystal Valley and confronts Vader. The dark lord reveals to Orman that his sister is not as innocent as he believes. Vader decides not to kill him since he has one final task to fulfill.
