New York City is home to the nation’s most segregated school system, a fact that surprises those who think of the Big Apple as a progressive beacon. Deep inequities exist at every level of the NYC school system. We think more people should know about them and push to fix them.

That's why, each semester, we bring together a team of high school interns from across the school system to tell important stories from the perspective of the real experts: students.

Writing for a unanimous Supreme Court in the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education opinion, Chief Justice Earl Warren claimed that segregation “generates a feeling of inferiority” among black students “that may affect their hearts and minds in a way unlikely ever to be undone.” As a white teacher in 100% non-white New York City schools, I think about these words often. How does segregation affect students’ hearts and minds? Recently, I started going into high schools across the city and asking them. Their testimony – raw, honest, revealing – forms the basis of the first season and adds missing perspectives to the growing conversation about school segregation.
