Understand your world better by looking through the eyes of others. Immerse yourself in these short, personal, and powerful stories.
Season 8: Role Models This season we celebrate role models, as we hear how meeting someone influential can change the course of your whole life… mostly for the better, but sometimes a negative role model can have an equally powerful impact.
See what we’ve covered in previous seasons below...
Season 1: Our Voices in the NHS In this season we celebrate all the wonderful people working in the NHS. We start with stories from people who have emigrated to the UK from around the world, and hear their struggles in doing so, and the diversity they bring. Then we open up the season to anyone working within the NHS to hear how the often hidden work they do benefits us all. The common thread is that human connection is key to keeping going!
Season 2: Our Voices at the Olympics In this season we hear the stories of some past, present, and future Olympians. We hear what it takes to make it at that level and the rewards of overcome adversity.
Season 3: Our Voices Through Lockdown In this season we hear impassioned stories from people who have been affected by the Covid-19 lockdowns. Some are uplifting stories of togetherness, and in others we hear the negative impact lockdowns have had on an individuals mental health. But each story has one thing in common. Change.
Season 4: Our Voices on Climate Change In this season we hear from the activists and climate science communicators, fighting to save our planet.
Season 5: Our Voices on Racism in the UK In this season we hear the intimate and at times harrowing stories of racism from people living in the UK. This terrible scourge of society should be a thing of the past, but unfortunately, millions of people are subjected to bigoted, narrow minded, and down right harmful racist views and actions every single day.
Season 6: Celebrating Women in the UK This season we celebrate Women's History Month by the highlighting the contributions of a group of incredible females. They come from different backgrounds and have diverse talents, abilities, and even approaches to life. But each one of them is an inspiration and a role model in their own right.
Season 7: On Living With Disability This season we find out what it's like to live with a disability. What are the challenges? How far have we come? and how far still to go to achieve a level of equality that we can be proud of?
Just a heads-up. Not all, but some episodes contain details of racist or sexist abuse, violence, and mentions of suicide. Take care while you’re listening.
The opinions and views in this podcast are the individuals own. They are given the platform to speak how they feel having been through their unique experiences.

7. Making it Through the Education System with Face Blindness and Autism, Ben Foulsham
00:21:59
Ben, a 17-year-old student with autism is preparing for his A-levels, and excited about the prospect of going to university. He's fortunate to have a big sister, Ruth, who has been giving him advice on how best to prepare for the next potential phase of his life.
“The best way for me to describe it is it means I think differently, and my brain is wired completely differently to anyone else. It's a different way of living, a different way of seeing the world. And the reason why it's a disability is because the world is not built for autistic people. It's built for non autistic people.”

6. Achieving Independence in a Wheelchair with Ric Cassell
00:18:39
Since contracting polio as a child, Ric has been in a wheelchair for most of his life; however, he has proven himself to be particularly resourceful. With his personal mantra of “there’s no such word as can’t”, Ric has found a way to do things that many would assume would be beyond his ability; including, raising his children as a stay at home dad and competing in the London Marathon.
“Having a disability is just an impairment. It's not the end of your life or anything. It's just something that needs to be addressed. And far more of what makes you disabled is the social environment around you, rather than what you can't do.”

00:19:42

More recently she has been able to make her voice heard and she plans to use it to fight for a more empathetic and inclusive society.
“I sat there, and I just cried. I said, I am just so proud of myself, that I have been able to ignore my inner saboteur and my inner demons and that I've got myself to a position where I can be interviewed for a job role that I am desperately wanting to do, and a job where people are gonna listen to me. And I'm going to be able to impact other people's lives and make a difference and make a change.”

4. Coming to Terms with Sight Loss, Seema Flower
00:19:38
As a child, Seema was a big fan of cars. Her father was a car mechanic and she would roam around his garage and pretend to drive the cars. “My passion was being able to drive. I always thought, when I grew up, I'll have a car, I'll be able to stop at the petrol station, I’ll go and stop and get some shopping. So I used to roleplay all this sort of stuff when I was about 6, 7, 8.”
“The thing is, when you have a disability, you have so many restrictions already. When COVID-19 hit, basically, it made life much more difficult for people who are vulnerable and disabled. It exacerbated the situation of people like myself… I was sick and tired.. I just wanted to have my own freedom back.”
