• Thought Spotify had stopped spending the big bucks on content? Think again: the company is making offers, reaching seven figures, to “encourage video-oriented creators to distribute their shows to the platform in addition to YouTube”, according to a new scoop from Bloomberg’s Ashley Carman. She points out that when you upload videos to the service, it pulls audio from the video file, rather than the RSS feed (thus cutting out dynamically inserted ads).
• The BBC is doubling-down on its podcast windowing strategy. It’s to make more of its podcast episodes available exclusively first behind a registration wall on the BBC Sounds app - usually for a week (seven days) or a month (28 days) - and only then publish on open RSS. The BBC claims a successful 18-month trial, which it says attracted 218,000 listeners to use BBC Sounds (4.3% of the total audience); but it also admits that the majority of listeners still use open RSS to listen. The BBC was the first UK broadcaster to embrace podcasting, in November 2004, but has since retreated from the open internet.
  • The BBC is funded by a mandatory TV licence of £169.50 (US$220) a year, and by advertising and programme sales outside the UK. Recently unveiled plans to include advertising on podcasts within the UK have been heavily criticised.
• Google’s NotebookLM now “lets you listen to a conversation about your sources” - taking a full set of articles and turning it into a “lively conversation”, or as we might call it, a podcast. We asked it to take our popular article explaining podcast stats. And the 7-minute result is really quite impressive. Worth a listen.
  • It totally hallucinates the difference between a download and a listen - but we like its description of a download being “people who RSVP to a party saying they’ll be there”, but a listen being “people who actually turn up”.

• Podcast platform Podeo has put its podcasts into taxis across the UAE, reaching millions of monthly passengers in the country - just in time for Dubai PodFest on Sep 30.

• A new podcast launched yesterday aims to challenge stereotypes of Asian and Asian Americans. Aconic is hosted by Soon Yu, and will talk to guests who have seen success including the roadblocks, misfires, frustrations, and failures they faced and their seminal moments of vulnerability, hope, perseverance, and achievement.
• The Stop & Talk podcast is celebrating its first anniversary. Hosted by Grant Oliphant of the Prebys Foundation, the show dives deep into the themes of purpose and opportunity, guided by the insights of leaders in the arts and culture, sports, philanthropy, finance, and innovation fields.

• Customers may be taking flight after live streaming and recording tool Streamyard increased its monthly pricing by 80%, and will automatically apply that price to existing subscribers next month. Pricing has moved from pricing-240621.png">$25 to pricing-240911.png">$44.99 a month; the company removed its pricing from its public website in July.

• LAist, the radio station and podcast producer in Los Angeles, has been awarded a grant of $2.4mn for local journalism. It’s part of $15mn of funding from the LA Local News Initiative.
• In Canada, Rogers Sports & Media is now selling Wondery shows. The network was with DAX/Global.
• The Australian Podcast Ranker for August was released. Total downloads for the top 200 shows in August were down -3.5%; August has 4.5% fewer weekdays, though, making it difficult to compare calendar months. The highest new entry was Wondery’s Hysterical at #73.

Moves and hires

• Podcast platform Podspace has hired three industry veterans in Sweden and Finland, eyeing expansion. An original co-founder of Acast and former Nordic CEO of Spotify, Öjje Holt, is Director of Growth; Johan Leijonhufvud is Senior Client Manager and Eeva Ronkainen is the company’s new Country Manager for Finland: both worked for Spotify.

• Adalyst Media has added Under the Influence with Jo Piazza to its slate. The show looks at the current landscape of social media influencers and how it particularly affects women — both the ones who create the content, and the ones who consume it every day.
• Panic World drops today from the writer of the Garbage Day newsletter, Ryan Broderick. The show investigates how a trend that started in a dark corner of the internet eventually made its way out into the real world. The first episode looks at Sleepytime, a "cooking chicken with sleeping pills" meme from TikTok.
• Channels with Peter Kafka is new from Vox Media. It's the relaunch of Peter Kafka's technology show, formerly known as Recode Media. The show will feature weekly conversations with industry leaders, upstarts, and observers, about the areas where media, entertainment and technology collide.
• Let’s Begin with Jenna Arnold is new this week. From early learning company Begin, the show "delivers authentic conversations, expert guidance, and realistic strategies to support parents in the complex journey of raising children and growing alongside them in today's world.".
• Immigration even made it into the US Presidential Debate last night; so it's helpful that Movement launched earlier this year, telling stories of global migration through music. Today's episode celebrates Enkutatash, Ethiopian New Year, which is today - a day of special significance for the podcast's host, Meklit Hadero, an Ethiopian-born American singer and songwriter based in San Francisco.
• Rugby Rodeo is new today from Spotify's The Ringer, looking at the world of women's rugby. It's hosted by England teammates Jess Breach and Ellie Kildunne. The Women's Rugby World Cup will be held in a year's time in England, so it's an ideal time to focus on the sport.
• The Jam with Jonathan Shank is back for a second season. The Osiris Media show, hosted by music industry leader and innovator Jonathan Shank, explores the evolution of music through personal conversations and journeys with artists, industry icons, legendary bands, and tastemakers.

• The release of iOS 18 has been announced for next week. New in Apple Podcasts - hold down the playback bar to scrub forward and back, and you’ll notice that you can now see chapter points and chapter titles. More reason to add chapters to your shows before next week when everyone will see them: many podcast hosts have direct support for them, or you can use tools like Forecast or Hindenburg to add them.
  • In the many announcements Apple made yesterday - all the iPhone 16 range will support Apple Intelligence; the release of AirPods 4 which now have a model with noise cancellation; AirPods Max get a new colour-set and USB-C charging; and AirPods Pro 2 will include - later this year - a hearing test and a way for them to act as clinical hearing aids.
• Steve Goldstein looks back at his “View from the Top” session at Podcast Movement, and gives us some key takeaways from folks like Ross Adams at Acast and Elsie Escobar at Libsyn.

• The Australian podcast publisher for women Mamamia has announced Butter, a new strand of content that is surprisingly underrepresented in podcasting. We can’t easily tell you what it is without getting this newsletter blocked by corporate email systems, though - but we can on the website.
• Podtrac released its rankers for August. The Ezra Klein Show was a new entry for the biggest podcasts; NPR has jumped from #6 to #4 in the publisher ranker. The list includes participating publishers only.
• Podcast host RSS.com has released new podcast analytics. The new analytics are more accurate, offer geo-location down to episode level, and show trends, too.
• Buzzsprout’s iOS app now has lock screen widgets - to put today’s download numbers, or your progress towards the next milestone, on your iPhone’s lock screen.
• Headliner has added a new tool to help you transcribe, caption and clip YouTube videos.
• Podcastpage has added paid membership features to its podcast website builder. The tool is built-in; and is charged based on the number of members you have.

• Steve Lehman has been named Vice Chairman of PodcastOne. Among other things, he’ll be working on mergers and acquisitions efforts, overall strategy, and increasing shareholder value. He was founder, Chairman and CEO of broadcaster Premiere Networks, which is now part of iHeart.

It’s run by talent management company The Partnership Group, and aims to support the next generation of creators who have the potential to become full time podcasters - offering a year’s support and resources.
• Rhapsody Voices has partnered with KSL Podcasts to release Unsolved Histories, a unique always-on series that explores unsolved mysteries of American history. KSL Podcasts is well-known as the publisher of shows like Cold, The Letter and Ransom.
• Sport Social has announced an exclusive partnership with football podcast Undr The Cosh. The show is regularly in the top ten in the country.
• We were excited to see The News Quiz, part of the BBC’s Friday Night Comedy podcast, publishing immediately after transmission at the end of last week. The show had been subject to a 30-day windowing trial for the past 18 months, with the newest episodes only available on BBC Sounds. The bad news: that was a mistake, we’re told. The good news: the show now only has a 7-day window.

The Tech Stuff

• IPv6 is the future of how our phones and devices connect to the internet - but, says Podscribe’s Pete Birsinger, IPv6 has a massive effect on attribution technologies: reducing results by up to around 50% for some campaigns. The company can correctly model for the differences, he says.
• In the Podcasting 2.0 podcast this week, Dave Jones briefly discusses video podcasting, and how the alternateEnclosure and HLS streams are really the best way to support them. HLS streams can be of variable bitrate to deal with network conditions and are significantly cheaper for podcast hosting companies than serving one big 4K video file.
• Podnews podcast pages now support full credits, as seen here, using the podcast:person tag. The list uses the Podcast Taxonomy project’s job roles.
  • We’ve also significantly highlighted our support of one of the most widely-supported features, the podcast:funding tag, as seen here.
  • We’ve also changed our description of “value4value” to “streaming payments”. Value 4 Value is not just streaming sats, and the concept doesn’t require any technology stack.
