We have reached a momentous milestone with The Magic Word Podcast with this episode #750. Who better to feature than the international illusionist, television star, and creator, Luis De Matos. He has won numerous awards for his magic over the decades and been heralded by the Portuguese press at the age of 25 as being the “David Copperfield of Portugal.” He was the youngest magician to receive “The Devant Award” from The Magic Circle when he was 41 years old and the “Magician of the Year” from the Academy of Magical Arts when he was just 29 years old. Luis has since progressed and become an international sensation touring with his own show as well as with “The Illusionists” in 2013-2018.

Since opening in the U.K. in 2013, the Champions of Magic show has entertained nearly a half million people with their live performances. From London to New York City to Los Angeles and everywhere in between, this troupe of performers continues to pack theaters and make the news. Cold Shock is an actual physical response that often results in death. It is a series of neurogenic cardio-respiratory responses caused by sudden immersion in cold water. In cold water immersions, such as by falling through thin ice, people will often quickly inhale which results in drowning by inhaling water.
We pick up this week with the second and final episode of our series with Alex Ramon where he talks about his “brush with death” by performing a live, online underwater escape from Lake Tahoe. He goes through his entire mindset from start to end and discusses all the many, many hurdles he had to overcome to do this extreme stunt.

Alex Ramon has been performing in Lake Tahoe, California for over a decade with a residency where he has headlined in every local casino showroom. There is no one better who fits the title of “Mr. Tahoe” having been seen by hundreds of thousands of people who visit this vacation destination all year long. He also found success performing virtual shows during COVID which he still performs today. While attending the 2023 Magifest in Columbus, Ohio, I sat down with one of the performers/lecturers, Kyle Purnell. He impressed me when we first met at the TRICS convention with his charming personality and crazy good creativity. He has since been on “Penn & Teller Fool Us” and he continues to make a name for himself with his innovative and eclectic creations, and not just card tricks. He has a Penguin Lecture that captured some of his creative ideas, but I’m certain that with his brain full of information, there will be more to come. Kyle Purnell is definitely one magician to keep on your radar.
