Submit ReviewCollin from Home Ice Advantage joins us for a look at Round 1 so far!
We start with the Canes / Isles series, then go around the league.
We talk PP, goalies, and predictions!
Ray and I go through the final weeks of the season, who's hot, and then jump into analysis and expectations of each playoff series for round 1.
Today we talked about.. well, honestly Ray talked about hockey with Kaily and Alex, and I'm going to listen in to find out what they talked about! Then I can update the description. :)
Just Ray and I again today; life happens! Family first!
We talk about the general trend of the Canes the last few seasons as they approach the end of the season, comparisons to previous years, do the Canes need a goal scorer or is scoring-by-committee working? Also Canes have never had a 50g scorer, only 2x 100 pt seasons, is the offense now the secondary scoring, and looking at potential playoff matchups and the soft(?) schedule to finish April.
Just Ray and I this week; our guest Jack Hudec will be on another day (looking forward to that to talk some Wolves)
We preview Bruins / Canes will be over by the time this is out (so is it still a preview?)
Brad does his Steve Dangle impersonation talking about Matthews post-whistle goal from 3/25.
Recapping Leafs and both Rangers games.
Good stuff.
Just Ray and I this week; short and to the point.
We talk about the huge win in Philly, TA gets undressed by Aho.
Looking at the past week and the week ahead
Svechnikov injuries and what that means for fans' expectations
Rod Blend'amour shuffle the lines and why not? Burns is now the Canes top scoring defenseman, move him back to offense?
Predictions for this week, and more.
This week we have on CandleCanyon AKA Emma, an amazing and talented artist who has worked with the Carolina Hurricanes, and whose art is often seen on hockey twitter.
Ray and I started the episode looking at the VGK game, the standings and wildcards, the weeks ahead, and just general Canes talk.
Emma joined us doing the Storm Cellar Forecast and we got her opinions on the Tropical Storm and Hurricane segments, then dove into her artwork and her Caniac story.
You can find Emma on Twitter and Instagram at CandleCanyon, both which link to her Etsy store!
This week we talk with Sam Overton, managing editor and Canes beat writer for NCSU's newspaper the Technician.
We talk about being named after Sami Kapanen, coming from a Caniac household, covering the Canes (and Stadium Series) for the Technician, being a young woman in journalism as it pertains to the Canes, and more.
We also talk about the trade deadline, the additions of Shayne Gostisbehere and Jesse Puljujarvi, and the effects on the team.
Ghostbear's first game in red.
Sunday's matchup against Tampa Bay and the "easy" week before the gauntlet of the following 10 days.
This week we have Jacob Billington from TheHockeyWriters an HockeyBuzz
We talk about the Cam Ward HOF Game, Stadium Series Game, and the last few weeks. We also look ahead at March and the trade deadline.
Special Shout-Outs to the folks we got to see in NC!
This week the Storm Cellar opens up The Sports Bar - our guest Mike Solarte was the Triangle's premier hockey guy when the Hurricanes came to NC. An Associated Press award winning journalist for his Raleigh IceCaps coverage; Mike was THE go-to person for hockey.
We talked about Mike's journey in Raleigh and Charlotte as part of "850 the Buzz" and "Spectrum News 1"
We get some anecdotes about the Raleigh IceCaps including my personal favorite Lyle Wildgoose, the early days of Canes hockey, the tough position of playing/reporting in Greensboro, a terrific story about Arturs Irbe, and more.
Then we talk a little Stadium Series and how both Mike, as well as Ray and I, are expecting to see some Finns and Scots this week.
If you only ever listen to 1 episode of The Storm Cellar, it should be this one.

Defensive scoring should open up offense
Burns scores because Bluejackets don't move after faceoff
Andersen is back and looks good, are Raanta and Kochetkov less than 100%?
Remember Kochetkov is a kid, maybe too much pressure too early
Patches minor injury - We know he's a glass cannon
I asked Walt Ruff about RBA's 200th win, but it's Colin's fault
Congrats to RBA for 200th win, 3rd fastest all time, and complete culture change for the Hurricanes
RBA is surplanting Ron Francis as "THE" Hurricanes player

Upcoming schedule
This week Ray and I were joined by Kyle Sullivan, host of "Here in Puckberg" @HPuckberg and co-host of "Locked-On Avalanche" @LOPN_Avalanche
With 2 games against the Avalanche in less than a week, we thought it would be good to bring in some opposing viewpoints and talk some puck.
We briefly (very briefly) talk about the Miller debacle, Canes v Edmonton (2 games, 2 hat-tricks for Svech), then the Colorado game, the parallels of the Canes and Avs, and finish up with a round of WeatherWatch (Tropical Depression/Tropical Storm/Hurricane).
Big win in Philly.
Canes are not playing great, but are atop the Metro - step away from the ledge.
Areas of concern : Faceoffs, PP%, PK% : PP Net% is 10.
Necas is on fire, he is absolutely killing it 5v5.
Pesce + Skjei are a +19 through 8 games, 3rd line Martinook looks great.
Ethan Bear + Pederson to Vancouver -- honestly a great salary dump, and Bear should be a 3/4 guy there as well. All around win.
Goaltending thus far this year?
Ray is joined by Caniacs from Raleigh, Calgary, and South Carolina, shoutout to the Flyers, and Chatfield/Noesen have looked very good this year.

Our guest was unable to join us, but Brad and Ray had a great time talking about the 25th anniversary year!
Weather's turning colder, some Canes take in an NCSU victory, Carter Finley upgrades, and congrats to all the 5K runners! We briefly talk the Prospect Showcase, first pre-season game is in 8 days, eagle eyed viewers see the old single flag logo in a social media piece. Canes unveil 25th anniversary jersey, it's a beaut! Brad admits he likes the single flag logo (it's a symbol, accuracy wasn't the priority!) and we have TWO more jserseys coming this year - Reverse Retro and Stadium Series! Stadium Series ticket sales were completely flubbed by the team and NHL - no communication is BAD communication there people.
Huge shoutout to Shannon, Any, and Carrie Jean for helping us out this week! We can't wait to meet yall in person in February!
And we need guests! If you want to be on the show, let us know!

This was originally recorded live on July 4, 2022; the day Ray and I met in person for the first time after 20 years of friendship. Originally posted to Youtube we thought we'd toss this into the mix during this quiet period before the madness begins. How did our predictions of who stays and who goes hold up? If you had billions of dollars, where would you put an NHL team? What NHL rule would you change? Let us know!
This week Ray and I were joined by friend of the show Samantha Wismer to talk puck. We talk about Samantha's hockey journey, Alex Lyon and the Calder Cup Champion Chicago Wolves, Derek Stepan gets a PTO (Professional Try Out contract) with the Canes, and we all wished Team Finland best of luck in the World Juniors last night.
New Intro and our first guest of our 3rd season; we think you'll enjoy both! Daniel Wagner joins the program to talk his Caniac fandom, Patches injury and how it affects the team, Marty Necas is re-signed (but not on 8/8 for a missed opportunity) and we asked the fans who was the toughest Whaler/Hurricane of all time. It was so nice getting guests back on the show and we're ready to get back into game shape for the upcoming season; as of the upload date for this episode we have only 45 days until the first preseason game!
No guest this week, but Ray and I talked about a potential Necas deal may be done, Calgary/Florida trade, and lots about veteran presence. We discuss the next few years' UFA situation, who is a must-sign, how hard it is to lose fan favorites, and why the Canes need to look at winning now.
This week Brad and Ray talk about the departure of Nino Niederreiter, the re-signing of Ethan Bear and the tangled web of what will happen before opening night as the Hurricanes have $1.8M in cap space and still need to re-sign Marty Necas. Why did Bear sign for $2.2M which was lower than his $2.5M qualifying offer? With Gardiner under contract at $4M+, and Bear now at $2.2M, there is a logjam on defense and both of those guys would be very expensive 5/6 defenders; does one get shipped out, and if so, whom? Where does Necas fit in to the new forward group, or does he get moved for someone else as the Hurricanes also have a glut of potential 4th liners.
We can't believe we are now starting Season 3!! Thanks to everyone who tunes in to listen to us! This week we talk a bit about our first every in person meeting (URL https://youtu.be/PfdFRZpjS4Q), Johnny Hockey To CBus, then it's all about Burns, Patches and the rest. So join us as we start prepping for October!
No Ray this week (that's on me) but the wonderful Linnea (L) joins me and we talk about her hockey story, her favorite players, meeting Brett Pesce's parents, and play a game of "Stay or Go" with the Canes UFAs.
Short and Sweet on this one Caniacs!
Season Finale for the Podcast for the season, but we'll be doing some episodes during the off-season as well with a "round table" format.
This week: Wanted to do an episode immediately after the conclusion, probably better off we didn't.
- Canes v Rangers series and Game 7
-- Trouba's hit on Jarvis, "Too many men" penalty against a guy who can't stand up?
-- Hockey needs to do away with hits that follow through the head.
- What went wrong?
- What needs to happen next?
- Exit Interviews & RFAs/UFAs
- Can they keep Niederreiter & Trocheck? Should they?
- Jake Gardiner is back off LTIR @ $4M to keep, almost $2M to buyout.
- Do you trust TA to a long term contract?
- the Necas quagmire.
- Bring up AHL guys and spend on a true goal scorer
- The Storm Center (formerly Tropical depression/Tropical Storm/Hurricane)
- Thank you listeners! If you want to be on the podcast this off-season, let us know! We'll be doing round tables every 2-3 weeks all summer.
- We will be launching a 2nd podcast in October all about Whalers history in Season 1, Canes history in Season 2.
- Ray and Brad are super excited to meet in person this July 4th, after 20+ years of online friendship.
Kat Hunter - Caniac as long as she can remember
-loves Dmen and goalies (who doesn't?)
- 1st jersey Cam Ward
- TikTok (katergy74)
- started making vids for friends of the show @pours4scores (shameless plug)
- Pesce and Brock McGinn
Flames / Oilers - The goal overshadows the series
- Great series, lots of action even if not the best hockey.
- No one is talking about 4 goals in 1:11, because of the (in our opinion) no-goal call.
Canes / Rangers so far - Can they win on the road? Why or why not?
Kat shares her thoughts but had to run to prep for the big game tonight, Brad and Ray finish up Canes / Rangers
- Staal line reminds Ray of the BBC in terms of being the best line at what they do
- 20 year old Seth Jarvis might be the Canes best player in the playoffs outside of Antti Raanta
BREAKING NEWS - Andersen was in a crease this morning per @Ice_Chip
Ray and Brad discuss Avs / Blues - Heck of a series
- Avs advance to WCF for first time since 2002
Brad postulates, "worse exit for fans- Blues or Pathers?" Do you prefer to go out knowing it's coming, or via a punch in the gut when you thought you still had a chance? Very different takes on this one.
Predictions for game 6
On this episode of the Storm Cellar we have Corwin from Boston! Corwin is an amazing hockey fan and goalie, and is perhaps the nicest Bruins fans evah. We talk about Corwin's love of the game, some Bruins, some 2x Isobel Cup Champion Boston Pride (I love them too) and some Canes as well. Being a goaltender themself, Corwin has some thoughts on goaltender interference, and some great analysis on what went right (or wrong depending on your perspective) in round 1. We played Tropical Depression, Tropical Storm, Nor'Easter, and Hurricanes, before going quickly around the league to look at the remaining series. Of course we talked some Canes vs Rangers and Cor is fully onboard with sending the New Yorkers home for the summer. A great episode with a great hockey person, definitely tune in for this one, and we hope to have Cor back this summer during our round-table episodes.
A special edition episode for the start of Round 2. Ray and I recap round 1, then delve into Round 2 a bit. I apologize now for the audio quality, we were recording while the family was asleep so it's a little less animated than usual. Hopefully Apple has fixed the issues with the podcast updating properly; fingers crossed. Thanks for tuning in!

Calgary Caniac Eljay: Whalers fan since 89 when he got a Whalers jersey. Moved to rural Alberta and was able to watch the Whale on TV, not to mention 2nd cousin and Whaler great Geoff Sanderson. Favorite Player Ronnie Franchise, modern day Andrei Svechnikob.
Are the Canes in a slump? Is there too much line mixing?
6 of 8 against playoff teams in March/April (4 OT/SO) games, PP needs to be less predictable down low; need to adapt to teams playing better defensively.

Predictions for Canes / Ducks
Ray and Brad review March, talk about the injury to Jasperi Kotkaniemi, the reworked lines with KK out, Max (not Tie) is fitting into the Canes system, the Canes are hot since the passing of the trade deadline, TSN article on the disaparity of NHL penalties comparing Avs and Canes, RBA's response to the TSN article, will the article affect the reffing, Keith Yandle ironman streak probably ends at 989. A brief segment on the Udvar-Hazy Center in Chanitlly, VA (planes!) and it's Autism Awareness Month! (#RedInstead)
A last minute phonecall where Ray and I briefly go through the KK deal and the Max Domi trade, how the deal breaks down, and what this could mean going forward. Maybe we'll eventually get yesterday's Trade Talk episode out eventually.
On this week's podcast, Ray and Brad have Patty on the program talking Canes pucks as always. We talk about Patty's story, another Penguin's convert, moving from CA to NC, long time STH and game 7 of 2006. Patty brings up some great points about how the ACC factors into the Hurricanes growth cycle in NC. We also talk Kotkaniemi extension, and Brad tosses out a different name for "odd man out" as far as Canes' centers go (you gotta listen to find out whom). We wrap it up talking Canes vs Avs in a "Best of the NHL" match round 1, and quickly preview the Flyers and the Penguins. Also, I might have missed a worty-dird in editing so my apologize if I did!
So what are the topics this week? We speak with Caniac and Wolviac (Trademark us) Erich who speaks to us about the Canes AHL affiliate the Chicaco Wolves. We talk AHL players, do the Canes go for a trade and if so how do our AHLers fit in to the equation. The Avalanche are scary good, do they go after a goaltender like Fleury? The 2023 Stadium Series is officially coming to Carter-Finley in Raleigh on 2/18/23, book your hotels now! We discussed the lack or originality in opponent choice and toss out some of our ideas, and we talk about how tailgating in NC is on a whole 'nother level. We pretend the Caps game didn't happen and jump to the Pens game for our thoughts - Staal and Trocheck lead the way; and don't forget that although the Pens are among least penalized teams, that doesn't mean they commit the least penalties.
This week Brad and Ray talk to Gina T, a home grown hockey fan who exemplifies what it means to be a Caniac. We talk about Gina's introduction to hockey via her boyfriend (now husband) Tom, their switch to Caniacs (sorry Penguins), the Storm Surge, and we answer show friend Erich's question about Gina's favorite player Brett Pesce, Twitch streamer. On the topic of Pesce, we discuss what prompts people to plunk down money for a jersey, what makes those players stand out? We answer Samantha from Philly who asked about what to do on defense with Smith and TDA out long term as well. We hit the high points of the last 4 games including the Pesce OT winner and the ability to close out the month above .500, David Ayres game anniversary (and movie!), and Alex Ovechkin's response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. We wrap up this week beginning our push in earnest to get Freddie Andersen into the Vezina talk, because he's earned it. WHEW! That's a lot and we had a lot of fun doing it!
Brad and Ray recap what has been perhaps the Canes worst month so far, can it be salvaged? Is the glass half full or half empty on that Florida OT loss? 5 on 3 woes? Say it ain't so! 2 battles against Pennsylvania on Sunday & Monday followed up by some Blue Jackets and Oilers.
Today we were joined by caniac Haylee, a Bruins fan to start, she's a hard core Caniac now.
We talked about her favorite player Stephen Lorentz, last week's games - is the bottle half full or half empty, trade deadline coming up - Giroux, Shatenkirk, Haylee says team chemistry > any particular player, the loss of Hamilton & Nedeljkovic (old timers vs newer fan thoughts), Ray tears up still over the Ron Francis to Pittsburgh deal, Vegas odds - Canes chance to win the cup at 10.3%, ideas for improving All Star weekend, Haylee's story about how Seth Jarvis shows he's an awesome person, and Haylee shows she's an awesome girlfriend.
We also touched on the "Miracle at Molson" which we're linking to here:
Welcome to the weekend Caniacs. This week Brad and Ray discuss the All Star Weekend (for better or worse), some idea to liven up the game (Bring in the PHF All Stars!), Women's Olympic hockey has started, Raleigh is getting a stadium series game in Feb 2023, Toronto/Hurricanes is always a thrill in one Calgary household, and special thanks to last week's guests Beth & Courtney who are some seriously dedicated hockey fans, and we were thrilled we got to spend some time talking with them.
An amazing (and lengthy!) episode with 1/2 of the From Center Ice Podcast team and a writer/editor of for women's sports. We welcomed Beth and Courtney into the Storm Cellar this week to talk about the hiring of Émilie Castonguay, in general about the intersection of women and hockey (as well as women in hockey). These two passionate fans talked about the Castonguay hiring, women in hockey including Olympics, ECHL, and the PHF, as well as their perspectives of being female fans. We give out some mid-season rankings and although they're Blackhawks fans, we can all agree on some Dougie Hamilton love. If you are someone, like us, who truly wishes to see hockey grow and who thinks that hockey should be for everyone, this is the one episode of ours you should listen to. This weeks' podcast recaps Rangers and Devils, LaFontaine gets the start, new segment "2 minutes minor" explains the basics of the CORSI stat, Andrei Svechnikov earns "Russian Bull" nickname (Him strong, like bull!), 2 racially charged incidents in hockey this week (Boko Imama and Jordan Subban), reference to why Ray dislikes the Habs (2002 Kevin Weekes banana incident), paraphrasing @vfcentericepod's take on the ECHL inciden 35:30), Brad reminds his Bruins loving neighbors what's up, and we talk quickly about next week's schedule including the NJ Devils rematch.
Short week, short description!
Timo Meier goes ham against LA, Ray oversleeps recording day, McDavid doesn't like growing the game, could McDavid or Draisaitl be traded, butt whooping by CBJ - good or bad, LaFontaine debut, Canes vs. Bruins biggest game of the year so far (for Brad), Eric Staal sighting, Go Canes!
In the first episode of 2022, Brad and Ray talk about some amazing Christmas presents and Caniac generosity, RBA's control of the locker room during the team's significant COVID weeks, a heads up that the Canes were featured on Sportsnet's Dangle's Dangits for their 7 goal comeback against the Blue Jackets on New Year's Day, Vegas odds, and the Florida Panthers matchup.

In this episode Ray and Brad got a chance to meet a wonderful Hollander and Caniac, Linda Paans. Linda started following the team when her favorite player Paul Coffey joined the team in 98, and after he left, she decided that there was something special about the group in Raleigh. In this episode we cover a lot of ground including Brad's Paul Coffey in Boston anecdote, Seth Jarvis, Svech vs Crosby, Linda's amazing Canes collection, OTL points good or bad, and Turbo's 350th regular season game with the Hurricanes.
This was a tough one to talk about, and it certainly geared towards adults, we left it mostly unedited so it's kind of a stream on consciousness.

Today Ray and I talk with long time Whalers fan (now Canes fan) Mike D. Listen in as we talk about what it was like to be a Whalers fan when the team moved to NC, as well as how the team is seen now that some time has passed. Mike has some interesting takes on the move from Hartford, and the retiring of jerseys from the franchise's storied history. There may be some controversial opinions on this one, so if you agree or disagree, we want to hear your take on things!

This is our first special edition episode where Ray and I interview Laurel Wheeler, a Caniac from Texas, via Finland. Yes we said Finland! Laurel's story gets better as she tells it, and her enthusiasm for the team is palpable. This was a lot of fun to do, we thank Laurel so much for taking the time to be on the show; she epitomizes what it means to be a Caniac.
Brad and Ray discuss the first 3 games of the Hurricanes/Predators series, take a look around the league, and give their game 4/5 predictions.
