Molly is joined by Leanne, a member of the “Breaking Up with Sugar” Facebook community to engage in a coaching session and take a deeper dive into her relationship with food. Usually, this journey goes one of two ways: we heal our relationship with food, and then other parts of our lives that need healing are revealed, or we work on other aspects of our personal development first, and then we shift our attention to food. For Leanne, she shares that the last few years have been challenging, and as she continues to do the inner work on herself, she struggles with her relationship with food. Leanne wants to focus on her health so that ultimately, she can get back to doing things that she truly loves in life.

Although she knows what is in her best interest foodwise, the cycling of binging and restricting continues. Molly explains that this is because our brain wants us safe, and not happy, and there is safety in doing what is familiar. For someone that has experienced disordered eating or had a lifetime of binging and restricting, that is what our brain knows and it is predictable. Molly and Leanne take a deep dive into the underlying and subconscious reasons for Leanne’s relationship with food and why she feels shame and the need to hide her habits.

Although it might be obvious to us that binges have negative repercussions and ultimately steal joy, we have to acknowledge that they have served us in some way throughout our lives. That is why we get stuck in the cycle of clinging to these repetitive patterns and thoughts that don’t serve us, but it’s time to get some new thoughts. Some of our thoughts can be so toxic and we don’t even challenge them. They can be completely untrue, yet we cling to them and allow them to be in charge. We get into a victim stance that feels safe and forget that we have choices, but the truth is that we can make a conscious choice to do what is best for us, and it starts with awareness.
