Augusta Avallone is a treasure-trove of sci-fi costume knowledge, and a talented seamstress! She worked in the costume departments of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Star Trek Picard S3, and Loki. She also hosts a great panel, “History of Sci-Fi Costumes” which we saw at WonderCon and she tours around to many conventions. Costumes speak to the audience and tell them exactly what you need to know about characters. From natural fabrics and armor to lamé and spandex, science fiction has a rich history in the manner characters are represented. We learn about this history, and dive deep into the costume departments of all the shows she’s worked on.

 

Then, we take a turn and talk about Augusta’s second career - as a Burlesque dancer! This is quite the episode.

When you first saw Jabba the Hutt in Return of the Jedi, did you have an instant reaction to his look? We can thank John Coppinger for being an intrinsic part of that response. He also puppeteered Jabba’s eyes on set every chance he got. What amazing stories! John also came back to work on, and perform, many characters in The Phantom Menace. His resume includes the first three Harry Potter films, The Fifth Element, The Dark Crystal and more.

It is always exciting to speak with someone involved in the original Star Wars trilogy who can give us first-hand stories of what it was really like to work on these epic films. Alan Fying was a Stormtrooper, Snowtrooper, and a Hoth Soldier in The Empire Strikes Back, and an Imperial Officer in Return of the Jedi. He shares never-before-heard, knock-your-socks-off stories about the making of Star Wars. On January 27th, Disneyland hosted the kick-off celebration for the Walt Disney Company’s 100th Anniversary!! New statues & decor, Nighttime Spectaculars, food, merchandise, and a NEW attraction (for Disneyland) debuted and we were there to celebrate. To share in the excitement, Mike Celestino from Laughingplace.com and Who’s the Bossk podcast is back to share his experience from the special Press Event held that week. We start our discussion with Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway - the perfect new attraction for Toon Town. Then we touch on some of the surprising missteps and typos present on Disney100 signage. What?!! Have a listen and tell us what you think about all the new, shiny things! 

 

We round out our show with a tribute to Cindy Williams. 2023 hit another low last Wednesday, January 25th, when we lost another big piece of Richard’s childhood when Cindy Williams passed away at the age of 75. Her biggest claim to fame was playing Shirley Feeney in Laverne and Shirley, A revolutionary show at the time which ran from 1976-1983, where 2 females lead the cast. Let’s reminisce…

Synopsis:

 

This issue continues the official six issue adaptation of Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back. It begins with Luke in recovering from his encounter with a wampa, and a near-kiss and then full kiss with Princess Leia. Then the battle begins as the Rebels spot Imperial walkers. Luke and Wedge take out an AT-AT with harpoons and tow cables, and the issue ends with Luke shot down and he falls into the path of an AT-AT.

2023 started off with a bang on Disney+ with Season 2 of Star Wars: The Bad Batch! Tricia Barr (Fangirls Going Rogue / FanGIRL Blog) and BJ Priester (FanGIRL Blog) join us to review the premiere episodes “Spoils of War” and “Ruins of War”.

We just got back from Walt Disney World, we still have jet lag, but we are buzzing with excitement and can’t wait to share our Life Day experiences as we take a Cosmic Rewind back to our Small World Vacation! 

 

We visited the Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Animal Kingdom, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, then we raced home to Disneyland. That's 5 Disney parks in one week, and both Galaxy’s Edge’s in one day! And we had Skywalker meet-up on Life Day.And we’ll go over the Skywalker meet-up.

Are you ready for ANDOR?? This 4th live-action Star Wars series airs the first three episodes on September 21, 2022, and we've been waiting almost two months to share our review with you!! We hope to answer a very important question - whether to cuss or not in the Star Wars universe.

 

This episode is broken up into two sections - the first is a spoiler-free section that contains an overview of the series, plus the various characters and places to know before you watch. This section also contains part of a Roundtable interview with Adria Arjona, who plays Bix Caleen. She shares some great insight into her character and the town of Ferrix. At 40:43, we get into the spoiler discussion which contains major plot points for the first three episodes. So make sure to listen only after you've watched all three.

 

ANDOR Synopsis 

 

Created by Academy Award and BAFTA-nominated writer/director/producer Tony Gilroy, ANDOR takes place around five years before ROGUE ONE. This series answers the question: How does Cassian become a Rebel hero? ANDOR follows both the Rebel cells and Imperial Security officers to show what the galaxy and people were like between REVENGE OF THE SITH and A NEW HOPE. It's an era filled with danger, deception, and intrigue.

A refugee from the planet Kenari, he has made his home on Ferrix for several years. Ferrix is a small blue-collar planet with a really strong community. It is not part of the Empire. Cassian owes money to everybody, he has a string of ex-girlfriends, and his mom is on his case all the time because he has not lived up to his potential.

She is a motherly figure in Cassian's life. She has been a prosperous businesswoman on Ferrix and now she is respected but aging. Cassian is a disappointment to her.

Bix owns a salvage yard on Ferrix, and also has had a romantic history with Cassian. Though it’s clear they are ex’s, they still care about each other. She's hard-working, handy, and strong.

He is part of a Rebel Cell with Mon Mothma, and both disguise themselves as someone else to get by in heavily Imperial places like Coruscant. According to Tony Gilroy, Luthen "is the master puppeteer of our show. He is the character that links many characters, and he comes at the revolution with an incredible intensity."

She is an Imperial senator, working her way into becoming the Rebel leader we know from RETURN OF THE JEDI and other series and films. This series allows us to explore what she is like in her day-to-day life. Her home on Coruscant, how she is a very public figure with a very private secret of supporting the Rebellion.

Syril is Deputy Inspector for the corporate authority on Morlana One. A Pre-Mor employee that takes great pride in his job and his uniform. His journey will lead him to be the primary antagonist for Cassian.

Dedra is an ambitious Supervisor with the Imperial Security Bureau (ISB). Her main focus is to find patterns of Rebel activity and subvert them. She is also a primary antagonist for Cassian.

This security firm oversees the planet of Ferrix, among others. Before the Empire has complete occupation, they will use the current security and police infrastructure already in place. One of the supervisors is Syril Karn (the main antagonist) who really wants to prove himself to the Empire and capture Cassian, but things don’t always go his way.

R2-D2 and C-3PO visited Sesame Street in 1980, and now we’re going to discuss all 5 TV segments with someone who was there: Craig Miller, Director of Fan Relations for Lucasfilm!

 

We are always excited to have our friend Craig Miller on the show. His years at Lucasfilm are well documented in his book, Star Wars Memories: My Time in the (Death Star) Trenches. Some of these stories include how he instigated Star Wars on Sesame Street as part of a mandate to keep Star Wars in the general zeitgeist between 1977 and 1980 (when Empire Strikes Back was released).

Even though we are just under a month until the premiere of Star Wars: ANDOR on Disney+, we are going to whet your appetite here with audio and our thoughts from the virtual press day! Not only did we learn a lot from a virtual press conference, Sarah and Richard joined Star Wars fan site roundtables featuring the cast, including Diego Luna. 

 

While it was a joy to talk with Star Wars alums Diego Luna (“Cassian Andor” and Executive Producer), Genevieve O’Reilly (“Mon Mothma”), and Tony Gilroy (Executive Producer / Writer / Showrunner), the true surprise and delight turned out to be Star Wars newbies Kyle Soller (“Syril Karn”) and Denise Gough (“Dedra Meero”). The two were paired for their roundtable and hinted at a romantic arc for their characters. In their words, “an evil love story.”

 

Others joining in the virtual press conference include Adria Arjona (“Bix Caleen”) and host Joe Neumaier, film critic for the New York Daily News.

 

Star Wars: ANDOR Synopsis:

 

ANDOR follows Cassian Andor played by Diego Luna, who reprises his role from ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY. As you may have guessed this is not a sequel to ROGUE ONE but a prequel that follows Cassian’s journey from young man to Rebel, 5 years before the events of the film. It also gives us a perspective on the burgeoning rebellion against the Empire.

At heart, this new Marvel Disney+ series is a 30-minute comedy, following the beats of an enjoyable half-hour comedy series.

 

Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany) is a single 30-something woman with a career as an attorney. Not only must she navigate dating and her job, but she also recently became imbued with hulk-powers, and can transform into a green 6 ft 7 in hulk. Consequently she becomes head of the Specialty division of a legal firm, focusing on superhuman-oriented legal cases.

 

The series is 9 episodes, and includes appearances by familiar faces. Mark Ruffalo returns as Bruce Banner/Hulk. Tim Roth as Emil Blonsky/Abomination, and Benedict Wong as Wong.

Synopsis:

 

Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia are on a mission to transport medical supplies for the Rebellion when an Imperial Star Destroyer attacks their ship. When they make the jump to hyperspace, their transport begins to shake violently and Luke drops back to sublight travel to find themselves beyond the galaxy's edge and in a starless void. 

 

The only visible 'star' turns out to be a mysterious organic ship, which swallows up their small transport. There, they find the ship's sole occupant who shares his unbelievable history…

We continue our look back at Disney classics with 2008’s animated film BOLT! David Dollar and Jenn Novotny of The Main Street Electrical Podcast join us to share their stories and thoughts on this 48th Disney animated feature. Starring John Travolta, Miley Cyrus and Susie Essman, BOLT! was directed by Chris Williams (Big Hero 6) and Byron Howard (Tangled/Zootopia). BOLT! marks the end of the studio’s early 2000’s growing pains, and we explore all the ways in which this movie is a stepping stone into Disney’s Renaissance Revival beginning with 2009’s Princess and the Frog.

 

BOLT Synopsis

 

Having spent his life on a film set, Bolt believes he has super powers. When he thinks that his “person”, 12-year-old Penny, is kidnapped, Bolt runs away to try and save her, but ends up getting shipped cross-country to NYC. 

 

Out in the real world, Bolt accumulates a team consisting of a sarcastic alley cat named Mittens, and “Bolt super-fan” hamster named Rhino. They embark on a journey back to L.A. to find Penny, as Bolt gradually learns that he does not have powers and must learn that he belongs in the ordinary world, as an ordinary dog.

Samantha Alleyne, the first female Stormtrooper, shares so many stories about her career as actress and model. Since THE FORCE AWAKENS, she has played about 15 different parts in each Star Wars film, with crazy on-set stories for each one. What subtle pieces were changed in the Stormtrooper armor to accommodate her feminine shape? What was her most embarrassing moment on set? You’ll learn how she and her hand worked directly with Tony Gilroy to create a pivotal on-screen moment in ROGUE ONE. Samantha is also proud to be an inspiration for the next generation, especially women of color.

Never Land on Alderaan!

 

It’s a special Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness bonus episode! Doctor Strange and Wanda Maximoff, now Scarlet Witch, must contend with what they both have done to the Multiverse. In this episode, Richard and Sarah break down the film and share their thoughts on the characters, genre and scenes. Where do our favorite characters go from here?? What do we think of a horror film in the MCU? We also share your thoughts, too. As with any of our breakdowns, this episode DOES contain spoilers. 

 

Full Synopsis:

 

The film opens as America Chavez and an alternate version of Doctor Strange flee through the space between universes to find the Book of Vishanti to stop a demon chasing them. (The Book of the Vishanti contains spells of defensive magic and is indestructible. Its counterpart, the Darkhold, contains all the knowledge of black magic). 

 

Chavez makes it to Earth-616 and is saved by Doctor Strange and Sorcerer Supreme Wong. She tells them that she is being hunted because she has the power to travel through the multiverse. 

 

They soon realize it was Wanda who is hunting Chavez down to gain her power so she can cross the multiverse and find her kids, Billy and Tommy. When Strange refuses to surrender Chavez, Wanda attacks Kamar-Taj, killing many acolytes. Chavez then accidentally transports herself and Strange across the multiverse to Earth-838.

 

While searching for help, Strange and Chavez are arrested by Earth-838's Karl Mordo and brought before the Illuminati, which consists of Mordo himself, Captain Peggy Carter (from the animated series, What If?), King Black Bolt (who is part of the Inhumans), Captain Maria Rambeau (from Captain Marvel), Doctor Reed Richards (from the FF), and Professor Charles Xavier (from the X-Men). 

 

Mordo believes our Earth's Strange is dangerous, but before they can pass judgment, Wanda arrives and kills the Illuminati, except Mordo. Strange and Chavez escape with help from Strange's ex-fiancé Christine Palmer, who is an Illuminati scientist in this multiverse.

 

Escaping from Wanda, the three enter the space between universes to find the Book of Vishanti, but Wanda appears and takes over Chavez's mind, using her powers to send the others to a sinister, mostly-destroyed universe. Strange and Palmer fight the sinister universe's Strange, who has been corrupted by the Darkhold. Strange uses this Darkhold to dream-walk into the corpse of the alternate Strange which remained on Earth-616 and save Chavez. Unable to overpower Wanda, Chavez instead transports her back to Earth-838, allowing Billy and Tommy to witness her evil. The kids are terrified by Wanda, who is there as the Scarlet Witch, but after realizing how much death and destruction she's caused, Wanda uses her powers to destroy all copies of the Darkhold throughout the multiverse, seemingly sacrificing herself in the process. 

 

Before Christine returns to Earth-838, Strange tells her that he still loves his universe's Christine but has always been too scared to have a real relationship. America begins training as a sorcerer at Kamar-Taj.

Happy May the 4th Skywalkers! Star Wars month has officially kicked off and special guest Dominic Pace is here to help us celebrate! When The Mandalorian premiered on Disney+ we were all excited to see this new bounty hunter in the Star Wars universe. The series then gave us many of these fearsome hunters including the Shaara-din known as Gekko! Dominic Pace appeared as Gekko, who is not only seen in The Mandalorian but also on a tiki mug, and he has since grown into the next great ambassador in Star Wars fandom. He lives by Ashley Eckstein’s motto: Dream it, Do it.

Synopsis:

 

Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader enter the dangerous Crystal Valley, the location of their epic lightsaber battle. Arranged by Domina Tagge, she plans to not only have Luke killed, but Vader as well since he was a long- time rival of her brother Baron Orman Tagge. 

 

Held at blaster point, the Baron forces Han to bring him to Monastery to save his sister from corruption. When the Falcon comes to a bumpy stop, Han and Leia subdue the Orman, but he escapes when incoming TIE fighters begin firing on the Falcon. Orman enters the Crystal Valley and confronts Vader. The dark lord reveals to Orman that his sister is not as innocent as he believes. Vader decides not to kill him since he has one final task to fulfill.

Never Land on Alderaan!

 

Moon Knight, the 6th Disney+ Marvel series, has arrived! We prepare you for the entire series with a Comic Book primer, and share our thoughts on the first episode, “The Goldfish Problem.” There are so many layers to this character who first appeared in 1975 in the series Werewolf by Night. Plus having so many personalities, Moon Knight is very hard to boil down. But we did it. We gathered a lot of information and tried to focus on the highlights so it wouldn't be overwhelming. Now let's take the night with vengeance and justice and get into Moon Knight!

 

Premise of Marvel’s Disney+ series

 

The series follows Steven Grant (Oscar Isaac), a gift shop employee at a London museum that is currently showing an Egyptian exhibit. Steven Grant suffers from dissociative identity disorder, and is trying to figure out what is real and what is not, and he is guided along the way from another one of his identities named Marc Spector who is the avatar of the Egyptian moon god Khonshu. Along the way Steven Grant must contend with Marc’s enemies like Dr. Arthur Harrow (Ethan Hawke), as they are thrust into a deadly mystery surrounding the powerful gods of Egypt.

 

Who is Moon Knight as found in the comics from the 80’s?

 

The comics focus on Marc Spector, and Steven Grant is not a lovable loser who works in a gift shop. Marc Spector served as a Marine and briefly as a CIA operative, and is left for dead by fellow mercenary named Bushman in Sudan. Spector is brought before a statue of Khonshu and before he dies, he is suddenly revived and fully healed. He claims Khonshu wants him to be the "moon's knight", redeeming his life of violence by now protecting and avenging the innocent. 

 

On his return to the United States, MARC Spector invests his mercenary profits into becoming the crimefighter "Moon Knight".  Along with his costumed alter ego, he primarily uses three other identities to gain information from different social circles: billionaire businessman Steven Grant, taxicab driver Jake Lockley, and suited consultant Mr. Knight. Sound like a familiar caped crusader? The similarities to Batman are undeniable!

Classic Marvel Star Wars Comics Issue 35 "DARK LORD'S GAMBIT" (February 1980) features Darth Vader at his manipulative finest. As the title suggests, Vader succeeds in manipulating the Tagge family and Luke Skywalker into vulnerable positions he can then exploit at his leisure. This issue also features Leia in a miniskirt, and it's quite shocking!

Synopsis:

 

Darth Vader finally learns the name of the boy who destroyed the Death Star, and sets a plan in motion to get his revenge. He enlists the aid of General Ulric Tagge as well as his younger sister Sister Domina Tagge to help him in the endeavor. Domina is a member of the Order of the Sacred Circle who have thus far remained neutral in the Galactic Civil War, but that will soon change and each side in the conflict, The Empire and Rebellion, will send a representative to the planet Monastery to present his case.

 

Vader is to represent the Galactic Empire, and Domina requests Luke Skywalker to  represent the Alliance. While Luke thinks he may be in over his head on this diplomatic mission, Domina reassures him, even though her true intentions are revenge for Luke's involvement in the apparent death of Orman Tagge.
