The Pulse of AI podcast: Joining host Jason Stoughton on this podcast is Yonatan Geifman, CEO and co-founder, of Deci AI. Deci recently raised $25 million in a series B to support their ongoing R&D and go to market efforts.
As AI becomes more ubiquitous across companies systems there are two big elephants in the room: One is the black box and bias issue, which we talk about a lot on this show, and the other is the big cost of training AI models.
Solving the cost problem is a billion dollar business, which is why I had Yonatan on the show, because he believes that his company has the answer. I love what they are doing and I think you will as well.
As crypto has fallen from its previous perch high up in the atmosphere where the air gets a little thin back down here to earth where us mere mortals live it is an interesting time to say the least. Everyone is trying to figure out where we go from here. In a lot of ways this reminds me of the dotcom crash where afterwards many people walked away and said “well that whole internet thing was fun but time to get back to reality”, while others kept working at it and well we know the rest of the story, right?
So the existential question is whether or not we will look back in 5, 10 or 20 years and see this as just the beginning of a multi trillion dollar market with applications for every area of our lives, or if there is something to it, which there obviously is, but maybe the opportunity isn't as big as the hype has suggested?
To talk about and unpack all of this I invited Brad Newman from Baker McKenzie back onto the show. If you are interested in this topic than you are going to really enjoy Brad's insights.

On this podcast I am joined by Byron Reese, to talk about his latest book that just hit the bookshelves titled “Stories, dice and rocks that think: How humans learned to see the future”. Byron is a successful entrepreneur, CEO, futurist and award winning author.
If you are like me and believe the saying that history doesn’t necessarily repeat, but it does rhyme, and so you spend a lot of time studying history in order to get a better understanding of what might happen in the future, then you will love this book.
It’s a tour de force that explores three leaps in history that Byron has identified that he claims made us who we are and that by really understanding these it will change how we think about our future. In this wide ranging conversation we talk about the book, his career, technology in general, transformation and even about how he writes so prolifically.

On this podcast Jason Stoughton is joined by Brad Newman. Brad is a litigation partner at Baker McKenzie and leads the firms North America Machine Learning and AI practice and is the Chair of the American Bar Association Business and Commercial Litigation AI subcommittee.
It is hard to find a company today that does not use AI within their recruitment, screening and hiring process. It has almost become ubiquitous within the hiring industry. However, brad argues that companies are potentially putting themselves at legal risk by using these systems because bias is sometimes unintentionally built into the algorithms.
And in fact, regulatory agencies have announced that they will be taking a hard look at these practices going forward.
But interestingly, Baker McKenzie recently sponsored a survey of C-suite leaders and few felt that there was a significant risk involved with their practices around AI in recruiting and HR. So obviously there is a disconnect in the marketplace.
We unpack all of this and more in the podcast. And I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

On this podcast Jason Stoughton is joined by Alan Cowen, CEO and Chief Scientist, at Hume AI. As AI progresses, both in terms of what it can do and how widely it is deployed, the ability for AI to understand and empathize with our emotions is still a glaring hole in AI’s capabilities. On this podcast Jason and Alan talk about the state of the technology, unpack the hopes and dreams and fears of an AI that understands, and can potentially manipulate, our emotions and how Hume is not only leading the way in advancing AI’s capabilities in this area but is also leading the way in ensuring that AI should service human well being above all else.

As adoption of AI increases so do the concerns around potential bias in the systems. But what do we mean when we talk about bias in AI? And how do we know if our algorithms exhibit bias? And perhaps most importantly, how do we eliminate bias from our AI systems?
On my latest podcast I dig down into all of these issues with one of the foremost authorities on bias in AI, co-founder and Chief Scientist at hot AI start-up Truera, and Carnegie Mellon professor Annupam Datta.
TruEra provides the first suite of AI Quality solutions that help enterprises analyze machine learning, improve and monitor model quality, and build trust.
In many ways the future of AI depends on opening its blackbox and understanding how to make the systems fair and transparent. Failure to do this will put the brakes on AI adoption.
I believe that TruEra is positioned to be a leader in this space.
In addition, Annupam is a really smart and interesting person and I hope you enjoy this discussion as much as I did!
This is my latest podcast with one of Cohere’s Co-Founders, Nick Frosst. Cohere is one of the most exciting companies in the NLP space today.
The company recently emerged from stealth mode with $40 million in Series A funding to pursue their mission to build machines that understand the world and to make them safely accessible for all.
In addition to being backed by top flight vc’s other investors in the company include AI luminaries Geoffrey Hinton and Fei-Fei Li.
It is a hot space, they have a great bunch of people on board, they have a desire to advance AI in a very thoughtful way and they are growing fast. In my opinion this is one of the most exciting companies in the space today.
We dig down into a wide range of topics including the challenges inherent in NLP, the opportunities it presents to business leaders, how companies should look at implementing and deploying AI in their company, where NLP is going and more.
As usual I ask Nick to give us the “pitch” on why you, my hard to recruit audience, should consider applying for some of their open roles!
I hope you enjoy the podcast.
On today’s podcast I sit down with Founder and CEO of Vyasa Analytics Dr. Chris Bouton.
When we talk about life sciences and healthcare it really is the tale of two cities. Life sciences was an early adopter of AI and analytics and the results have been fantastic. But healthcare has been slower to the game for a number of reasons that we will talk about in this podcast.
The reality is that once AI in all of its forms is deployed across the entire healthcare ecosystem we will see lower costs, better patient outcomes and an ability to treat more people at scale. So it is important that those in AI help drive these changes as quickly as possible….for the good of society
I hope you enjoy this podcast as much I did. Let’s get to it!
On this episode of The Pulse of AI podcast I am joined by Steven (“Captain Hoff”) Hoffman to talk about his new book The Five Forces That Change Everything. Steven is an entrepreneur, investor and the founder of Founders Space which is one of the leading start-up accelerators in the world.
The five forces that Steven identifies are mass connectivity, bio convergence, human expansion into space, deep automation and the intelligence explosion (AGI). We talk about the advances in each of these areas that are driving their adoption as well as the potential social, psychological and economic impacts each might (will?) have on us as individuals and on the world writ large.
Steven has some great insights into the coming future. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did.
Sean Gourley, CEO and Founder of Primer, joins to share his thoughts and insights about the threat disinformation poses to western democracies, as well as how to define it, identify it and combat it. His passion combined with his deep experience in the space, the unique perch that he sits on today which allows him to view the full landscape and the work that Primer has done in the space gives him incredible insights that he shares during this conversation. If you are concerned about how malevolent actors are using the latest technologies to sow discord through disinformation then this podcast is for you.
LATEST PODCAST: My guest is Sean Gourley, Founder and CEO of Primer AI.
Joining me on this podcast is CEO and Co-Founder of Primer, Sean Gourley.
As you know I cover AI in all of its various forms and for me NLP is and always has been one of the most exciting areas within the field of AI. And over the past several years the advances we have seen in NLP have been phenomenal and yet business leaders are just now beginning to see the potential that NLP represents. But this is quickly changing as companies like Primer begin to release powerful yet easy to use tools that bring NLP out of the research department and place them in the hands of business users.
Primer recently released a new product line called Primer Engines. These are pre-trained engines that can be layered over your data allowing you to do the types of things that just a few years ago were plot lines in Hollywood movies.
And just as importantly, or maybe even more so, they are designed so that even non-technical business users can easily use them. What used to take months and a significant amount of investment in terms of people and money can now be done in a day. Literally. As Sean likes to say they are reducing the cost of curiosity. All of this makes his company, in my opinion, one of the most exciting players in the space.
I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I did.
This is the first in a four part series exploring how data and AI are set to really disrupt healthcare through conversations with the disruptors themselves including entrepreneurs, founders and AI experts. My goal is to discover exactly how AI and data are being used now, the barriers holding back innovation and what these experts think healthcare will look like in 10 years.
On today’s podcast, the first in the series, I am joined by Andrew Eye who is the founder and CEO of ClosedLoop AI. ClosedLoop describes itself as “Healthcares data science platform”. Purpose build and dedicated to healthcare, ClosedLoop combines an intuitive end to end machine learning platform with a comprehensive library of healthcare specific features and model templates. They have taken a vertical approach and it is really paying off both for them and their customers.
On this podcast I am joined by Braden Hancock who is a co-founder and Head of Technology at Snorkel AI. Snorkel AI is unlocking a better, faster way to build applications With Snorkel Flow, the first truly data-centric AI platform. To date they have raised over $50 million from top VC firms such as Greylock, Lightspeed, GV and others.
Snorkel AI is solving a real problem that has been holding back AI adoption by simplifying data labeling and making AI projects look more like software development efforts. Delivering both successfully will encourage companies to more fully embrace AI by removing some of the barriers and hassles that make “doing AI” so difficult.
On this podcast we talk about Braden’s journey to entrepreneurship, the origin story of Snorkel, how their approach to data labeling works and how it helps unlock the power of AI in the enterprise, why SME’s are the key to data labelling and why Snorkel’s approach empowers them, why you should drop what you are doing and immediately send in a resume and much more.
I am excited for this conversation because Snorkel AI is solving a real problem in the industry that has been holding back AI adoption and I am just really impressed with their team. In my opinion this is definitely a company to keep an eye on.
Let’s get to it!
Online platforms are overwhelmed with speech that is harmful. Companies are trying to get their hands around the problem in order to solve it, because it is driving people off their platforms in droves. But it is a difficult problem to solve. Companies need to establish policies, set up governance committees and protocols, find technical solutions and hire moderators.
Justin Dave, Co-Founder and CEO of Spectrum Systems, founded his company to attack this problem with Contextual AI.
I invited Justin onto the show because I love what Spectrum Labs is doing but I also think that he has great insights into the problem and the range of approaches needed to solve it.

On this podcast I am joined by Phil Le-Brun, former CIO of McDonalds and now Enterprise Strategist @ AWS, and Bret Greenstein, SVP and Global Head of AI and Analytics @ Cognizant to talk about how companies can create a data centered and driven culture. and why treating data as a first class citizen is important to this process.
Data is moving from the IT department into the business units and the heavy lifting of digital transformation going forward is really going to be around creating a culture that is data driven and that treats data as a first class citizen.
On this podcast I am joined by Pallab Deb, Head of Partner Solutions and AI Partnerships at Google Cloud and Bret Greenstein, SVP and Global Head of the AI and Analytics Practice at Cognizant to talk about the value of data.
As companies increasingly look to leverage data in their business processes, and as data has moved from the IT department to the business units, the need to understand the value of data, set up processes and build a culture to include business partners in the use of data and fully center their organization around data has become critical to a company's success.
These two thought leaders offer insights, advice and real world examples to help you do just that!
On this podcast I am joined by JG Chirapurath, VP Azure Data, Artificial Intelligence & Edge and Bret Greenstein, SVP and Global Head of the AI and Analytics Practice at Cognizant to talk about how business leaders can use data in times of rapid change.
If you are trying to figure out how to navigate a world where your historical data models have been made obsolete by the disruption caused by Covid then this is a podcast that will help.
In this wide ranging discussion these two thought leaders offer insights, advice and real world examples to help you address this challenge and thrive.
Data perishability is always an issue but it gains significance in times of rapid change. Covid brought into stark relief just how volatile the world can be, and of course volatility wreaks havoc on historical data models. As business leaders accelerate their focus on data they are realizing that they need to take different approaches to derive maximum value from their data.
Over the next four podcasts I will be joined by thought leaders, business leaders and technologists in the AI and Data space to talk about how companies should be looking at their data in times of rapid change.
On this podcast I am joined by two executives from Cognizant - Bret Greenstein, SVP and Global Head of the AI and Analytics practice and Babak Hodjat, VP of Evolutionary AI.
We dig down into the issues around data perishability and explore ways leaders should be adjusting to a volatile world. We also talk about how Cognizants approach using Evolutionary AI helps solve this problem.
Countries are rushing to create national AI strategies that will ensure that they dominate the field of AI for the foreseeable future. This involves investing in research, fostering and encouraging partnerships between government, academia and business as well as making sure that we train our current workers, as well as our young people, in the skills they need to fill the well paying jobs of the future. AI is built on data and so we also need to find a responsible way to collect and use data which respects the privacy of US citizens while allowing breakthroughs in AI technologies. In short, we have some heavy lifting ahead of us to make sure that we get it right.
On this podcast I am joined by Congressman Frank Lucas (R-OK) and Bret Greenstein of Cognizant to talk about all of these issues. It is a fascinating conversation because we get the perspective of a policy leader as well as a senior executive at a leading AI company.
I am pleased to have Congressman McNerney (R-CA) and Bret Greenstein, Senior Vice President and Head of the AI and Analytics Practice at Cognizant, joining me on this podcast to talk about the Future of Work in a world quickly being transformed by Artificial Intelligence.
We all know that AI will eliminate some jobs, create many new jobs and will fundamentally change all jobs. To prepare our current workers, as well as those who are in school and yet to enter the workforce, for the new and exciting jobs of the future we need a concerted effort between government and business.
In this interesting and far ranging conversation we explore the issue and talk about ways that government and business can help both individually, and in partnership, to ensure that our workforce is prepared.
For anyone interested in this topic this really is a must listen. I hope you find the conversation thought provoking.
For this discussion I am joined by Congressman Will Hurd of Texas and Bret Greenstein of Cognizant to talk about what a national AI strategy should look like here in the United States.
Congressman Hurd (R-TX) along with Robin Kelly (D-IL), and working closely with the Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC), recently released a white paper on a national artificial intelligence strategy called “AI and the Workforce”.
Recommendations of the white paper include:
Bret Greenstein is the Senior Vice President and Global Head of the AI & Analytics Practice at Cognizant, leading over 26,000 associates worldwide focused on Data and AI based transformation
Bringing together these two leading voices, one from government and the other from industry, gives us the opportunity uniquely explore issues that are central to developing an effective national AI strategy including:
On this show I am joined by Stephanie Forrest and Risto Miikkulainen to talk about Evolutionary AI: What it is, how it is being used today, the challenges it faces, the opportunities it offers and what its future might entail. If you are at all interested in Evolutionary AI then you will find this discussion extremely informative and interesting. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
On this podcast I am joined by Kenneth Stanley, currently of OpenAI, and Babak Hodjat, VP of Evolutionary AI at Cognizant, to talk about creativity, novelty search, Evolutionary AI, open endedness and all things in between. I was absolutely blown away by the breadth and depth of the insights around these topics.
On this podcast I am joined by Quoc Le and Risto Miikkulainen to talk about AutoML and the future direction of AI. Risto is an associate VP of Evolutionary AI at Cognizant and also a professor at the University of Texas. Quoc Le needs little introduction because he is one of the preeminent thought leaders in AI today and is known for many things including co-founding Google Brain and as the person behind AutoML.
On this podcast I am joined by Dr. Jordan Pollack and Babak Hodjat to talk about the Demystification of AI. It is hard to find two people who add more value to this conversation than these two guests. Both are preeminent thought leaders in the field and in this wide ranging and lively conversation we cover a lot of ground that will be interesting to anyone involved in the field of AI generally and Evolutionary AI specifically. Our discussion range’s from the theoretical to the practical and the insights that are provided by both are invaluable.
World renowned AI thought leader’s Joydeep Ghosh and Risto Miikkulainen join me on this podcast in a wide ranging discussion centered around the issue of Trustworthiness in AI. As our businesses and society increasingly rely on AI the issues around trust and explainability have become much more important. And in fact, failure to successfully address the issue will hamper further adoption of AI. Whether you are a business leader, AI scientist, or a policy maker this podcast will help you understand the issues, both technical and philosophical, around explainability and trust in AI, and will give you insights into ways that top companies and scientists are successfully addressing this challenge. We also talk about how Evolutionary AI can be a key tool in helping create more trustworthy AI.
Ever since the Covid pandemic spread across the globe many have asked the question “where is AI in this fight”? And it is a valid question because many of the techniques used in AI require large amounts of training data, which a new pandemic like Covid simply lacks.
However, a project developed by Babak Hodjat and Risto Miikulainen and their team at Cognizant has come the closest I have seen to answering this question. The system uses evolutionary AI which requires less data, utilizes creativity and goes beyond forecasting to basically providing advice. Babak gave me a demo last week and it is pretty exciting and so I wanted to bring them on the podcast so that they could share it with you and talk about what is under the hood.
In addition to Babak and Risto I am also joined by Bret Greenstein who is the Senior Vice President and Global Head of the Ai and Analytics Practice at Cognizant to talk about how the amazing work they have done is also relevant for business leaders.
