Shane McConkey was the most influential skier or snowboarder of our time. Not only was he an incredible athlete, but he was also one of those innovators who was always tinkering with products to make the sport better and more fun. Between lobbying for mid-fats in the late 90s and pioneering rocker technology in the 2000s, there is not another athlete I can think of who has done more for progressing. On top of all that, Shane was a funny, laugh-out-loud comedian, and on the podcast this week, I take you through my trip to the McConkey PMS event and get some funny Shane stories from folks like Sherry McConkey, JT Holmes, Scott Gaffney, Mike Douglas, Chris Davenport and many more.

Stanley Larsen was one of the original Hot Doggers. Known for his loose contest runs that earned him titles like Canadian National Champion, French Freestyle Champion, Swiss Aerial Champion, and European Champion, Stanley was so much more than a contest guy. Fifty years before the Nimbus Crew existed, Stanley Larsen was looked at as the first skier to look at the mountain like a blank canvas and make art with his skiing. And when his skiing was done, Stanley made art in Hollywood, directing Super Bowl commercials and more. On the podcast, we talk about his counterculture roots, Dick Barrymore, Warren Miller, The Marlboro Tour, the death of hotdog skiing, and more. These history lessons are important and not to be missed.

While Mike Marolt is a US Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame Member and a badass ski mountaineer, he never really had a pro ski career. He makes his money as a CPA. Ski-wise, Mike did so many incredible things, at high altitudes-without using oxygen, sherpa, or drugs, but he was always treated like Rodney Dangerfield. He and his crew never got the respect they deserved. On the podcast, we talk about the Marolt family roots in Aspen, his identical twin brother, college baseball, and his incredible resume full of American firsts in ski descents, and more.

Micah Evangelista isn’t a household name in the ski world, almost by choice. Micah is the underground, soul-skier type whose love of being in the mountains comes from growing up in the shadow of Mt Baker in Glacier, WA. The podcast was the perfect platform to figure out why…we talk about getting into video early, Baker’s deep snowboard history, Lucas DeBari, why bringing a big-name pro isn’t the motivation for him, and a lot more.

As the Vice President of the International Freeskiers Association, an organization she helped co-found with Shane McConkey, she was a 1-woman band creating the infrastructure for the future of ski contests outside of what fell under FIS control. And go figure, this year, the crown jewel of big mountain freeride competitions, FIS, purchased the Freeride World Tour. Drew Petersen’s life and times have been defined by highs and lows from the time he was a little kid. On one hand, he lived in Colorado and developed a passion for skiing young. While that passion grows, so does depression and bipolar disorder, which is not diagnosed until much later in life. Combining that with a life of winning ski contests on the weekends and then returning to school as the smart, intense kid wasn’t the best combination. But Drew pushed through, made it as a pro skier, then had terrible accidents in the mountains, with a lot of head trauma and the suicidal thoughts became way stronger than they were at 9 years old. Mike Styskal, aka Styk, has lived his life as a creative force in snowboard design, but Styk is so much more than that. He's one of those people that exudes effortless cool: he always has a different unique look, and his sense of style is always on point. Brant Moles is one of those legends that have zero ego. While he’s a quiet guy, he’s not afraid to share what happened with his career…and in the first part of his career, he was a Wisconsin-based ski racer who went to an east coast academy with the goal of making the US Ski Team…but with all stories like Brant’s, politics play a role. When that happens, it usually doesn’t work out. The good thing is Brant Moles’ career isn’t remembered for racing; it’s remembered for winning extreme contests, filming with the heavy hitters of his time, and helping lobby the industry to make fat skis. Brant Moles helped change the sport of skiing with product and how he used it in Alaska, and his story is one that should have been told long ago….but this is his first podcast.

Michelle Parker has made a name for herself in the big mountains, but her roots go all over the board when it comes to sports and skiing. An elite soccer player with a big future, Michelle was forced to choose between soccer and ski racing at a young age. She chose ski racing, became a Junior Olympic Champion, and then quit racing in favor of the park and skiing powder. While Michelle competed for a bit, injuries made her realize that contests were not her thing and her focus shifted entirely to filming. She’s arguably one of the most important skiers this century. Eric Schrijn is a street skater with legendary status and infinite wisdom. He was the winner of the first ever IMYTA street contest, he’s had timeless video sections, magazine covers, pro model products and X Games hardware. While he was making this happen, he was also dealing with a family suicide, a diagnosis of bi-polar and managing all of that. Throughout it all, Eric has been on the forefront of progression as an athlete and as a person, he’s one of my favorite athletes to travel, hang and podcast with. Some good stories come out of this one.

Marco de Santi has the most interesting journey of any athlete I’ve had on the podcast. Born in a less than desirable situation in Sao Paolo, Brazil, Marco did what every kid does; he played soccer until he found skateparks. Marco quit team sports and headed to the USA at age 15, with literally nothing, to make his pro skating dream happen. While Marco eventually became a world Champion, inline was dropped by X-Games, and the organizing body of his sport didn’t include Marco in future events. So the first skater to land a triple was forced out of competition and into a life of LOVE, which he performs in every night with the Cirque de Soleil. It doesn’t get more rags to riches than this one.
Marco de Santi Show Notes:

Paddy Graham wasn’t supposed to be a pro skier wearing a Red Bull helmet. He’s from Sheffield, and everyone knows Brits for their football, not their talent in the mountains. But Paddy changed that school of thought, and it all started on a dry slope. Yep, before Paddy was filming powder segments, he learned how to ski on carpet. And that magic carpet had taken Paddy all over the world in pursuit of deep snow and the biggest jumps ever built. We talk about his interesting journey, the Legs of Steel crew, getting the most airtime ever, and so much more on the podcast. It’s a different road map than most take to becoming a pro skier. Paul Crandell is more connected to radical people than anyone I’ve had on the podcast. LP, as he’s known, has done everything when it comes to events. He started as the banner guy, complete with all the zip ties and in just a couple years, he became the puppet master, complete with all the Red Bull budgets. After a decade of creating and executing the most important events in the world, it was onto the GoPro rocket ship, where he experienced the pain of going public, cashed out and is now all about kindness.
