Submit ReviewYou’ve probably heard of the term “the butterfly effect.” It comes from chaos theory, the idea that something as small and seemingly insignificant as a butterfly flapping its wings could influence the path of a tornado that forms weeks later. Today, an appeal in Arkansas could have led to a retrial for a man who had been given a death sentence in Idaho a year earlier – after over 20 years of robberies, rapes, and murders.
Note: This episode discusses sensitive topics such as sexual assault, murder, sexual abuse, and the killing of minors. Please seek appropriate support if you are affected by these issues.
SPONSORS: Americans spend 90% of their time indoors, but indoor air could be 2-5 times more polluted than outdoor air, causing health risks. Introducing AirDoctor, an air purifier that CNN, Money, ABC, and more have featured. With its UltraHEPA filter, AirDoctor removes 99.99% of bacteria and viruses, including particles as small as 0.003 microns. Step into the complex and contentious world of the death penalty in the United States – a topic that has haunted the country’s history for centuries. From the early days of the colonies to the present, the practice of sentencing criminals to death has been a hotly debated issue, one that has polarized even the most seasoned legal professionals and human rights advocates.

Wichita, Kansas, was a glorious snowy sight on the night of December 14th, 2000. The snow muffled all sound, and Christmas decorations twinkled warmly through the gloom… something that gave a faint glimmer of hope to a 25-year-old woman. The decorations shone as a light to guide her as she stumbled for nearly a mile across snowy grounds and over a barbed wire fence, freezing and severely injured, to seek help from anywhere and anyone who would offer it.
Content Warnings: sexual assault, domestic abuse, child abuse, mentions of substance abuse and attempted suicide

It’s an almost laughable headline – “woman googles how to murder her husband.” Though the truth may be stranger than fiction, clickbait is precisely that – bait to get you to look at the story, a hook to spread it as far as possible so that news sites get as much traffic and, therefore, ad revenue as they can. But behind these humorous clickbait headlines are always stories of lives cut short and tragedies befalling people who just wanted to love and care for their spouses, only for them to turn around and commit the most permanent of all betrayals against them.
Content Warnings: This episode discusses mental health issues, manipulation, mentions of suicide

Forensic science is always expanding and because of its complicated nature, scientists cannot get it right every time – no matter how hard they try, or how diligently they work. However, that isn’t to say there are no cases of intentional gross negligence and misconduct. Today, we look at a case that threatens the integrity of a prominent forensic scientist, and the ground-breaking case that helped cement that same scientist’s career.
Content Warnings: this episode contains a discussion of murder, assault on a pregnant woman, discrediting of an individual with mental illnesses, and investigative negligence/corruption.
