Omari is Tara's partner and an artist who currently has a solo exhibit showing at Elephant Gallery In Nashville titled, Fifteen. (Showing through May 20, 2023)
Fifteen marks a very important part of Omari's story, the end of his parole following a 15 year prison sentence. In this episode, we talk candidly about Omari and Tara's emotional, mental, and spiritual experience during this time.
Within the last 15 years, Omari found both relationships and art to be two of the most valuable resources and healing agents in his story. Our conversation walks us through how he accessed hope in unimaginable circumstances and how he specifically used art to find freedom and liberation from prisons constructed both personally and socially.

Dr. John Gottman discovered four negative behaviors, or “The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse,” that spell disaster for any relationship, and with them learned how to predict the failure or success of a relationship with a 90% accuracy rate. This week is the beginning of a 4 part series where we dive into each of the horsemen: Criticism, Contempt, Defensiveness, & Stonewalling. We are starting our series with Criticism, which is usually the horseman that shows up first when there is an issue in a relationship and sets the tone for how the conversation plays out. It can have the power to turn a bid for connection into an argument, which pushes us further from each other. The good news is that Dr. Gottman not only provided us with language for the problems, he offered us solutions or “antidotes” for each horseman. Listen this week to hear how to move from Criticizing your partner and creating more chaos to expressing healthy complaints and creating space to lean into our relationships.

This week is National Eating Disorder Awareness Week, a week to spread awareness, hope and resources for and about eating disorders. Most people who learn that eating disorders are the second deadliest mental health disorder are surprised, so the reason there has been so much uproar in the last couple of years about diet culture and the harm it causes goes wildly misunderstood. In honor of NEDA week, Kat explores and describes the polarizing experience happening now between diet culture and the more recent anti diet culture movement. And because this week is about hope- she talks about a position on this spectrum that might be more helpful than the options it feels like people have today.

This week, Tara Booker is back for another installment of “The Difference Between,” a series where we break down the difference between a mental health related topic and how it shows up in pop culture. This week we rolled it back to the basics and talked about what therapy really is versuses how some popular tv shows portray it. Spoiler: It isn’t just us nodding our heads and asking you how you feel and it also isn’t us telling you what to do!
Then we breakdown why sometimes “No” is a complete sentence and why sometimes its helpful to offer more information when setting a boundary. It all goes back to the grey nuanced reality of what relationships really are- and there isn’t a right way that works all of the time!

This week we have a more specific follow up to last week's question about therapists finding closure when clients terminate the therapeutic relationship.
The three more detailed questions explored in this episode are:
1. How do you find a sense of closure when there is no final conversation to process ending a therapist-client relationship?
2. What is the best way to respond to an email when a client wishes to discontinue therapy for the time being?
3. Is there a way for early therapists to communicate that therapy is not only used to process negative thoughts and events, but also maintenance and process positive thoughts and events?

This week y'all are in for A TREAT with our guest, Courtney Grimes, LCSW.
Courtney’s passion for helping others is something you will feel in the first 3 seconds of this episode. You will also probably laugh in the first few seconds because she is as hilarious as she is passionate and smart.
This particular conversation was inspired by a comment that Courtney made on a work trip that she and Kat went on together when they were talking about the gaps and holes in the treatment and recovery process. Courtney said, "No one else cares about your recovery." This may at first sound off putting and harsh. But when you dig into it, this sentence offers up a huge serving of empowerment to take ownership and control of one's own life.
What makes it so hard for people to maintain recovery at home when in treatment? Why do triggers pop up everywhere? What are we supposed to do with said triggers? How am I supposed to heal and be healthy if the world is so F*ed up???
You will find about 1 million reasons to take notes during this episode, so grab a pen and paper (or your notes app on your phone). One of Kat's favorite Courtney takeaways was, "Everything boils down to two things things: love and fear. Fear is made up of what if, versus what is. And what if isn’t real." So good, right??
Courtney co-founded a group therapy practice in Nashville called Symmetry Counseling. She serves as the Clinical Director for non-profit Renewed, and more recently founded The Collective. The Collective is an Extended Outpatient program, designed to bridge the gap between IOP and OP services, while providing a welcoming community for clients.

Katie is back to talk to us about the enneagram AND how it can have a positive influence on identifying the self care practices that are right for each of us individually. Self care doesn’t just have to be getting a massage or going for a walk. Katie teaches us in this episode that self care is less about escaping and indulging and more about restoring us back to who we truly are.

This week Kat is talking all things AFFIRMATIONS with Tiania Haneline.
In March 2020, Tiania Haneline wanted her 3-year-old daughter Scarlett to build her self-confidence and embrace the beauty of her skin, her curls, her kindness and every trait in between. In the wake of George Floyd’s murder, and rise of the Black Lives Matter movement, she started using daily affirmations with her daughter. Scarlett would repeat positive affirmations back to herself in the mirror while Tiania did her hair. I am beautiful. I am strong. I am brave. I am kind. I am doing my best. Tiania started posting the videos on TikTok and wasn’t prepared for the response. Nine months later the mother-daughter duo from Myrtle Beach had more than a million social media followers and have now topped 8 million. Through the unexpected social media success, Tiania (who had been laid off from her job in 2021) went from being a single mom living from paycheck to paycheck, to being able to fully support her family.
In their new children’s book, I’m Going to Have a Good Day!, the main character Scarlett practices daily affirmations as she goes about her day, inspiring readers to incorporate similar affirmations into their own lives.
In this episode you will hear Kat and Tiania talk about building self worth and how a foundation of knowing you are GOOD lays a foundation for making it through tough times with other's opinions of us don't align with what we know to be true.

This week Kat is bringing back one of her favorite things to talk about… training people how to treat you! Have you ever asked yourself why all the people around you suck? Or maybe, why do people take advantage of you over and over again? Well… it might have to do more with how you model to others how you want to be treated and less about the other person. In this episode you’ll hear more about why this is important and how to start modeling the behavior you want to experience from others.

Kat talks about how she processed her "dramatic" moment and brings Patrick on to give his take on what he saw going on as it was happening. This week, Kat is bringing you one of the most fun people to talk to....ever. (Well at least she thinks so!) Toni Collier, the founder of an international women’s ministry called Broken Crayons Still Color, which helps women process through brokenness and get to hope. She is also the host of the podcast, Still Coloring and author of her new book, Brave Enough to Be Broken.
In this week's episode, Toni talks with Kat about some of the trauma she has experienced (including toxic relationships & a toxic church environment) and how she found the courage and strength to build a life of joy and freedom through it all. And surprise... Therapy was a huge part of this process. Toni speaks about how she was able to include both therapy and God in her healing and process and why both of them were pivotal in her own story of redemption. OHHH we LOVED this conversation and we hope you do to!

This week, Kat is joined by fellow podcaster and producer, Lauren Ober. Lauren describes herself as someone who had a hard time fitting into the mold that most people her age naturally did. During the pandemic, as the distractions that previously allowed her to ignore the challenges she faced faded away, she decided to seek a clear understanding of why she felt different than her peers. In her early 40s, Lauren was diagnosed with autism. She soon found herself working on a new project, The Loudest Girl in the World, a podcast detailing what life is like for her as a newly diagnosed autistic person. In this episode, Lauren talks about common myths the world tends to believe about autism in general and ways in which she has personally been misunderstood by others. One of Kat’s favorite take always from this episode is the reminder that, if you know one person with autism then you know one person with autism. As you listen you might learn a little about autism but you definitively will learn a lot about Lauren Ober.

This week, Kat is joined by Liz Plank (@femistabulous) to shake things up a bit. This episode went in a totally different direction than Kat had hoped-- in the BEST way!
Liz is a filmmaker, award-winning journalist, international bestselling author, producer, podcast host and more. She’s the CEO of Liz Plank Productions and is a columnist for MSNBC and has been listed as one of Forbes’ 30 Under 30, Mediaite’s Most Influential in News Media, and Marie Claire’s Most Powerful Women, and was named one of the World’s Most Influential People in Gender Policy by Apolitical. She is a force and someone Kat has been dying to have on the show. In this episode you will hear a genuine conversation with two people who are processing the possibility that we've been flooded with too much content.
Why does everything seem hard, bad, scary, and exhausting these days? Have we taken "it's ok to not be ok" too far? Are our boundaries becoming too rigid and are we losing the ability to find grace within our human relationships? These are all things Kat and Liz discuss and things that could be the missing piece to the puzzle that you keep looking for in the next self-help influencer, wellness coach, or tiktok therapist.

This week, Kat dives into the lies that we tell ourselves. It’s something that we all do for one reason or another… we lie to stay comfortable, we lie to avoid, we lie because it can feel good, and we can lie to continue a narrative that we want ourselves and others to believe. The tricky part is, sometimes we lie so well that we can convince ourselves that we aren’t even lying anymore. So, in this episode, Kat dives into some of the most common lies we tell ourselves, why we might use them, and how they might be hurting us.

She believes that life is meant to be lived in connection and helps friends have more meaningful conversations and create more sustainable friendships. Blake is releasing The Friendship Deck, a game for friends to play to help them navigate modern friendships as an adult on August 19th and can be purchased at www.thefriendshipdeck.com. Is your boss a narcissist or are they just a jerk? If you’re asking yourself this question than this week’s episode is calling your name. Honestly, these days the word narcissist is thrown around so much that it is almost losing it’s true me meaning. The good news: Kat is on a mission to help us understand what is just mean and harmful behavior and what it actually looks like to be in a relationship (specifically at work) with someone who might fit the criteria for malignant narcissism.
disclaimer: This podcast is not a replacement for mental health services and does not have the ability to diagnose or treat any person for mental health needs. This episode specifically does not and can not serve as means to help listeners diagnose or treat others or themselves with narcissistic personality disorder or any mental illness.

This week Kat (@kat.defatta) has Justin Baldoni (@justinbaldoni) on the show to talk about some of the harmful messages that our culture's idea of masculinity creates. Justin recently came out with a book titled, Man Enough and has started the Man Enough Podcast in an effort to further undefine masculinity and offer freedom to those who have been hurt by the current popular beliefs of what being a man looks like. In this episode you will hear about some of those beliefs and gain a better understanding of why we need to start shifting how we view masculinity.

This week Kat reads an email from a listener about her struggle in deciding if she should reconnect with her estranged father after discovering he has been diagnosed with cancer for the second time. She shares an excerpt from Lori Gotlieb’s book, Maybe You Should Talk To Someone, where Lori discusses the ability to separate forgiveness from compassion. In times like these, we often look to find the “right” answers. We focus on what we feel like we should do rather than what we believe is right for us. And Kat leaves us with some questions and thoughts to help move listeners into a space where we can discern those things better!

Today’s guest is Erin S. Lane. Erin is a writer, theologian, and someone other than a mother; which is also the title of her new book. Erin holds a bachelor’s degree from Davidson College and a master’s degree from Duke Divinity School, both with a focus on gender studies. And she is freaking amazing.
In this episode we are decoupling a woman’s purpose from her reproductive role. Any woman who even hints she is maybe questioning if she wants to have kids has heard some form of these cultural scripts we discuss in this epsiode. In Someone Other Than a Mother: Flipping the Scripts on a Woman’s Purpose and Making Meaning Beyond Motherhood, Erin S. Lane asks if it is it possible to do something more meaningful than mothering? We always hope that You Need Therapy Podcast continues to provide an opportunity for listeners to discover more than just one way to live a desirable and good life - and this conversation does just that.

This week Kat is breaking down the 4 reasons she believes diets are not helpful and also just flat out dangerous. There is so much conflicting information in the world about what is healthy, what is unhealthy, and what you should do in order to live the most optimal life you can. So much information, that it is hard to know who to believe. Because of this, Kat is giving you front row tickets to the perspective of an eating disorder therapist. And the truth is, there are many ways that you can choose to "love your optimal life" but we don't think going on a diet will be one of them.

Orthorexia in its simplest terms means an obsession with healthy eating, and for people who are not immersed in this field, that may not sound like a bad thing because eating healthy isn’t bad. So, this week, Kat is diving into the topic to bring light to what becoming obsessed with the health and quality of the food we consume can do to our mental health. Someone who develops orthorexia most likely doesn’t start out being obsessed but things can take a turn pretty fast not just due to reasons associated with the individual. This issue is very much connected to our culture and the messaging companies and brands use to attract and illicit business and the manipulation involved in how diet culture sells their ideals and products. So, sit tight and get ready to hear how some of the most popular diets and diet buzz words have created a rise in some of the most stealth disordered eating patterns we are currently seeing today.

This week Kat has a VERY special guest on the show to help dip our toes into the world of open conversations about sex. Nicoletta Heideggar, LMFT is here to teach us why talking about it matters, what we gain when we feel permission to learn about our bodies and our sexuality, and how not talking about these things produces unnecessary shame. Nicoletta is a licensed therapist who specializes in sex therapy (what is that? Well we answer that question don't worry!), has a masters in human sexuality, and is pursuing her Ph.D in human sexuality as well! She's about as expert as they come when it comes to this topic… and after this conversation we couldn't be more excited to get her back here for round two!
