Submit ReviewTV shows like Sex & The City and Friends would have us believe that we all need a tight-knit group of best friends who will always be there for us. But in reality making, and keeping friends, can get harder and harder as life gets in the way.
That’s why friends Rebecca Sparrow, Lise Carlaw and Sarah Wills created The Friendship Project; a six-part audio series that dives deep into what makes adult friendships work and the factors which make them unravel. And that’s what they sit down and unpack with Mia Freedman on this episode of No Filter.

Mary Coustas has graced Australian screens as 'Effie Stephanides' for over 30 years; the big haired, stand out character from Acropolis Now.
But behind the scenes, Mary is an open book. And when it comes to speaking about her experience as a later in life mother, growing up as a first generation Greek-Australian, and the pain of losing her father, she's unflinchingly raw and honest.
This is Mary Coustas' story.

It was after a dinner with friends one night, that journalist and writer Kate Legge’s husband pulled her into their garage to confess; he’d been having an affair. And as she later found out, it wasn’t the first time.
Being a journalist, Kate ended up doing some digging, and what she found out about his family history was shocking…and also potentially explained why he was unfaithful.

If you believe certain tabloids and websites, you'd be forgiven for thinking Pip Edwards is simply a socialite, an influencer, and the ex-girlfriend of a famous cricketer. But in reality, she's a successful businesswoman, a fashion mogul, and a single mum to her 16 year old son. And she's ready to talk.
In this conversation, she opens up about her business P.E Nation, life as a single mum and reality of co-parenting, and why she hasn't felt 'safe' in any of her relationships so far.

Listen to the rest of Mia's conversation with Nikki here...
A few weeks ago, an article in The Australian entitled ‘Sex? I’m Over It’ infiltrated the group chats of Gen X women all across the country.
In it, author Nikki Gemmell put into words a feeling that so many other women have felt at some point in their lives: I’m tired, I don’t want to have sex, and I just want my own bed.
20 years and 4 kids on from her groundbreaking erotic novel The Bride Stripped Bare, Nikki has some different thoughts about sex. Mainly, that she’s over it. And she just wants a good night’s sleep.
Nikki is honest, hilarious, and truly has no filter. This is her story.

When Australian Idol first graced our television screens 20 years ago, audiences fell in love with a 21 year old 'Millsy', a larrikin with blonde highlights, an eye brow piercing and an incredible voice.
In his personal life, however, Rob Mills relationship with alcohol, anxiety and the repression of his sexuality meant that life wasn't always smooth sailing.
But these days, Rob is an open book. He has a flourishing career in musical theatre, and has written a book about his life and what it means to be a man in Australia. From his problematic first film clip, to the moment that led him to throw a punch at someone (twice), and now finding love, Rob is unflinchingly honest and open.

Elfy Scott was thirteen when she came across some medication with her mum’s name on it. After Googling the name of it and seeing the words schizophrenia and psychosis, the ‘voices’ her mum often complained about hearing started to make sense.
Schizophrenia is not uncommon, but often completely misunderstood by the general public. Elfy is a journalist who has written a book about this topic, The One Thing We’ve Never Spoken About, and joins Mia on No Filter to discuss her own experiences with her mum’s schizophrenia, and whether the stigma around complex mental health issues can hold people back, even more so than the disorder itself.

The story of Jessica Watson's unbelievable solo sailing trip around the world at age 16 has been etched into Australian lore. More than a decade after that achievement, the details of how she survived 210 days of severe storms, isolation and even her boat flipping upside down 15 feet underwater, will astound you. She still holds the record for youngest person to sail solo, nonstop and unassisted around the world. No mean feat.
But that trip wasn't the only storm the now 29-year-old has had to endure. Speaking to Claire Murphy, Jessica reveals the challenge of working on her newly released Netflix biopic True Spirit, while her life was falling apart.

There is something that happens to a lot of women between their mid twenties and early forties. It's a feeling, the anxiety that sets in as you make potentially the biggest decision of your life; whether or not to have a child.
Writer and podcaster Nell Frizzell came up with a name for this period: The Panic Years. She explored this concept in her book of the same name, and joins guest host Jessie Stephens to talk about how she made up her mind, what happened when her partner didn't agree, and the biological inequality of it all.

This week on No Filter, we’re proud to welcome back Narelda Jacobs as our guest host.
In October 2022, hundreds of people were gathering across the country to attend vigils for Cassius Turvey, the 15-year-old Noongar Yamatji boy who was tragically murdered last year. Along with Cassius’ mother, the woman who organised those vigils across the country was Megan Krakouer.
Megan is the director of the National Suicide Prevention & Trauma Recovery Project. She is also the first person to answer the phone and show up in her community when a First Nations individual needs help or support, 24 hours a day.
On this episode of No Filter, Megan and Narelda have a frank conversation about how Australia is experiencing another stolen generation.
Please note that this conversation contains mentions of suicide. Please call Lifeline on 13 11 14 if you need support.

You might have heard the phrase ‘black out drunk’ before, which might evoke images of someone asleep or passed out. But that’s not what it is. Blacking out is when you’re conscious and walking around, but can’t remember anything afterwards. And that’s what has happened to journalist Sarah Hepola, dozens of times.
Drinking became a normal part of her life, like a lot of people; a social lubricant, a way to meet new people, and a party starter. But as the nights got more and more hazy, she realised she needed to make a change...

You can watch Mia and Trinny's interview in full here.
When Trinny Woodall stepped into the Mamamia office for this special live No Filter interview, the atmosphere was electric. Because Trinny has an energy about her that is exciting, unafraid, and very fun.
She joined Mia on the show a few years ago to speak about her life and career up to that point, but this time delved into the nitty gritty of owning her incredibly successful lady start-up, Trinny London. They chat about what it’s like launching a beauty brand, how she manages her time and staff, and why her 50s were her most interesting decade yet.

Listen to the rest of Mia's conversation with Emma Carey here.
When Emma Carey was in Switzerland on a once in a lifetime holiday, she decided to go skydiving. But jumping out of that helicopter changed her life forever, because as the ground came up to meet her, her parachute didn’t go off. And Emma hit the ground.
But Emma’s story is about so much more than this moment. And her insights on disability, dating, and why she doesn’t want to be called an inspiration, are riveting.
This is Emma Carey’s story, the girl who fell from the sky.

Until she was 40, every aspect of Julia Haart’s life, was tightly, tightly controlled. What she ate, what she thought, what she wore, and what she was allowed to do in a day. Julia was part of an ultra-Orthodox community in New York – a type of extreme form of religion called Haredi Judaism. But, after having 4 kids, Julia decided to escape.
Before we jump in, just a quick note - and some context.
It’s important to bear in mind that these are Julia’s personal experiences. They do not speak for the many and varied experiences of all Jewish women - Orthodox, Ultra-Orthodox, or otherwise.
And on those terms - ‘Orthodox’ and ‘Ultra-Orthodox’ - while we use them interchangeably, it’s important to note that actually, Julia’s experience is within an Ultra-Orthodox community of Monsey, New York. This is just one niche sect in a spectrum of many, each with varying customs.
This is part one of her story…

Antoinette Lattouf was only a teenager when her father gave her some advice. Listen to the second half of Mia's conversation with Abi here.
The last few years of Abi Morgan’s life would make an incredible TV show, although you might not believe it because of the plot twists. One of those twists is that Abi herself is an Emmy-award-winning screenwriter of movies like Iron Lady, with Meryl Streep, and TV dramas like The Split.
But nothing could have prepared her for the cascading series of events that began on a very ordinary day. The crescendo of this story is that, after waking up from a coma, Abi's partner of 20 years didn't recognise her. And only her...

Find part two of Mia's conversation with Julia here.

Three years ago, Tracey was named the NSW Premier’s Woman of the Year, accepted the Sydney Peace Prize alongside Tarana Burke for the Me Too Movement, and won the national award for Excellence in Women’s Leadership through Women and Leadership Australia. Today, most of Tracey’s days are spent at doctors appointments.
She’s a multiple Walkley Award winning author and broadcaster who has anchored programs all over Australia. We’re sure she didn’t imagine that in July 2022 she’d be on No Filter, speaking about how she became one of the unlucky ones: a sufferer of the dreaded Long Covid.
Long Covid means your symptoms have persisted for longer than 12 weeks after initial infection. What’s interesting though, is that there might be new symptoms. You could feel like you’re actually getting sick with something else entirely. And for some, their condition continues to deteriorate.
Tracey has been sick for 204 days. And here’s what she thinks you should know.

Mamamia started as a blog and evolved into an empire. And it can be all traced back to the moment Mia Freedman was sitting on her living room floor cutting bits and pieces out of magazines to make the Mamamia logo. So how did she go from a blog of one to an office of over 100 people?

You might know Kelly McCarren as one of the hosts of Mamamia’s You Beauty podcast. She’s well known for being candid and vulnerable about her life on her social media accounts, speaking about her boob job, her nose job, hating her wedding, gender disappointment in pregnancy and her mental health. But when Kelly started sharing the toll of what being a new mother really looks and feels like on her social media, she was universally applauded. She made other parents feel seen.
So, Mia asked her on the podcast to talk about the things we don’t often talk about - the moments in life where we don’t think any other woman has been before, and how Kelly is sharing the realities of being a new parent. Both the overflow of love and the overwhelm of trying to figure out what to do with a screaming baby.

Tom Tilley was just 10 years old when he began speaking in tongues. Best known for hosting Hack on triple j, interviewing everyone from prime ministers to pop stars, Tom Tilley grew up in a strict Pentecostal family where alcohol, ‘fornication’ outside of marriage, and even dancing, were forbidden.
On this episode of No Filter, Tom speaks candidly about his childhood, his life-changing decision to quit the faith at age 21, and other honest stories from his new memoir, Speaking in Tongues.

Want more with Kate? Find her extra No Filter episode here.
When Melissa Caddick went missing in November 2020, Kate McClymont knew that there was more to the story than what was being reported. Kate, the Chief Investigative Reporter at the Sydney Morning Herald, has spent her career breaking news about fraud, corruption, and more. So what looked like a fairly standard missing person’s case to the average person, looked like a lot more to Kate McClymont.
And when a human foot washed up on a South Coast beach months later? A whole other line of investigation opened into what actually happened to Melissa Caddick.
Kate is a co-host of a podcast called Liar Liar that’s all about this case, and in her signature forensic style, she’s uncovered a bunch of disturbing, astonishing information about the life and disappearance of a wealthy woman who wasn’t at all what she seemed.

Australia first fell in love with Reggie Bird in 2003, when she became the third person in Australia to win Big Brother. The whole country knew Reggie’s name. They knew she was married, ran a fish and chip shop in Tasmania, and wore her heart on her sleeve. And that’s why we loved her.
But a lot has changed in Reggie’s life since 2003. And she’s continued to walk an unexpectedly fine line between public and private life over the past two decades…She’s been so famous she couldn’t work, then she’s HAD to work after getting scammed out of $40,000. She’s been an air hostess, a mum, lost her eyesight, gotten divorced, and now she’s chosen to go BACK on Big Brother. She joins Mia to talk about it all…

Australia has woken up to a new Prime Minister: Anthony Albanese. So who is he? What's his story? At the end of 2021, Anthony Albanese sat down with Mia Freedman for this episode of No Filter. So we thought we'd pop it back in your feed so you could get to know our new PM...
As a teen, Anthony Albanese sat down with his mother for dinner. It was just the two of them, as it always had been. Albanese’s father had died in a car crash before he was born. Or at least, that’s what he thought until that dinner. His mother told him his father was most likely alive and living in Italy...
In this episode of No Filter, Anthony Albanese joins Mia to talk about his very unique childhood and the surprising way his search for his father turned out.

Growing up, Renee McBryde thought she had an ordinary life. She was raised by a young, single mum in Sydney, spent time with her grandparents every weekend, and her dad wasn’t around - in fact she’d never met him but they spoke on the phone every week.
It was during one of those phone calls, on an ordinary Saturday night, that Renee would suddenly realise that her family was not in fact ordinary. They had secrets that spanned generations and trapped Renee, and her family in a cycle of trauma.
This is her story…

Stephenie Rodriguez was at a work conference in Nigeria in 2020 when she got bitten by a mosquito.
At the time, she didn’t think anything of it, but two weeks later she collapsed on the floor of an airport. And 24 hours after that, the single mother and digital entrepreneur was in a coma in a Boston hospital with a 2% chance of surviving.
Steph has been through more in the past two years than most of us. And what you’ve read so far is only the start of her story… where she’s at now, is a whole other level of remarkable.

It’s a confusing time to work out what a woman over 40 is supposed to look like. Last week, two magazine covers were released. One with 56yo former supermodel Linda Evangelista showing how she’d been ‘disfigured’ by cosmetic surgery that was meant to make her look younger and thinner and one with Oscar nominee Nicole Kidman dressed like a schoolgirl. No wonder we’re confused. You can see both covers magazine-covers-two-very-different-messages-for-50-plus-women-20220223-p59z1f.html">here.
Which is why this week on No Filter, Mia is joined by former Editor-in-Chief of Vogue Australia and author, Kirstie Clements, to talk about the perplexing business of women getting older.
And just a note, this is not a conversation about women looking ‘good’ for their age - and it’s not about shaming women. It’s a respectful conversation where two women in their 50s try to make sense of the mixed messages we’re getting from popular culture…
THE END BITS:

Sometimes really bad things happen in families. Things that aren’t spoken about. Things that are covered up to protect adults….at the expense of children. But sometimes, decades later, when those children grow up, they make the courageous, difficult decision to speak up, even if there is enormous pressure from within their family and community to stay silent. Virginia Tapscott is one of those children who grew up and spoke out, after the death of her beloved older sister Ally Tapp who was abused by not just one trusted male relative but two.
This is the story of Virginia and Ally.
A heads up, this podcast deals with sexual assault and child sexual assault. If you need help please call 1800 Respect.

Want more from Johann? Listen to the rest of his chat with Mia here
Does your brain feel a bit like a marshmallow lately? Do you find it hard to concentrate? Do you pick up your phone only to find that an hour has passed and you’re down some obscure rabbit hole that’s landed you on the Facebook page of your high school English teacher and you’ve forgotten why you picked up your phone in the first place? You're not alone.
It has been SO HARD to focus lately. So hard to hold our attention for longer than a goldfish can. Is it COVID? Is it technology? And….is it our fault?
If you ask Mia's guest today, Johann Hari, author of the best-selling book Stolen Focus - he’ll tell you it’s not. Because we haven’t lost our focus… it’s not like something we misplaced. Our focus has deliberately been stolen from us.
And this is how to get it back.
THE END BITS:
With thanks to Johann Hari. Stolen Focus is available now at all good book stores.

This week on No Filter, we’re proud to introduce Narelda Jacobs as our guest host.
Rhoda Roberts is one of the most influential Australians there is. She’s a nurse, a journalist, broadcaster, actor, producer, writer, art advisor, and artistic director. And she’s responsible for a lot of huge cultural moments in this country. From the Awakening ceremony during the opening ceremony of the Sydney Olympics to coining the phrase welcome to country.
But she’s also been through a lot. In 1972 she watched her father Frank Roberts Jnr be introduced by Gough Whitlam at the Tent Embassy on the grounds of Old Parliament House in Canberra, to talk about land rights. In 1979, while training to be a nurse in Lismore, the matron at the hospital told her to go home, because she was just going to get pregnant like the other girls. Of course, Aunty Rhoda persisted. In 1999, Aunty Rhoda and her family went through the most heinous of tragedies when her twin sister Lois was found murdered. A crime that is still to this day unsolved.
On this episode of No Filter Rhoda sits down with guest host Narelda Jacobs to talk about her life…

If you looked at Madeleine West’s Instagram 5 years ago, you would have easily presumed that she had the perfect life. She lived in a fabulous house in Melbourne with her partner, a famous celebrity chef, and her six children.
She was often on our TV Screens in Neighbours, Satisfaction, and Playing For Keeps. She practiced Yoga and drank green smoothies. And then one day, Madeleine decided to blow it all up.
In fact, you might say she hit restart.

Just a heads-up, this interview touches on the themes of suicide. If you need help call Lifeline on 13 11 14.
Matthew Reilly lives a very strange life. He’s the first one to admit it. He spends most of it sitting in a nice room in a nice house creating elaborate action-adventure worlds that don’t exist…and he’s paid millions of dollars to do it. In 1996 at the age of 22, Matthew got a bank loan, self-published 1,000 copies of his book, Contest, and convinced bookshops around Sydney to stock it.
25 years later, Matthew has now written 19 novels and sold more than 8 million copies worldwide. If only his personal life had been similarly golden. It hasn’t.
On this episode of No Filter, he joins me to talk about life and love after loss.

It was February 2016, and Australian Basketball legend Lauren Jackson was looking down the barrel of her fifth Olympic Games in Rio.
Lauren was already an icon as one of the best basketballers in the world. Having played professionally in America for most of her career. She’d injured her knee in 2015 - a common job hazard for professional basketballers - and was in recovery. But she was hopeful she’d get to play at one more Olympics.
And then, Lauren did something millions of women do every day. She went and got her legs waxed, and it was the catalyst that forced her into retirement at 34...

Just a heads-up - this episode covers the difficult and emotional topic of miscarriage.
If you’re a fan of the Aussie TV show Neighbours, then you’ve definitely seen Sharon Johal on your television. She played the character of Dipi Rebecchi from 2017 to early in 2021. Landing this gig as a series regular was groundbreaking - she was the first Indian Punjabi woman in a mainstream television role.
But her experience on Neighbours? Well, it was tougher than she could have possibly imagined. In 2020, there was COVID, she was stuck in a toxic work environment and...she fell unexpectedly pregnant, and then she lost her baby. This is a story about grit, determination and authenticity. You’re going to love getting to know Sharon Johal.

And just a note, Anthony Albanese may be the Leader of the Opposition. But this episode of No Filter is not about politics.

Rebecca Woolf has done a lot of things before everyone else. She became a mum at 23 years old, had four children by the time she was 29 including twins. And then became a widow at just 37, when her husband Hal died pretty suddenly. But before he got sick unexpectedly, she was planning to leave him…
Rebecca speaks about the hard stuff like exploring her sexuality and open relationships, stuff that we often don’t allow ourselves to talk about, or even to feel.

For two years, Phoebe Burgess remained pretty silent when it came to the breakup of her marriage. And then her ex-husband went on a reality TV show called SAS Australia. She’d wake up in the morning and read messages from women on Instagram saying they were thinking of her. And that’s when she realised the danger of someone's story being told by someone else. So, she decided to take the power back. And that’s why she’s joining Mia in the studio today for part two of our conversation...

If you’d looked at Phoebe Burgess’ Instagram account three or four years ago, chances are you would have seen a happy family smiling back at you. Phoebe; a former magazine journalist, her husband, Sam Burgess; the famous NRL player, and a growing baby bump going on family holidays to Hamilton Island, Fiji, and coastal NSW. They had a beautiful home. Fame. Wealth. It was the ultimate highlight reel. But only a few people knew that those family holidays weren’t exactly what they appeared to be. A tiny handful of individuals in and around the football club were the only ones privy to all the things that had to be kept quiet. But now, Phoebe Burgess has found her voice, and is ready to talk...

Over the past two decades, Kate Langbroek's life has changed dramatically. Some of that change has been because of choices she’s made - like having 4 kids in 5 years, or deciding to quit her high profile, massively well-paid radio job alongside Dave “Hughesy” Hughes to move to Italy...in the midst of a global pandemic.
But other things that have thrown her world into chaos have been things that blindsided her. On this episode of No Filter, she opens up about all of it.

Mia Freedman often says friendships are forged in the fire of shitty times as well as great ones. And that is the truth of the very strong, sometimes very rude bond between Leigh Sales and Annabel Crabb. They are two of the most admired, respected, successful, and talented journalists in Australia. They’ve won awards, written best-selling books, birthed babies, a hit podcast, a community of Chatters, and now a new book, called Well Hello.
They’ve both been on No Filter a number of times separately to talk about various projects but today, Mia wanted them to speak candidly about each other. From the misconceptions of Leigh to Annabel’s hair.
THE END BITS:

Amani has since written a book about her experience called The Mother Wound, and she joins Mia now to share her powerful story.

Emma Watkins grew up wanting to be a ballerina. She’d watched dancers all her life on the TV, and on The Wiggles. But then she got injured, and that dream? Well, it went out the window.
So she went in search of something more, and little did she know that something more would see her become the first female Wiggle.
On this episode of No Filter we talk about everything from the backlash she faced at the announcement, her Endometriosis diagnosis, and what it’s really like to be one of the most recognised children’s entertainers in the country, and in fact...the world.

Caroline de Costa started studying medicine at Sydney University when she was just 16 years old, after a few years off and a baby in between, Caroline finished her medical degree in 1973. She decided she wanted to major in Obstetrics and Gynecology, but she wasn’t allowed. They wouldn’t let her…because it wasn’t a woman’s field. (Yes, that happened)
So Caroline packed her bags, her family, and headed for Ireland where they would train her. Seven children, 15 books and almost 50 years later, Caroline is one of Australia’s biggest medical trailblazers, and the first woman ever to become a professor of obstetrics and gynecology in Australia. She has a LOT of stories about birth and women’s bodies and she shares them on this episode of No Filter...

It was an ordinary day on the 30th of July, 1997 in Thredbo, but at 11:35pm the earth moved. Lives were changed and lost in just a few minutes. The Thredbo Landslide happened fast. It hit two ski lodges where 19 people were sleeping. It destroyed the buildings, ripped them off their foundations, and plunged those inside under tonnes of debris and concrete.
For the first two days, we were told that there would be no survivors. However, on the morning of the third day, 66 hours after he was buried, Stuart Diver was found alive. He was the lone survivor of one of the most famous tragedies in Australia’s history.
