Courtney and Smiley were able to find a way to survive the 2008 recession when it came to sports jobs. However, the COVID-19 virus has forever changed the job landscape. Sports ended almost a month ago. We discuss the ripple effect that the coronavirus has had on the sports industry, from the hourly and freelance employees that are the backbone of most sport organization operations, all the way to the athletes who will only receive another check or two for their skills.
Special events such as the Final Four, Wimbledon, and British Open are all cancelled for this year while the Masters and the French Open are postponed till later in the year. The work that everyone has put into the Tokyo 2020 Olympics will have to wait until 2021!
The hosts also discuss the booming esports industry now that everyone is quarantined at home, from NASCAR's e-Racing to the NBA2K Player's Tournament. Also, WrestleMania still went on with no fans despite the wrestler's blood, sweat, and tears all around the Performance Center in Orlando.
Welcome to another episode of Smiley and Courtney discussing all the the things, well all the people behaving badly.
BUT FIRST, with the National Basketball Association back in action, the hosts kick off the episode with a lightning round of the winners and losers of the opening month of the season, from the Lakers hanging out at the top of the standings to the Warriors quest for the number one pick in the 2020 draft. The NBA looks nothing like last year. NEXT, the hosts move on from the good to the bad... from the horrible injury to Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa injury to the latest drama with the Houston Astros forgetting that stealing signs is still cheating. And, on to the even worse... all the things in the NFL. From the infamous Thursday Night Brawl featuring Myles Garrett and Mason Rudolph, which included accusations of racial slurs, and punishments from which questions still remain. Oh, and the NFL hosted a tryout in Atlanta for Colin Kaepernick... Well, they were supposed to, at least. Finally, the absolute worst... Florida State still doesn’t have a head football coach and this entire thing is starting to look like a case study on how not to run an athletic department. So many things have changed since Courtney and Smiley taped this latest podcast episode!
The hosts took FSU fans to task about giving Willie Taggart some patience after an FSU booster had his four-year-old son sell lemonade to donate to Willie's buyout. Since taping, that booster donated that money to the booster program after FSU Twitter flamed him and apparently became patient!
Courtney and Smiley also tackled NFL topics, no pun intended. This included Antonio Brown, who, since taping, has been signed and released by the Patriots, and is now getting his degree at Central Michigan, and maybe trying to play again. It also included Jalen Ramsey, who at the time of taping, felt disrespected and wanted a trade. Since then, he's had the flu, a back injury, and is expecting a new baby. Jalen was despised by Jags Twitter at the beginning. Now it seems like a change of heart.
Other topics included California's Pay for Play Act, including Tim Tebow's wack argument, LeBron and Ohio State's failed trademarks, and Lavar Ball being real with his son Lonzo, and vice versa.
Enjoy our latest episode and everything that happened before and after!!
Welcome to the NBA Finals week! The Warriors are making their fifth straight appearance (and their first against a team without LeBron on it) and the Toronto Raptors are making their FIRST appearance ever - representing the entire country of Canada. Smiley and Courtney share their Finals predication and chat about KD, Kawhi and their possible free agency decisions.
The co-hosts start with recapping Tiger's Masters hangover also known as that PGA Championship, where he missed the cut. Fortunately, before he curved a pre-round kiss from his girlfriend, FSU Alum Brooks Koepka took home the win! They also chat about the crazy ending of the Preakness also known as the little brother of the Kentucky Derby and the HBCU's attempt at creating at World Series of College Baseball for their member schools. Oh yes, and the host tackle the topic of dysfunctional workplace environments, piggy backing off the never ending drama of Courtney's favorite team, the Los Angeles Lakers. Each host shares stories of leadership, good and bad. Courtney concludes that the Lakers need to figure their house out if they have any hope of regaining their prized position in the NBA.While Courtney and Smiley were taping this episode, NFL free agency went from lukewarm to scolding hot! Odell Beckham Jr. was literally traded to the Cleveland Browns as the hosts were prepping to the tape the show.
They kicked off the show with Smiley giving his opinion of Nick Foles joining the Jags. Then they dived into OBJ’s trade to the Browns that included S Jabril Peppers and a 1st and 3rd round pick. Plus, Antonio Brown is finally free from the Steelers and headed to the west coast and the Oakland Raiders. So the real question becomes Raiders or Browns for the new season of Hard Knocks. Both teams promise to have their share of drama with the cast of characters assembled. Then the hosts dive into the youth sports. The Florida Athletic High School Sports Association sent a “mission statement” to parents asking them to ‘Cool It’. Which leads into the cheating scandal that rocked the news cycle - because one of the mechanisms used to guarantee admission for the students was via the athletic department, especially at the University of Southern California. By the end of the episode the conclusion was, people need to just do better.Just in time before the NBA All-Star Game, This week old conversation between Smiley and Courtney is once again centered around decisions. Notably, those made recently by Kyler Murray, Anthony Davis, and four-star football recruit Nick Cross.
Kyler Murray has decided to go strictly to the NFL. At his size, how will that decision affect his long term success as a professional football career. Anthony Davis did not get traded. How did the decision to make his trade demands public affect his future as a restricted free agent this summer? How will the decision of the Pelicans' GM not trading AD affect his future? (Spoiler, he's been fired since the taping.)
Finally, former FSU commit Nick Cross couldn't come to Tallahassee because his parents wouldn't sign his letter of intent. They wanted him to go to Penn State. (Spoiler, he stayed close to home and committed to Maryland.) This debacle was the focus of the hosts' conversation about decisions and how much our parents affected the decisions that we made as young adults.
We barely talked about the Super Bowl because, well, the Patriots. We didn't talk about the halftime show either because, well, Maroon 5.
