Let’s be real. This year, everything since March has been soooooooo shit.
People suffered tragic losses, millions lost their jobs, and heroic key workers have kept everything going, often without proper PPE. Meanwhile, many of our grandparents and immuno-compromised people are still indoors.
But quarantining has offered, mostly the luckiest among us, an opportunity to reflect on our lives and, potentially, to reset them. Is there anything that happened to us over the last few months that has changed our lives for the better?
For our last episode of Covid-19 Fact Checkers, guest host Moeed Majeed talks to Activist and Educator Nim Ralph, Social Entrepreneur Emily Mathieson, and Brent-based Young Creator Sophie AJ to discuss whether we should be returning to the ‘old normal’, or not.

So, did this really all begin with a bat?
It’s pretty impressive how quickly we’ve all adapted to living in a global pandemic, but it’s time for a reality check - how the fuck did we get here in the first place?
Rachel Nuwer, journalist and author of Poached: Inside the Dark World of Animal Trafficking takes host Suprina and Brent resident Kamiah back to the beginning of all this - to Wuhan in China and back to the seafood and meat market where it’s believed COVID-19 originated.
She describes how these kinds of markets are the perfect laboratory for potentially lethal viruses to jump from animals to humans and how, if we don’t change our ways when it comes to the illegal and legal wildlife trade, it’s only a matter of time before the next global pandemic…

It’s GCSE results day... except this year - no-one sat the exams. After grade A, A-Level confusion with students finding themselves down-graded by an algorithm and losing university places, the Government made a U-turn and dropped the system ahead of today’s GCSE results. This came as a big relief to 16 year old Kritika who collects her grades today. But, with results now based significantly on teacher assessments and predicted grades, she’s worried it still might affect black and ethnic minority students the hardest.
Kuba Shand-Baptiste, Commissioning Editor and columnist for Independent Voices, the opinion section of The Independent, joins Kritika and VENT host Amelia to talk this one out.

Everything is too much right now, especially for black people. We need a minute just to process what’s going on. This is the second part of our conversation, in which all four of us came together to share how we’re feeling in the wake of the death of George Floyd as a result of the actions of the Minneapolis police. We’ve all done some thinking about what’s come up for us over the last week or so, and we’ve chosen some things we wanted to process together. In light of the death of George Floyd as a result of the actions of the Minneapolis police, and the Black Lives Matter protests taking place across the world, it doesn't feel right for us to stick to our normal VENT Weekly schedule this week. Structural and institutional racism is not new, and is just as prevalent and toxic in the UK as in the USA.
We’ve decided to share a documentary with you that was made by Amelia, one of our VENT Weekly hosts. It’s about what it’s like to have to navigate university and the world of work as a black woman. If you’re listening to this and you’re black, we see you and we are sending solidarity. If you’re listening to this and you want to be an ally, listen up, and reflect on what you can do.
