Beatrice Sparks (1917-2012) was an American writer known for “Go Ask Alice,” “Jay’s Journal,” and “It Happened to Nancy.” The books were positioned as cautionary tales of “real” teens, but were almost entirely fictional. Her books stoked fears about drug use and the “Satanic Panic” of the 1980s.

Carmilla (1872) is a vampire novella written by Irish author Sheridan Le Fanu. It tells the story of a lesbian romance between Carmilla, a 150 year old vampire, and Laura, a 19-year-old girl living with her widowed father in a castle in Austria. Through the concept of vampirism, Sheridan uses the character of Carmilla to explore queer relationships and female sexual expression in a time of strict patriarchy.

Yuki-onna is an ancient Japanese yokai, a category of ghosts, spirits, and monsters derived from folklore. The first account of the mysterious woman was written centuries ago, during Japan’s Muromachi period. The legend is popular in the north of Japan and in other places with harsh winters and heavy snowfalls, and it likely appeared in response to missing locals during storms.

Enriqueta Martí (c. 1868-1913) was a Spanish woman infamously known as the "Vampire of Barcelona" due to her alleged involvement in child abduction, exploitation, and murder in the early 20th century. “La Pascualita,” a mannequin in a bridal shop in Chihuahua, Mexico, has attracted hundreds of visitors and inspired numerous stories, songs, and Internet musings since she was first installed in 1930. According to the legend, she is actually the embalmed corpse of the original shop owner’s daughter, who died of a spider bite shortly before her wedding night.

This back to school season, we're bringing back some of our favorite Womanica episodes you might have missed. Today's Womanican is Begum Rokeya (c. 1880-1932). She spent her life fighting for women’s rights in India and Bangladesh. She opened the first school for Muslim girls in her region and advocated for women’s education. She dreamed of a world where women could reach their full potential — a world she brought to life in her revolutionary feminist utopian short story “Sultana’s Dream.”

She was a pioneer of autofiction and one of the most widely-read French writers in the postwar era. She specialized in blurring the lines between autobiography and imagination, mining her myriad of hardships for narrative gold. Her novel “The Lover” reflected her experiences growing up in French Indochina and became an international bestseller.

Zelia Nuttall (1857-1933) was a Mexican-American archaeologist. Fabulous Moolah (1923-2007) was a pioneering American pro wrestler, promoter and trainer. She held different versions of the women’s championship title almost continuously from the mid-1950s to the mid-1980s. She was also the first woman to be inducted into the WWF Hall of Fame.

Lillian Hellman (1905-1984), a playwright and novelist who sued writer and critic Mary McCarthy (1912-1989) after Mary McCarthy called her "a dishonest writer" on the "Dick Cavett Show." Tituba (c. 1692) was an enslaved woman who played a significant role in the Salem witch trials of 1692. As one of the first to be accused of witchcraft, she confessed under duress and implicated others, fueling the mass hysteria. Her confession included vivid descriptions of supernatural experiences, which greatly influenced the course of the trials. Despite her pivotal role, much of her life before and after the trials remains shrouded in mystery.

Naila Ayesh (1960-present) is a grassroots organizer who demonstrated for Palestinian liberation during the First Intifada in the late 1980s. Anita DeFrantz (1954-present) captained the U.S. women’s rowing team and was part of the team that won a bronze medal at the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games – the first games where women’s rowing was introduced. After her athletic career, she went on to become the first African American — and first American woman — to represent the U.S. on the International Olympic Committee.

Debi Thomas (1967-present) is an American figure skater who became the first Black athlete to win a medal in any sport at the Winter Olympics in 1988. She wasn’t content with just being a world class skater, she also became a doctor, earning degrees from Stanford University and Northwestern University. Maria-Teresa de Filippis (1926-2016) was an Italian race car driver. She was an official driver for Maserati and the first woman in Formula One. During her career, she qualified for five Grand Prix races, including three championships. Since her time on the track, only five women have attempted to qualify for world championship grand prix races.

Hélène de Pourtalès (1868-1945) was an American-born Swiss sailor who competed in the 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris representing Switzerland. She was one of the first 22 women to participate in the Olympics, and one of the first to win an Olympic gold medal.

Mary Peters (1939-present) is a former athlete from Northern Ireland who won a gold medal for the pentathlon at the 1972 Olympics in Munich. This marked the bloodiest year of The Troubles. Peters went on to champion other athletes from Northern Ireland.

Kathleen Stanford Grant (1921-2010) was a professional dancer turned Pilates pioneer. After a serious knee injury, she trained with founder Joseph Pilates to recover and discovered a lifelong love of the exercise program. Kathy became one of only two people he ever certified directly to teach Pilates and helped bolster its popularity in the late 20th century.
