Submit ReviewDavid was one of the first person’s I thought of when I thought about making Man V/s Machine because I wanted someone to talk about the weird political climate that was happening online and he didn’t disappoint. In this interview we talk about how we started on the internet since we’re about similar ages, as well as how gender plays into how we think about politics, as well as thinking about how we read the news.

There’s a common sentence you hear that the online world is not real. That whatever happens in social media is not real. This is factually incorrect, everything that happens online is part of the world world whether we like it or not. and if we take his statement at face value, this can be dangerous.
Our social lives revolve around the technology we have, s well as our business, our careers, our families, and the shape of what we think about the world. All of it revolves around what happens online. This can lead to healthy communities or dangerous ideas.
There’s a blend here. A distortion.
David Moscrop, political commentator and writer of the book "Too Dumb for Democracy" is here to help us through the muck.

On this Bonus Episode of Modern Manhood, we give you the full interview with Tyler Prochnow who is an Assistant Professor at Texas A&M University.
He was my main voice in the Group Chat episode and we spoke a bit to his research in the online gaming and chat space.
His research interests include the social dynamics which drive health behavior. Tyler has also done work with local Boys & Girls Clubs, health districts, gaming communities, and other research projects to better understand how social connections impact physical activity and mental health.
In this episode you’ll hear us talk about how group chats can become healthy or toxic, and also dissect even a group chat like mine with my friends.

When we think of an all male group chat, does your mind wander to places of toxicity, misogyny and overall bad behavior? or does it go to a place where people find a community, where guys lift each other up, and police their language?
Well it can be both.
Let’s explore how the group chat is today’s digital third place, and how men and boys have found toxicity or a healthy community in them

Today on Modern Manhood, a bonus episode for you with Iliana Depounti who is a researcher out of the University of Loughborough. She was one of the main writers of the research around Replika, an AI companion chat bot.
Ever since I thought about doing a season on tech I wanted to do an episode on AI companionship, because it’s so god darn interesting in regards to how people, especially guys operate on the internet. And to the broader themes of relationships in general.
And I had so many questions for Iliana, and so many quotes that I could’ve put in the episode. So this is the reason why I wanted to release the full interview. We not only go through Replika, but the different tropes the user liked, also why people may be interested in using the AI bot, and what women liked from their AI companion bot.
So enjoy my conversation with Iliana Depounti, on Modern Manhood: Man v/s Machine

Ever since the internet has arrived, sex has been the thing that has powered it’s evolution. From how fast the internet goes, to the regulations that policy makers have to make.
however it’s not just sex that’s causing people to turn to the internet, it’s also relationships. and how people use the internet for relationships right now tells us a lot on how gendered it is.
This is a story about chat rooms to AI companion bots with a researcher who studied the new AI companion bot. On the latest episode of man v/s machine

Spiritualists and spiritualist groups will have their say in most of men's conversations. Groups who use spiritual practices and wildman Jungian archetypes to try to solve this notion of the broken man. We give them too leeway, and we don’t critique them enough. Because these groups for decades have been defending an idea of gender essentialism and use ideas that have been shown to be ideologically biased, sexist, and naive of what we think of as the modern man.

A lot is riding on young English soccer players to bring back glory not only for their country but for their town and club. Because not only are these players excepted to do well, they are expected to be exceptional. The dress code is something we have discussed before but just casually, and I just keep thinking what is the big issue with the god damn dress code, why are we spending so much time on it, and why do people have so many different opinions on it. Well let me tell you that the dress code IS a big issue, because it’s a window to how our society treats women, men, our bodies, and our decency.

One of the biggest pet peeves I have when I read or look at things about gender, is the amount of assumptions we make around what makes a man and what makes a woman. How many times have you heard the word or phrase: “Men’s brains are like this and they think about sex all the time or they think about being the protector because that’s how they were born to be because of their real life masculine brain.” So in this episode we’re going to find out, are men really cavemen? And why essentialism is a slippery rope

The Murder of George Floyd has sparked an international wave of reconsideration and doubt over many things. Many things that we may have considered as normal.
The main one has been around the idea of policing. What does policing look like in the modern world? And is it broken? And do we even need it? Questions that not only question the role of one of the most established institutions that we have, but questions that break open what systemic racism looks like in the US, Canada, and throughout the world.
Most importantly, I have to recognize that this has been a cultural moment that started in the US. So I wanted to speak to people to John Morrison (@John_Liberator) and Josh Indy Leidy (@Indi_SRS) about not only the wave shift, the idea of police abolition, but also their fight to remove a Philadelphia acknowledgment of Frank Rizzo.

Two Weeks ago, George Floyd was murdered in the streets of Minneapolis. George Floyd, a black man whose body was treated like nothing, was killed by a police officer, while three other police officers stood by. All of this was caught on camera as another example of police brutality against black people. Ever since then, the cities of the world and especially in the US have exploded with protests, calls of action, calls for reform, calls for resignations, and calls for systemic change.
I invited two people who will be able to speak on their experience living as black people here in Edmonton. We will talk about what’s it like to be black here, as well as invite them to share their thoughts about the moment in America and here in Canada.

If you look back at the 2019-2020 hockey season, it should be really eye opening to anyone who considers themselves a hockey fan. First came the misdemeanor charge for Auston Matthews, who intimidated a female security guard. Then came the firing of Mike Babcock and then the revelation of this toxic intimidating mind games towards his younger players, then came the revelations that Flames head coach Bill Peters used racist language towards a player of color, Akim Aliu. He was also fired from his job. Then came the firing of long time broadcaster Don Cherry after his xenophobic comments. Then came the racist zoombombing of black hockey player K’andre Miller. And now the Leipsic incidents
All of these incidents can be looked as isolated, in the moment, and not indicative of what the “culture” is like. And many have chosen to look at it that way, unfortunately. Another way to see this is the symptom of the culture that hockey, and dominant sports fandom creates. The toxic, racist, misogynistic culture that continues today, behind the scenes.

Ask people to define what Positive masculinity is? Well, you’ll get a variety of answers, from being virtuous to being self-reliant, but not too self-reliant; being emotionally open, being a good father, or being a good partner.
It gets confusing, especially if we’re looking for examples! There’s a lot! But I get why we as men who really want to relieve ourselves from toxic masculinity want to look for what is positive masculinity. We want to be better, we want to be the opposite of toxic. At the same time, we get stuck with the definition. I believe there’s a reason for that. There’s a reason why we turn ourselves in knots.
I’m here to tell you that there isn’t any labels for positive masculinity.

Self-isolation we hear time and time again is not so much for us not to get the virus, but it’s so we don’t transmit it to the aging population who are at a higher risk to die. So for this Modern Manhood, you will hear from three aging males tell their stories of their life and the struggles they may face before we even knew about the coronavirus.

In this episode of Modern Manhood, we're going to start something new and hopefully something continous. A way of reacting to the news cycle and having some fluid conversations with someone who is not only a good friend, someone who came up in the volunteer space around gender about the same time. Introducing "Cold Takes" a space to talk about articles and everyday life with my co-host Veronika Ilich, coordinator for Next Gen Men.
In this episode, we talk about BBC report about worldwide UN gender studies. And another report where it showed mothers being more unpleasant about little boy's emotions than fathers.

For the 100th episode of Modern Manhood, I want to think about the future. I asked people from the r/MensLib and Next Gen Men community to send me recordings of what they think the future of masculinity would be like. And you will hear my thoughts on the future of politics and culture in regard to gender. As well as ponder about the end of gender.

I know of Kobe Bryant. I know the titles, I know the 81 points, I know when he wanted to be called Black Mamba like in Kill Bill, I know the commercials, I have even said “Kobe!” when I shoot paper basketballs at garbage cans. I also know about the rape case, I know about Denver, I know about the trial, and I know about the arrest.
What is appropriate to say at these times? And why can’t we say the full story, the full complexity of humanity?

On the last episode of Modern Manhood, we surveyed the landscape of masculinity in the last ten years starting from Tony Porter’s Man Box and the election of Rob For all the way to end of 2017
In this episode, the first of 2020, we continue the conversation with Jake Stika, Executive Director at Next Gen Men, highlighting what caused ripples in the world of gender and masculinity.
Starting from Van Attack in Toronto all the way to the Don Cherry firing, finishing off with what we think the next ten years will look like for us and this world

It’s been ten years since Tony Porter introduced The Man Box to us.
A tool and a theory that has shaped the way we see gender with men, and the system that hurts us and hurts others.
But a theory is only as good as it’s proof of concept. And you can say that in the last ten years The Man Box theory has been proven over and over again.
On this episode and the one after this of Modern Manhood, we’ll look back at the 2010’s with my friend and the Executive Director of Next Gen Men, Jake Stika.

Lately, we have seen a lot of warnings. From moms, dads, from adults that are worried about their sons. Their sons, for the most part, are easily susceptible and can be easily manipulated into communities online that are toxic, unhelpful, and in some cases downright dangerous.
Most of this is happening online, and for a lot of caregivers, they are fighting an everyday battle to just understand what is going in the digital lives of their sons. And right now they are losing the war.
In this special episode, I will show you the live talk that I did in front of an audience at the Diverse Voices conference about anti-violence here in Edmonton, Alberta. This is a community issue and one that must be faced by everyone, and I thought it was appropriate to bring to this conference. I also was lucky to be joined by Michael Hoyt from the City of Edmonton to talk about sorts of healthy communities, like Men Sheds.

Learning about masculinities, gender power structures, and feminist ideals can be key when people are organizing to fight the climate crisis.
So in this episode of Modern Manhood, we’re going to take some of the beautiful speeches done at the Wolfpack about the environment, and weave it with ideas and thoughts about masculinity and the environment.

The way Albertans reconcile with the Oil industry is a major way in which Albertans see their own identity, and the people who work in the oil patches are also in the crossfires and have been for ages. The rates of suicides went up, the rates of negative mental health have also gone up. Today we talk to Dylan Rhys Howard, one of the directors for the documentary "Digging in the Dirt" which talks about these things.
These are the un-talked about consequences of the oil industry. Un-talked about until recently.

Oil and Gas dominated the conversation for both elections here, and the people involved are caught in the crossfire. The workers who are mostly men have come to demonstrate the stereotype of Alberta men, the pickup driving, beer-drinking, hard ass.
Yet, they are just humans as well. How has this industry affected the men who work there, and affected the community around it? The way that we look at Oil in Alberta is very common to how we look at dominant masculinity.

Two months ago we talked about mentoring young men here at The Pint for Wolfpack. We're going to hear from a school counselor and a person from Big Brothers and Big Sisters about mentoring young men. Young men are feeling much more anxious, there is a lot more questioning of how men quote unquote should be in society. And there’s also a lot more complexity in the world, which allows not only for more breathing room for being your own self, but there’s a lot more pressure to pick a self that you want to be.
So the question around what it means to be a man, to me, breaks down to how do we treat our young boys?

Fat. It was a word that I was called when I was a kid, and a word that I still get called, by myself. It was the constant barrage of images and messages of what it was to look like a man. I wanted to examine why as men we’re very obsessed with not being fat. And the mental gymnastics people do to justify insulting people who are fat, and then insult themselves.

We’re here in 2019 because the media created a monster. So much that being anti-racist and anti-sexual harrassment or using gender pronouns or talking about toxic masculinity is somehow a political thing. Or that we’ve come to the point where issues that I think are community issues is now a wedge between man vs woman or left vs right.
This type of media is not working anymore. And this media created a monster that platforms dangerous and troubling ideas.
How is the media handling this? How is the media dealing with gender in a bigger case? We speak with Michelle Da Silva from Xtra to find out more.

We had an awesome Wolf Pack last time. It was our one year anniversary of Wolf Pack in Edmonton and we celebrated by talking about how work has a gendered lens to it. Either through the careers we choose, to the trouble we give to men and women who are not working their “traditional work roles." We wanted to hear from the people that have experienced both sides of the coin, and to try to get to the gritty knowledge of what it’s like to be in those roles.

Toxic Masculinity, it’s what many people think this podcast is about, a term that comes loaded with many definitions: gender roles and dominations, expression of emotions, the opposite of healthy masculinity, whatever that looks like, and what can be noted as traditional. All of them add to the confusion of what Toxic Masculinity, a phrase that is entrenched in our vernacular, actually is. So I ask, does the media get this essential part right?

The way that masculinity gets talked about in the general mainstream media really annoys me.
If anyone wants to learn more about how masculinity shapes our daily life, or how gender affects the world at large, the media does a piss poor job of explaining even the basic of concepts. How does someone even learn about multiple masculinities, gender inequality structures, systemic issues that deal with masculinity?
Is there a solution to all of this? Or is this even a problem?

We have been talking about the relationship between men and female friends for a long time. It was the basis of the movie When Harry Met Sally, a good 5 years before Friends invented the Friendzone.
The issue is that the lesson of those movies and in fact of society is that men and women are sooooo attracted to each other that they cannot be friends.
So today, I’m going to give you a small treat, I’m going to give you a listen to the last WolfPack we did here in Edmonton, to get a chance to listen to our storytellers talk about The Friendzone.

There is a notion especially in western society that environmentalism is deemed girly or not manly. Either by being vegetarian, caring about animals, or just caring about the environment in general.
Why is that? Even though issues like climate change is a non-gendered issue that affects everyone, men for the most part resist green behaviour or activism. Why do a lot of men think being eco-friendly is unmanly?

Even in the year 2019, there is a worry about the label of feminism when it comes to men. I just want to be clear, when I get a chance to talk to a lot of men there’s a lot they agree with in regards to pro-feminist values. You know except a few idiots here and there that try to be contrarian. It might feel like those idiots are everywhere but they’re not. Not that I see anyways, I see a lot of guys that are confused, misinformed, feeling shamed, feeling anxious about what they should support. They’re worried that if they embrace the word feminism, that they are more prone not only from other men but from women who are now holding them to a much higher standard.
My question is, why is that label so hard to hurdle? why is it so hard for men to say that they are feminist?

Ever since the movement to create better ideals around masculinity, there have been a lot of popular male figures stepping up to the plate to talk these issue. None bigger though than movie and TV star, Terry Crews.
I got to hear Terry speak in an event hosted by the Alberta Council of Women's Shelter, so from then I wonder what is it about Terry Crews that we like? Why is he the flame in which this message gets carried on? Or is he just a man? Flawed like any other?

Brendan Kwitkowski, a Ph.D. student out of the University of Edinburgh, and a Canadian teacher out of BC, spent his master’s research time wondering why were 81% of students diagnosed with behavioural disorders male? Why are males 4-7 times more likely to commit suicide?
Those questions (among others) led him towards research that held the socialization of males at least partially responsible for these worrying statistics. So he dug further and did some research with young men.
