No Country for Old Men Film Summary and Movie Synopsis It’s June 1980 in Terrell County, Texas; a place of expansive open land. Sheriff Bell reflects on the increasing violence in the area that seems to be out of control. Meanwhile, a hitman named Anton Chigurh escapes custody by strangling to death the deputy who had the nerve to arrest him. He flees in the deputy’s car until he can pull over an unsuspecting citizen, and kill them for their car. Llewelyn Moss is a welder and Vietnam veteran hunting in the middle of nowhere. He stumbles upon a bad drug deal where there are many dead men and a briefcase with two million dollars in it. Moss takes the money and runs home. Later that night, Moss can’t sleep, and he returns to the scene to give water to a dying man he left there. However, a group of men from the cartel in a truck arrive as well, and shoot at Moss. He barely escapes with his life. Knowing that the men will be able to track where he lives in the morning, he makes his wife, Carla Jean, head home to her mother’s, and he holds up in the motel Del Rio. There, Moss hides the briefcase in an air duct. The rival cartel’s bosses hire Anton Chigurh to get their money back at all costs. He finds Moss’ abandoned truck at the scene, and locates his home. He breaks in to Moss’ house with a bolt pistol that can blow the lock out of the door. By now, Sheriff Bell is on the case, and he arrives at Moss’ home to investigate minutes after Chigurh leaves. He notices the blown out lock, and his deputy draws his gun. This makes the Sheriff smile as he never feels the need to draw his gun. The money hides a tracking device, and Chigurh uses it to find the location of the briefcase. He encounters a group of Mexicans, working for the original cartel, waiting to kill Moss as he returns to the room. Instead, Chigurh kills them all. Luckily, Moss also rented another room adjacent to that one, and he quietly escapes with the money. At the next hotel, Moss finds the tracking device shoved into the money, but he’s too late to turn it off, and disappear from Chigurh. Chigurh is at his door, and again he blows the lock out of the door with the bolt pistol. Moss shoots him before Chigurh can open the door. Moss escapes out the window with the money, and both men shoot at each other in the streets. Badly wounded, Moss stumbles across the border, and into Mexico. He tosses the briefcase into the bushes on the banks of the Rio Grande before crossing. The next morning, a Mariachi Band finds Moss bleeding on the street, and they take him to the hospital. Carson Wells, another hired thug, finds Moss at the hospital, and tries to get Moss to give him part of the money in return for protection from Chigurh. Moss declines at first. Back in town, Chigurh attends to his wounds, and then finds and kills Wells at his hotel. While there, Moss calls Wells, but Chigurh answers. He tells Moss that he will kill his wife, Carla Jean, if Moss doesn’t give him the money. He says Moss is a dead man regardless, but he can spare her life by doing the right thing. Moss hangs up on Chigurh, snatches back the briefcase from the Rio Grande, and tells Carla Jean to meet him at a motel in El Paso. Before she leaves, Carla Jean calls Sheriff Bell, and accepts his offer of protection for her husband.

Magnolia Pictures released God Bless America to theaters on May 11, 2012; grossing $926,632 worldwide. Bobcat Goldthwait directed the dark comedy which starred Joel Murray, Tara Lynne Barr, and Mackenzie Brooke Smith. God Bless America Movie Summary Frank Murdoch is a 40-something man who hates what ‘Murica has become; a rude, pop-culture dominated society that has long since lost its civility, and he longs to do something about it. He teeters on the edge of sanity, but eventually, three major events push him over the edge. His wife divorces him. His boss fires him for sexual harassment; stemming from a kind gesture towards a female employee, and finally his diagnosis of a terminal brain tumor. Frank decides to kill himself, but changes his mind at the last second when a reality show about a spoiled, rich teeny bopper pops up on his TV. Frank decides to kill the show’s “star” Chloe instead. He steals his neighbor’s car, and heads off to kill the girl. Roxy, a classmate of Chloe, witnesses her murder. Roxy tracks Frank down at a motel, and interrupts his next suicide attempt. When Frank explains to Roxy that he only wants to kill people who act cruelly towards others for their own personal amusement, the two decide to go on a killing spree that takes them cross country. Eventually, after many murders, Roxy wants to “go legit” by moving to France, and live a normal life. Frank doesn’t agree to this because he knows his brain tumor will soon kill him, but his doctor leaves Frank a message asking to talk to him. The good doctor tells him that he diagnosed the wrong Frank, and he isn’t going to die from a tumor. Frank cheers up a bit, but then he sees a report on the news about a missing girl. The worried parents are Roxy’s parents, and Frank learns Roxy isn’t who she appears to be. Angry, Frank lets Roxy know he knows the truth, and steals the truck of a man he just killed; leaving Roxy his other car to drive wherever she wants to go. Frank heads to Hollywood where he plans on killing as many of the cast, crew, and fans of the television show, American Superstarz, as possible. He buys an AK-47, and drives to the studio. Frank makes it to the main stage on live TV, and kills the main judge. As he holds the remaining judges and audience hostage, a SWAT team, from the balcony above, surrounds him. Roxy runs out of the crowd, and joins Frank on stage. Frank tells Roxy she is a pretty girl, and hands her the AK-47. He pulls out another gun, and the two begin shooting everyone. The dynamic duo go out in a blaze of glory as the police gun them down. Mark Renton, Sick Boy Williamson, Spud Murphy, and Tommy MacKenzie are all heroin addicts while their friend, Franco Begbie is a psychopath who is unable to come to terms with the fact he has homosexual urges. Renton quits heroin, and confines himself to a hotel room while he goes through withdrawals. As the cloud of addiction lifts from his head, Renton’s sex drive returns, and he ends up having sex with a 15 year old girl named Diane who has snuck into a nightclub he’s at. Renton agrees to continue on the relationship with Diane after she blackmails him about going to the police over the encounter. Eventually, Renton goes back to heroin, as does his buddies, Spud and Sick Boy. Tommy has never done heroin up to this point, but after his girlfriend dumps him, he starts using the drug as well. During this binge, Allison, a fellow addict, comes to, and realizes that her baby is dead from neglect. Renton and Spud are arrested stealing from a bookstore, and Spud is sent to jail. Renton dodges prison by entering a drug prevention program to get clean. Renton falls off the wagon one day, and heads over to his old drug dealer’s place where he overdoses. His dealer tosses him into a cab, and sends him to the hospital. Renton’s parents take him home, and lock him in his room. As he goes through withdrawals yet again, he hallucinates about HIV, and Allison’s dead baby. Eventually, his parents wake him up so he can get tested for the disease. He tests negative (so we can assume that Diane is negative too), but Tommy isn’t so lucky. Heroin has taken over his life, and he’s now on death’s door from HIV. By now, Renton has has enough of Edinburgh, and he moves to London. He begins to turn his life around now that he’s sober, but back home Sick Boy is now a pimp, Spud finally gets out of jail, and Begbie is wanted for armed robbery. Begbie and Sick Boy soon show up on Renton’s doorstep, and move in without asking, but they all have to return home to Edinburgh when Tommy dies from an AIDS related illness. Once there, the four friends decide to sell £4,000 of heroin to a drug dealer for £16,000. After the successful deal, Renton steals all the money from his sleeping friends. The film ends with Begbie getting arrested for destroying the hotel room after he wakes, and a voice-over from Renton vowing to live a stable, drug-free life, and him leaving Spud £2,000 in a locker. He makes his living by grinding his enemies and prisoners, and poor into water. Here too lives a boy so simple that he’s only called The Kid. His sole method of transportation is his BMX he rides…just like his favorite comic book hero, Turbo Rider. One day, The Kid meets an odd girl named Apple on some swings in the middle of nowhere. She follows him home because he dropped his comic book. He allows her to stay with him for a bit because he has a turbo boner for her. One of Zeus’ men finds the two, and snatches Apple. The Kid runs from the minions, and ends up in the real Turbo Rider’s bunker where his remains decay. The Kid takes Turbo Rider’s armor and wrist-weapon thingy, and sets off to become the comic book hero by saving the lovely Apple. We next meet Frederic, the bestest arm-wrestling cowboy in these here parts. He gets himself captured while trying to rescue his brother from Zeus, but Zeus is ready. He captures Frederic, cuts off his right hand, and then tosses him in a pit called the “Arena” where Apple happens to be. The Kid gets himself captured too, and tossed into the arena for a big reunion, but then the three hatch a big plan and manage to escape. When Apple gets shot during the melee and survives, The Kid realizes she’s a robot. They go to a robot graveyard to get spare parts to repair her. Zeus’ minions eventually find them, but The Kid and Apple escape again. Apple gets decapitated this time, and The Kid repairs her by giving her a new robot body, but then he passes out from the toxic fumes in the air. Later when The Kid wakes up, he finds that Frederic helped them escape, and he now has his own robotic hand to help whoop some ass, but he says that Apple can’t be reactivated. The two return to Zeus’ compound for one last bit of revenge. Many of Zeus’ minions are killed, but The Kid gets captured. As he’s about to be killed, Apple shows up and saves him. Zeus then takes things into his own hands, and shoots our three heroes. The Kid is saved by some old View-Master discs that he keeps under his turbo suit, and kills Zeus’ last few minions. That wrist-weapon thingy is really handy. When he tries to off Zeus, we learn that Zeus is, in fact, a robot. The Kid blows Zeus to bits with explosives, and Apple dies protecting The Kid from the blast. The explosion reveals an underground water source, that will help the people of the Wasteland. The Kid buries Apple, and rides off into the apocalyptic sunset while Frederic stays behind to play waterman. They piss off the audience with a cover of Dead Kennedys’ “Nazi Punks Fuck Off,” but they win the crowd back with their remaining songs. The band gets paid for the show and hightails it out, but Sam has forgotten her phone in the green room. Pat goes back to retrieve it, but he enters without knocking, and stumbles upon Emily, who has just been killed with a knife to the head. Her friend Amber sits next to her in fear for her life. Bouncers, Gabe and Big Justin, corral the band in the green room with the body at gunpoint, and take their phones until the club owner, Darcy, arrives. Darcy is not a nice man. He’s a neo-Nazi drug dealer, and he aims to kill the kids to hide the original murder. The rest of the film is a bloody tale of survival where band member after band member gets killed until only Pat and Amber are left. They go on the attack and eventually defeat the neo-nazis and Darcy. The two sit exhausted, on the side of the road, and wait for the police to arrive for a happy ending. This feat is called a “Big Year.” Brad Harris and Stu Preissler compete with Kenny Bostick to be the world’s greatest birder. Bostick looks to beat his world record of 732 bird species counted with Brad and Stu on his heels. Brad is a divorcee who works as an IT guy at a power plant, and is very lonely. Stu is a successful CEO trying to retire for the 2nd time, but he is unable to let go. Bostick is a successful contractor, but his birder obsession is straining his marriage. Having just set the record for species found the previous year, Bostick leaves his wife again for another year. He tells her he must go out again just to make sure no one tries to break his record. Soon enough, Bostick comes across Stu and Brad. All three men are doing a Big Year, but they deny they are doing it. Seeing them as competition, Bostick outwits the men as Stu and Brad bond. Over the course of the year, the men find as many bird species as possible whilst coming to realizations about their life and future. Brad realizes he simply wants to find love, and falls for fellow birder and bird caller Ellie. Stu retires to spend time with his family and his new grandson. Bostick commits to being the best birder in the world, while his wife picks up and leaves him. The men realize these goals by the end of the film with Bostick breaking his own record again, and winning the “Bird Year.” Now that he is single, he heads to China alone to see more birds. Brad and Stu laugh about finishing behind Bostick, and realize how their year was about much more than just birding. Ken likes the city and its sights, but Ray hates everything about the town. On a night when Ray can’t stand being in their hotel room any longer, the two decide to look around the town to see what it has to offer. They stumble upon a movie being filmed there, and Ray takes delight in one of the actors, Jimmy, who’s a midget…a little person…a dwarf. Ray also spots Chloë who is the film’s production assistant, and he takes a keen interest in her. Little does he know that she’s also a local drug dealer. This gets him into trouble a few nights later when the two go on a date, and her boyfriend tries to rob Ray at gunpoint, but instead, Ray steals his gun, and fires it in his face. Luckily for him, the gun is just loaded with blanks, and he only loses an eye from the blast. Harry finally calls Ken while Ray is out, and he orders Ken to kill Ray as punishment for killing the boy. The next day, Ken gets a gun from Harry’s local dealer, and finds Ray in a park. As Ken is about to shoot Ray, he sees that Ray is about to commit suicide because of his guilt about killing the little boy, and stops him. Instead of killing Ray himself, Ken tells him of Harry’s orders, and urges him to leave Bruges. Ray hops the next train out of the city, and Ken calls Harry to let him know that he’ll have to do the deed himself if he wants Ray dead. Harry is enraged, and hightails it down to Bruges to kill Ken and Ray. Meanwhile, Ray gets arrested on the train for beating up a Canadian couple while out on his earlier date with Chloë, and hauled back to Bruges. Chloë bails him out, and the two go to the town square for drinks. Meanwhile meanwhile, Harry has arrived, and finds Ken in another part of the town square. The two head then head to the top of a tower in the square where Harry is going to kill Ken. At the top, Harry shoots Ken out of anger when he finds out that Ray is actually still in town, and he races down the tower to kill him. Ken throws himself out of the tower as his only means to warn Ray that Harry is in town. Harry chases after Ray, and eventually shoots him several times, but in doing so, he also accidentally kills the dwarf that’s dressed as a schoolboy. Thinking that he has killed a child, Harry kills himself on principle alone. Ray is taken to a hospital, and we hear his inner monologue say that he hopes he doesn’t die.
