Rita Wilson, a beloved musical force, sits down with Maggie to talk about her ambitious new album, Now & Forever: Duets. The album is an ode to the songs that made her fall in love with music - a collection of classic, timeless songs from the Seventies, arranged as duets. Rita tells Maggie about her move into music after a successful acting career, and what's she's learned about songwriting from some of the masters, like Jackson Browne and Bruce Springsteen. The two discuss what it means to access one’s own creativity, the importance of maintaining a strong sense of self, and why the time is always right to do what you love.

Susan Tedeschi Trucks is a blues guitarist and singer-songwriter who leads the Tedeschi Trucks Band along with Derek Trucks. Susan is known for her guitar playing and her incredible voice, blending R&B, Rock, and Gospel into a soulful combination, which she talks about with Maggie on this new episode of Salute The Songbird. Susan explains why right now is a particularly important time for the female voice to be heard and shares some of the silver linings that came out of the pandemic. And, the two dig into the inspiration for and making of the new Tedeschi Trucks project, I Am The Moon, their most ambitious to date.

In this bonus episode of Salute The Songbird, Maggie chats with indie musician Bre Kennedy backstage at Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, where they were both performing. Maggie and Bre discuss what it feels like to be back and Bonnaroo after 3 consecutive cancellations, as well as back on the road. Bre discusses the introspection she did during and emerging out of the pandemic, and how she got herself back to writing new music. 

Singer-songwriter Bre Kennedy creates music soaked in rich, timeless storytelling with innate pop sensibilities. In 2019, she self-released her Jealous of Birds EP, followed by 2020’s Twenty Something EP, with both title tracks landing on Spotify’s coveted New Music Friday playlist. She released her debut full-length album, Note To Self, in October 2021, which was inspired by her time alone in lockdown and after reading Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way. At the end of 2021, Kennedy signed to Nettwerk Music Group. She is currently working on new music and will join Joy Oladokun on her Spring 2022 tour. She has cemented herself as an artist to watch and one of the brightest voices out of the New Nashville music scene.

Wanda Jackson is celebrated as the Queen of Rockabilly, one of the first women to break into the boys club of rock and roll. Discovered at the age of 14, she wasn’t afraid to step outside of the lines musically, and her original sound mixes up rhythm & blues with country & western. Wanda is Maggie’s guest on this week’s episode, and she tells Maggie about the early days of her career, what it was like to be one of the first women in rock and roll, and shares some of the invaluable lessons she’s learned along the way. 

Wanda Jackson enjoyed a long and successful career singing country and gospel material, but her most ardent fans celebrate her as the Queen of Rockabilly, one of the first and finest female voices rock & roll ever produced. Jackson sang with a passion, fire, and spirit that set her apart from her peers, and tunes like "Hot Dog! That Made Him Mad," "Fujiyama Mama," and "Let's Have a Party" sounded as powerful as anything delivered by her male contemporaries. She enjoyed lasting success when she shifted to country sounds in the 1960s, and her C&W sides would reveal the warmth and thoughtfulness of a major talent. 1960's Rockin' with Wanda! is a superb set of rockabilly performances, 2006's The Very Best of the Country Years is a well-curated sampling of her C&W work, and 2021's Encore found her full of fire at the age of 83.

Singer-songwriter Erin Rae joins Maggie on this episode to talk about her new album Lighten Up, which has been called “a timeless amalgam of classic pop, cosmic country and indie rock”. Erin tells Maggie about the inspiration behind the songs on the album, which capture newfound self awareness and offer commentary on some of the issues we’re currently grappling with as a society. Erin and Maggie discuss the recording process and what inspired the lush, Laurel Canyon-esque sound on the album, as well as her experience growing up in the South and the impact it has had on her career.

Nashville singer/songwriter Erin Rae and her group the Meanwhiles emerged in 2012 with a sound rooted in dreamy indie folk, Americana, and '70s pop/rock. Rae issued her minimalist solo debut, Putting on Airs, in 2018, followed in 2022 by the dynamic, retro-pop, and country-leaning Lighten Up.

Legendary Melissa Etheridge joins Maggie on this episode and things get deep very quickly. Maggie and Melissa talk about loss, navigating through illness, and how critical it is to talk openly about difficult things. Lzzy Hale, front woman and guitarist for the band Halestorm, joins Maggie on the heels of releasing her band's new album, Back From The Dead. Lzzy tells about confronting the anxiety she felt during the pandemic, a theme that threads through the songs on the new record which she describes as her most personal yet. Lzzy and Maggie discuss the power of surprise a woman in music can hold, what it means to be a ‘reformed introvert’, and Lzzy explains the exercises she put herself through in order to overcome stage fright.

Halestorm have elicited an emotional, physical, and spiritual reaction from audiences worldwide since it began as a childhood dream of sister and brother Lzzy and Arejay Hale. The group scored a GRAMMY Award in the category of “Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance” for “Love Bites (So Do I).” They became the first female-fronted band to hit #1 on the Active Rock radio charts, and cumulatively, their songs have racked up north of 1 billion global streams. 

Simultaneously, Lzzy’s voice has resounded across popular culture. She has collaborated with Evanescence, Dee Snider of Twisted Sister, Apocalyptica, Mark Morton of Lamb of God, and The Hu.
