The Ghostbusters Task Force is Formed
On an unseasonably cool Saturday evening in April of 1979, death stalked 63-year-old Anna Williams and her 24-year-old granddaughter, Rebecca, in a small house next to a gulley at 615 South Pinecrest St. in Wichita, Kansas. Dennis Rader, also known as BTK, was excitedly hiding in her closet, waiting for Mrs. Williams to come home so that he could finally complete Project Pinecone, his codename for their brutal murders he had been anxiously planning for months. Unfortunately for Rader, fate would step in for both women in unbelievable ways, sparing their lives.
By July 1984, with no breaks in the case, investigators developed the BTK task force nicknamed the “Ghostbusters.” With seven years’ worth of DNA evidence, lists of males who lived within 1 ¼ mile of the victims, a list of white males attending Wichita State University between 1974 and 1979, the names of everyone who checked out the engineering book where the Otero letter was found and the addition of a computer consultant to the team, investigators were able to generate 225 possible suspects.
Was Dennis Rader on any of these lists or named as a potential suspect? Stay tuned as we find out just how close Anna Williams came to becoming BTK’s 8th victim and how close investigators really were to taking Dennis Rader off the streets.

S2E4 BTK Part 4 - Nancy Jo Fox - How Many Do I Have to Kill
December 9th, 1977, just 16 days before Christmas, was a day that would change the lives of Dale and Ruth Fox forever. This was the day they learned their daughter; 25-year-old Nancy Fox was the victim of a brutal murder in her small, pink, two-room duplex apartment where she’d lived alone for the last two years. Dennis Rader had begun preparations for “Project Foxhunt” long before this fateful night, even going so far as to visit her work more than once to get a better idea of who she was. Rader felt no need to change his methods and continued to surprise women when they came home only this time, he added to his repertoire.
Not long after Nancy Fox became BTK’s 7th victim, Dennis Rader began to wonder why he wasn’t getting more airtime on the news. He figured that by this time, he was a big deal in Wichita, Kansas, and decided that if they weren’t going to discuss him voluntarily then he was going to make it happen. He didn’t just want to be a local story, he wanted national attention, and this is when things really started getting weird. Welcome to Part 4 of our series on BTK where we give an extremely detailed look into the murder of Nancy Fox and the subsequent contact of BTK with the media and investigators which starts the games Rader enjoyed playing with law enforcement.

Hello everyone and welcome to season 2 episode 3 of The American Serial Killer Guidebook. I’m your host Elton Morgan and today we will be discussing the BTK murder of Shirley Vian Relford who was unlucky enough to have her son spotted by Dennis Rader then followed effectively destroying their lives and making her his 6th victim when his first and second targets, which Rader called Project Green and Project Blackout, weren’t home.
Not only did Rader strip and murder this poor woman, but he locked her three children up in the bathroom just feet away forcing them to listen as their mother was brutally strangled. To make matters worse, her 6-year-old son watched the entire ordeal through the bathroom keyhole. Make sure to listen until the end of the episode where we will reveal some new information that is a surprising twist no one is going to expect.

April 4th, 1974, was a cold spring day in Wichita, Kansas, and the day that Dennis Rader, known as BTK, decided to complete his next project as he referred to his murders. His first killings of the Otero Family, which he called Project Little Mex, were less than three months prior but he now had a taste for it.
Believing the chaos of the Otero’s murders was the reason he didn’t feel satisfied, Rader felt that if he could ensure things went according to plan with Kathryn Bright, which he called Project Lights Out, he could satisfy his hellish urges and possibly quit his deadly pastime.
Not only did things not go according to plan, but an unexpected victim also escaped after being shot twice in the head and almost shot with his own .357 Magnum pistol. Besides a lust for killing, there is one other thing Dennis Rader had in abundance, ego.
Six months after Kathryn Bright’s murder, 3 men confessed to her killing and the attempted murder of her brother Kevin. Rader decided that he’d be damned if someone else was going to take credit for his hard work, so he made himself known to the authorities by contacting a local newspaper which began a game of cat and mouse that lasted 30 years.

Dennis Rader a.k.a. BTK
On a cold winter morning in January of 1974, a killer stalked the Otero family of Wichita, Kansas. Little did they know that by the time school let out that day, the lives of four members of the Otero family would be brutally taken and those of the three surviving children would become a never-ending nightmare. Dennis Rader, a married father of two, an Air Force veteran, Park City employee, president of his church council, and boy scout leader, a seemingly normal man and pillar of his community terrorized Wichita Kansas for over 30 years as the serial killer known as BTK which stands for Bind them, Torture them, Kill them.
Come with me as we follow in the steps of Dennis Rader that fateful morning and then those of investigating officers as they worked to identify the monster that tore the young family apart. Justice eluded the surviving members of the Otero family for over 3 decades but thanks to an arrogant mistake on the part of Dennis Rader, and good old-fashioned police work, BTK was finally put where he belongs, behind bars for life.

Let me start by saying that the subject in this week’s episode is innocent until proven guilty and any and all crimes discussed are crimes ALLEGED to have been committed by Perez Deshay Reed. At this point in the investigation and trial process, we are calling him the alleged Crescent Moon Killer until jurisprudence has run its course.
To date, Reed has allegedly killed 7 innocent victims who were simply unlucky enough to cross his path. Some were complete strangers while others were known to use drugs with Reed but regardless of their relationship, they all ended up with bullets from a .40 cal Smith & Wesson pistol in their heads.

An attractive brunette, Charlene Gallego had no trouble luring innocent youths into her car with the promise of work or marijuana. An unquenchable serial killer, Gerald Gallego would later rape and murder them at remote locations instead.
The serial killer couple terrorized the city of Sacramento for two long years before carelessness got them caught. Their California killing spree from 1978 to 1980 left nine women raped before being bludgeoned or shot to death, and one man killed outright. Disturbingly, most of the victims were teens. One was pregnant. Don’t forget to check us out on our website, Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook to stay updated on your favorite maniacs.

He was known as The Railroad Killer because of his penchant for riding the rails around the United States choosing his victims simply based on how close to the railroad tracks their homes were.
For almost 13 years he traveled the country choosing victims at random raping, murdering, and then robbing innocent men and women before either jumping back on the train or stealing their vehicle and dumping it in San Antonio Texas before sneaking back across the border into Mexico until his next murderous expedition into the US. After a short stint on the FBI’s 10 Most Wanted list, Resendiz turned himself into Texas authorities before being convicted of murder and sentenced to death. In 2006, Resendiz paid his debt to society with his life by lethal injection in the Huntsville Unit in Huntsville Texas.
Stay tuned to hear details of his horrific crimes and remember you can listen to all of our episodes on our website at TASKG.org. Now that all of that is out of the way, let’s get to the good stuff.

Unlike other serial killers, Howell had a ritual of, after raping his victims for hours, taking them nude and tied in the back of his van through the McDonald’s drive-thru for what he called “Their last meal” before taking them to a remote area, allowing them to eat, continually raping and then strangling them to death.
He was already in prison serving time for murder when he admitted killing six others to his cellmate and saying that he had slept next to the body of one of his victims in his van he dubbed The Murder Mobile for two weeks. It was this same cellmate who took what Howell told him to the DA’s office and worked out a deal to testify against Howell resulting in The Sick Ripper finally being brought to justice, and sentenced to six life sentences which, in Connecticut, equals 360 years.
