Submit ReviewThe latest episode in our Resilience Unravelled series has now been released, Resilience Unravelled – Christmas 2020. Time to be kind to Yourself.229x300.jpeg" alt="" width="229" height="300">
In this episode, Dr. Russell Thackeray talks about the rather strange circumstances we find ourselves in this year and, how we might launch ourselves into the new world of 2021.
The one thing we can bring out of the whole situation is the importance of resilience. We have seen that people can weather the storm, they can keep going and even thrive but its important to realise that they can t keep going forever. At this time of year we all really need to stop and rejuvenate.
Once we stop we can begin to invest in ourselves. We can begin by being more mindful about the way we engage with ourselves, our partners, friends and family and the time we dedicate to them. We can look at our immune system and the nutrients and vitamins needed to improve our sleep and help us generally feel better.
Above all else, we need to be kind to ourselves. 2020 has been a year like no other and we all deserve some time and some self-care.
In conclusion, we wish you a happy and safe Christmas and look forward to catching up with you again in 2021!

Jen led a double-life for many years. Afraid of the repercussions of admitting she had a problem she was unable to break the cycle of addiction in her life and the physical and mental abuse she endured in an abusive relationship.
After spending decades trying to deal with her addiction and related problems, when someone told her she didn t love herself , she realised she was trying to deal with the symptoms rather than the cause. Jen then needed to face her fears, feelings and emotions and address her anger and negativity so she could reconnect with herself and let go of the past.

In this episode, Dr. Russell Thackeray talks to two guests, John Marx from Denver Colorado and Sean Adams from Dover, New Hampshire. Both have contributed their stories to a new book called Guts, Grit and the Grind from Frank King, Dr Sally Spencer Thomas and Sarah Gaer. In it they have edited a number of men’s personal stories to produce some significant ideas about resilience and how it works.
John is a retired law enforcement officer who served for twenty-three years in both a municipal police department and a county sheriff s office. When he left the service he felt very burnt out and actually considered suicide. John loved his career but feels that people don’t understand the toll it can take. Officers have to respond to horrific situations, crimes and hatred. In John s case, his career took its toll but he was resilient and able to seek support.
Sean Adam graduated with an Associate s degree in Business Management in 2009. After that he worked in a variety of roles before finally following his heart and becoming an inspirational speaker. He had, a pretty normal childhood but within his family there were some mental health issues. When he was 21 he had his first depression and didn’t understand what it was and why it had happened. After four rounds of deep, dark depression he started having suicidal thoughts. Finally, he sought help through a more spiritual path. Through his experiences he came into contact with the authors and the Menswork Project that supports men who find themselves in similar situations.

Bill McPhee is a mental health campaigner who was diagnosed with schizophrenia over 30 years ago. He was hospitalised six times, lived in three group homes and also attempted suicide. After five years going through a deep depression, the right medication and support of family and friends helped him in overcoming schizophrenia.
A mental health diagnosis can be confusing, scary, and frustrating. Although Bill’s mother had a mental illness, it didn t make his own diagnosis any easier. That s why he started travelling across North America to share his story and try to improve the lives of those affected by mental illness.
In this episode Bill talks about what being diagnosed with Schizophrenia means. He also discusses the difference between positive and negative symptoms and the three components of the illness. Another aspect in overcoming schizophrenia is the importance of developing a social circle and interests to support the correct medication.
As a young adult, Bill had no idea how to come to terms with having a mental illness. Three decades later he has come to realise that his mental illness is a blessing, not a curse.

Holt-300x239.png" alt="" width="226" height="180">Geoff Holt describes himself as a seafaring adventurer, but that’s not the full story. Geoff faced enormous adversity early on in his life, and had to build huge resilience to get back to living his life.
By the time Geoff was eighteen, he had sailed across the Atlantic Ocean three times, completed several solo voyages and sailed over 30,000 nautical miles. Then, his life changed completely when he broke his neck after diving into the Caribbean Sea.
Geoff was paralysed from the chest down but after a year in hospital he retrained in database management. He went on to work for Deloitte, becoming Head of Marketing and Business Development for the South West. He had always wanted to get back to sailing though and achieved this in 1991. In 1992 he sailed the 60 miles around the Isle of Wight. He followed this by sailing solo around Great Britain in 2007, taking 110 days to complete the journey. He published his autobiography Walking on Water in 2008 and in January 2010, became the first quadriplegic to sail the Atlantic unassisted.
Sailing was Geoff s life before his accident but he had the resilience to rebuild his life. Sailing became a huge part of it again. Now, his aim is to get as many disabled people as possible out on the water. He set up the Wetwheels Foundation in 2011 which gives disabled people the opportunity to access the sea as a shared experience with their family in a safe but rewarding way.
