As part of a week-long focus on food labelling, we ask how to include the carbon footprint of food on a label. There is no accepted standardised system for this, despite pressure from consumers. We hear from one company that is trying to come up with a solution.
More than a third of farmers who answered a DEFRA survey say they’re too unsure about the future of farm payments to make any specific business plans for the next few years. The latest Farm Business Survey asked farmers in England about their plans as we transition away from the old EU subsidy payments to a new system of public money for public goods. But 29% of the businesses that responded said they were looking to make changes - we visit one farm where plans are afoot.
And from this week, the new Office for Environmental Protection starts its work as an independent enforcer of environmental laws across England. Its role is to advise the government on environmental law, and hold it and other public bodies to account. It can undertake its own investigations and potentially take action in the courts.
