As my children get older I realize more and more that our time with them is limited. Just the other day I saw a photo of a peaceful spot my daughter and I used to go - and there instead were her and her friends together. Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching which often means that we are looking for ways to show a little extra love to those we care about. A New Year can often bring with it many changes. Changes in our goals as we seek to adopt New Year's resolutions. Changes in the weather (man has the snow piled up here in Utah!). Perhaps changes in jobs, homes, or even seasons of life. During this time it may be quite normal to want to resist the change, or feel overwhelmed by it, but when we get right down to it we may just be experiencing a little bit of what is referred to as change fatigue. Although change fatigue is often applied to the ongoing changes within an organization, it definitely applies to our personal life too.

The holidays are upon us - and let’s face it we all have our favorites. I have a coworker who lives for Halloween, friends who get excited for Friendsgiving, their take on the Thanksgiving holiday, and what child doesn’t look forward to Christmas?However, did you know that with the holidays comes an increase in injuries, residential fires, and even domestic violence? According to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, cooking fires remain the #1 cause of residential fires with most of those occurring on Thanksgiving Day; they also report 160 decorating-related injuries EACH DAY during the holiday season most involving falls; and according to BestLife, online fraud attempts spike approx 14% between Thanksgiving Day and Cyber Monday alone.
So, how can we prepare for a safe holiday season this year? Now, I love a good romantic movie, but I gotta tell ya - never have I seen such a love story as my parents. Today would have been my parents' 54th wedding anniversary (my mom passed away almost 3 years ago to cancer).
Unfortunately, our society has gone from our grandparents being married 75+ years, to our parents maybe celebrating their 50th as my parents did, to my generation (Gen X) only having 48% of marriages surviving. As divorce rates are on the rise for the Millennials, it’s the new Gen Z who have exchanged marriage for simply living together.So today, I thought we’d take a look at tips of how to have a healthy and happy marriage from someone who seems to have gotten it right - my dad. Now I wish this could be an interview with both my parents today, but I am grateful to both of them for their faithfulness to each other and God through their marriage, to where I have the safety, security, and legacy they have shown and are leaving to us kids and our kids - of what marriage was intended to look like - - -one that is selfless, team work minded, fun, full of laughter and adventure through life, supportive, forgiving, self-controlling, thriving, encouraging, serving, and basically one that stood the test of time. Please tell me I am not the only one who has struggled with finding that right balance when it comes to health and wellness? Years ago I was going through one of the toughest, most pivotal moments of my life when my brother encouraged me to stay active and find outlets for my physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health. Well, one thing I found was that all four of these, in one way or another, involve REST. Experts say that the more we can balance these four areas, the healthier our body systems - which overall effects our health and wellness. The challenge seems to be in knowing HOW to find that balance? As a child I always found it hard to find what I was thankful for - or they seemed to be trivial - you know, "I'm thankful for my toys, or that I got to have a down day from school (ha!)", but as an adult I am finding it's harder and harder to narrow down to five, let alone one thing I am most grateful for - God is SO good and as I mature and grow in my walk with Him I truly see something each and every day for which to give thanks - that alone I am grateful for.One of the things I am grateful for this year - is you! I grew up going on girls trips with my mom and absolutely loved that time together. From going back to Missouri to visit my grandparents, side adventures to Colorado to see old friends, quick overnighters in our home state, and fly-away journeys to women’s conferences…we absolutely loved our memories made together.
One year, my sister, mom and I had a purpose-filled trip to go help some family friends who were recently diagnosed with an incurable illness. Unfortunately, at last minute they had to cancel our coming and we soon found ourself with airline credit awaiting to expire. On the advice of my brother to go somewhere we’d never invest in going ourselves (we are all momma’s and usually invest our extra pennies toward our families) we decided to randomly pick an extreme destination…Beverly Hills, California.
We enjoyed our spontaneous trip so much that we decided from then on we would have an Annual Girls’ Trip. Sadly, after three years of our trips, our mother passed away so we ventured out on the fourth year Girls’ Trip in her honor. We realized how much we treasure these times together and have committed to continue such Annual tradition in honor of my mom. Not wanting to break the bank, yet desiring to personally splurge on fabulous weekends together, my sister (Christy) and I would like to share our adventures with you in hopes that as result they may help you in your Girl Trip planning.

Let's face it - life can be tough and we need each other. I think one way we can accomplish this is through encouragement. I've always liked what Barnabas in the Bible is known for. Acts 4:36 shares with us how Barnabas actually had a different name of Joseph, but then the disciples named him Barnabas as that actually means "son of encouragement."). Barnabas was all about focusing on others instead of himself and he was known as an encourager. Our world however tends to be so "me" focused. The media is flooded with tips and tricks on how to be happy, telling you just do what makes you feel good, and how to have it all - and we have all these reality shows of following people's drama. Now please note, I have nothing against the Kardashians, don't hear me wrong, but what I'm referring to is our society tends to teach us that the focus must be on us, that life is all about being happy, how many hits/followers/reaches/downloads can you get - as that will determine your sucess, your worth, your value, your - happiness or fullfillment. But it's so important we come together and focus on being there for one another, to have each other's backs, to encourage those around us - that it is when we humble ourselves, put others first, serve one another - that we are able to really see what matters - and that life isn't just "about me." What seems to be on much of the world's mind - ok, aside from the ongoing pandemic - are the world games going on. I think everyone is appreciating the positive distraction right now. We've been going down to my dad's house to watch the competitions. I love hearing the stories of those who have overcome, persevered, and fought for something. One thing the summer games teaches us is that our past doesn't define us, but can act as a source of strength to us.

This past week I took my kids on a little road trip. Driving through the open fields and small towns of Wyoming and South Dakota made me think of growing up traveling on road trips with my aunt and uncle. These memories got me thinking about this road trip I was on with my kiddos - what would be their take aways in years to come? But even further, it got me pondering how we remember people and more specifically - how people will remember us? Perhaps we can better grasp this by asking ourselves: How do we WANT to be remembered?Maya Angelou said, “I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” So, how do you want to make people feel - or, in other words, how do you want people to remember YOU?

Some years ago my mom and dad were at a restaurant for Sunday lunch when my mom took a sip of her sweet tea only to spit it out and then learn that instead of sugar in that sweet tea, it was pure lye. Fast forward through a trip to the hospital ER, a ride in the life flight helicopter to be admitted into the ICU Burn Unit of a major hospital, and over a week in a coma - my mom miraculously walked out of that hospital weeks later. According to the 2019-2020 APPA National Pet Owners Survey, 67 percent of U.S. households own a pet and the numbers are only rising due to the surge in pet adoptions during the COVID-19 pandemic which has people spending more time at home. There are many benefits of owning a pet. Forbes reported that owning an animal can, “increase opportunities to exercise, get outside, and socialize. Regular walking or playing with pets can decrease blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and triglyceride levels. and Pets can help manage loneliness and depression by giving us companionship.” I've noticed first hand at the benefit of simply teaching responsibility to my son who has kept a pet fish alive for over a year. This Easter is looking a little different than a year ago. There seems to be a glimpse of that light at the end of the tunnel - one might say a ray of Hope. As we reflect on the Easter story found in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John we find a few examples of Hope that we can learn from Easter (otherwise known as Resurrection Day).
1- Are you feeling rejected and alone?2 - Who are we to love and forgive?3 - How can we be selfless and hold true to our promises?
Easter is a reminder that we can truly face anything in life, rejection, loneliness, heartache, trials, putting others needs first before our own - all because He lives! Forbes recently released an article referring to the importance of empowering employees with statistics that over a third of organizations that empower their staff tend to experience revenue growth between 10-30%, and 16% of these organizations experienced growth above 30%. Disappointingly though, while 90% of businesses tend to see the importance of empowering their team at all levels, only 7% of those actually make it a reality.
Although Forbes mentions many businesses to look at for such examples of developing, leading, and empowering teams such as the Ritz Carlton, and Disney, it is a church that has caught my attention on their intentionality of making leadership a priority and what appears to be a success story of development, leadership, and empowerment of their team.

According to the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, 13% of US employers utilize personality assessments (otherwise referred to as human development systems); and depending on the source 80-88% of the fortune 500 companies attract talent using behavioral interviews.
There are plenty of conflicting reports out there as to whether or not personality tests are reliable. The Washington Post has done an article on the “5 myths about personality tests”, Forbes covered a story on how personality tests seem to indicate that the results are permanent, and even the New York Times shared of a woman’s story about it being mandatory to take a personality test when applying for a job only to find out she wouldn’t get the job because there wasn’t a role for her on the team per her assessment results.
Although there are conflicting reports as to how often to take the personality test, Cleverism.com reveals that you can never be completely objective about yourself, and you’ll always answer the questions on the test in accordance with how you think about yourself “now”. It goes on to say that people change and the person you are now and your traits might alter significantly in the future.
So why all the craze with personality tests? Well, there are upsides amongst all the controversy. They can help us learn more about behaviors (how you deal with stress, are you a team player), they can educate us on how to best understand and communicate with those around us, and they can help us learn more about our strengths and weaknesses - even what may be triggers for us, so that we can grow as a person and even a leader.
Psychology Today shares that personality tests are looking for five broad domains:Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Neuroticism, and Openness to Experience.
Now I've taken my share of personality assessments - from Myer's Briggs and Strength Finders to 5 Voices and DISC analysis, but what are we to do with the results? What really is the point?
Well, today we are going to cover three main areas on how to actually use our personality assessment results no matter what personality assessment you take.
1) Understanding our Voice
2) Knowing the rules of engagement
3) Learning how to control our voice
Overall taking personality assessments is one way to be open to feedback so that you can continue to grow personally and professionally. As Aristotle said “knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.”

Today it is all about balancing our life.According to the financial diet, nearly 80% of all students work while attending school. And Mental Health America research shows that 70% of all students are stressed about finances, the research goes on to emphasize that with "work, school, activities, and friends all demanding attention, many students struggle with balancing and prioritizing the different areas of their life." I love Christmas time. As a child my dad (who was our pastor) and mom would invite our entire church congregation to our home for a Christmas Open House. But I realize Christmas isn't fabulous for everyone. For some it's a financial burden. To others it is a time of loneliness. And others it is filled with difficult memories of missing a loved one or even unpleasant memories growing up. I empathize with you - I do. Although I had a perfect upbringing, my life would change Christmas of 2011 and continue to have a major impact each year around this time of year. Through it all I saw hope. Hope that God would see me through. Hope of God's provision. Hope of God's protection. Hope of God's healing. And hope that He would be by strength and never leave my side. This wasn't the path I had planned, but it is the path He has prepared for me. Through it all, Christ truly is our HOPE of CHRISTmas.

Today we are talking about all things photos and photography. American photographer, Aaron Siskind said, "What you have caught on film is captured forever...it remembers little things, long after you have forgotten everything." That's so true! I love to look back at my photos and reflect on those memories. In fact, my sister, and mom, and I used to have scrapbooking nights where we'd go stay at a hotel and scrapbook our photos until the early morning hours. Now I find myself just compiling a lot of saved images on my phone or computer because I take so many, but with Christmas and New Years approaching there are sure to be plenty of photo ops for you, your friends, and your family. According to Business Insider, "we are now posting a staggering 1.8 Billion photos to social media every day." In fact, Omnicore just released last month that 350 million of that is on just one platform alone - Facebook. That's 4,000 photo uploads per second! So how can you take the best photos? Well, today we have photographer Caleb Jones with us to give us practical tips on how to capture that moment to be picture perfect.I have had the pleasure of seeing Caleb in action and even honored to have some events I was apart of captured by him. Reasonings for the burnout included anything from too much travel, long hours, high stress, emotionally stressful, continuous changes, complex tasks, not feeling like they have "me time" with all the technology.
Truth is - burnout can happen to anyone - from those in college just starting in the workforce, and stay-at-home moms or dads, to part-time workers and of course those who seem to have it all as executives.

When I first started in the industry I developed burnout. About this time I received the news I was the employee of the year and received a trip to Disneyworld. While there I was able to get away from the day-to-day operations and lighten my load as I just had fun. I was so grateful for the trip that as I flew home it had me reflecting on good times in my job, things I enjoyed - and before I knew it I was counting blessing upon blessing of my job and looking forward to getting back as I had some fresh ideas to implement. I was so thankful for this trip because it also taught me at an early age to stick with tough things, not to give up or quit, but rather to take a moment to breathe, regroup, and press forward.

Today is #Giving Tuesday (which happens to follow the frenzy of Black Friday and Cyber Monday each year). Giving Tuesday was created back in 2012 to help "unite countries around the world by sharing our capacity to care for and empower one another."According to Neon CRM, the winter months are reported to be the best fundraising months. November accounts for 46% of annual giving and December 30% of annual giving. However, with tax returns coming up, this Spring can also be a good time to fundraise as people have cold, hard cash in hand and can often be more likely to give to various causes.
If you take part in annual events such as 5 or 10ks, half-marathons, or other fundraising events for non-profits, chances are you are starting to look ahead and put those events on your calendar now. But when do you start promoting and raising funds for such events?

The other day my kids and I were at a local event when we saw a girl crying as her mom was dragging her out the exit door. The little girl asked "why are we leaving" to which the mom frustratingly replied, "Because you're not appreciative." The little girl wailed, "But I AM appreciative." As I watched this sight unfold before me I had to laugh - as a mom I can totally relate. Isn't that how life can be? We try to do something nice for others and it just isn't enough. I guess it's part of the whole "keeping up with the Jones'" mentality of not every having enough, comparing what we have with others, or even being jealous of what others do have in life. It boils down to, "Are we content?"I heard a quote once that went a little something like this, "If you woke up only having what you thanked God for the night prior, what would you still have?" That's pretty convicting. On this episode we are going to take a look at four ways we can have a grateful heart. First - creating habits. Perhaps this is journaling or simply writing it down. Maybe it's as you get up out of bed in the morning or before you go to bed at night. For me and my kids one way is around the dinner table each night we discuss one thing that was the worst part of our day and one thing that was the best part of our day. This helps me know their perspective as to what the weight of the world on their shoulders looks like to them, but also for us to end on a good note of counting our blessings of what went well in the day. Perhaps this may even involve getting back to the old fashioned custom of writing a handwritten thank you note to those who have done something for you either of a gift, word, or simply time.Second - surround yourself with reminders. This may be quotes that you put around your home or even photos displayed. There are so many places to put photos too - from your phone, your computer, to even a frame on your desk at work or hung on the wall at home. These photos might include trips you've been on or places you'd like to go, pictures of your kids, spouse, parents, pet, or wherever your happy place is.Third - be present. Put down your phone, put away your computer, and simply be in the moment. My dad's dog does this to us where he'll nudge away our arm from the computer or physically get inbetween us and our phone as if to say, "pay attention to me." Be in the moment.Fourth - refocus your thoughts. Basically change your attitude and perspective from the negative to the positive. Look for the good in even the toughest times. I have a verse next to my bedside that reads "Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable, think on these things" Phil. 4:8. This helps me to take any frustration of the day and refocus my thoughts on what is good. After all, gratitude is a choice.I hope that in the days ahead you'll implement these four tips to change your frown upside down and CHOOSE to have a grateful heart.

With Thanksgiving and Christmas upon us, we often start looking for ways to get involved with giving to others. From Angel trees to food drives and even secret Santa projects. This week is the national collection for Operation Christmas Child. According to Samaritan Purses website, "In the summer of 1993, Samaritan's Purse President Franklin Graham received a call from a man in England asking if he'd be willing to fill shoeboxes with gifts for children in war-torn Bosnia. Franklin agreed but figured Christmas was months away. He forgot about the promise until he received a call back around Thanksgiving asking about the gifts. Franklin asked his friend, the late Pastor Ross Rhoads of Calvary Church of Charlotte to see if he could help with the need. A Sunday shortly afterward, Pastor Rhoads demonstrated for his congregation how to fill a shoebox with simple gifts and encouraged them to include a letter to the child as well. Within weeks the church had 11,000 shoe boxes lining their hallways. Due to the generosity and additional gifts from Canada, Samaritan's purse sent 28,000 shoebox gifts to children in the Balkans that Christmas. Every year since, Samaritan's Purse has collected shoebox gifts filled with toys, school supplies, and hygiene items for children around the world. Since 1993, more than 178 million children in more than 150 countries have received an Operation Christmas Child shoebox. The project delivers not only the joy of what, for many kids, is their first gift ever, but also gives them a tangible expression of God's love."It's an honor to have a special guest, Ilona Penner, join me today as she was a recipient of an Operation Christmas Child shoebox years ago. Ilona grew up in Ukraine and now she packs shoeboxes and delivers them to Ukrainian children. Join us as Ilona shares with us about her upbringing in Ukraine, the memories of receiving a shoebox while living in a Ukrainian orphanage, and even provide suggestions on how to pack your own shoebox for a child in need. As leaders aim in taking good care of their teams, often they will hit challenging times. Those challenging times will reveal the character of a leader. As so many eyes are on the leader - it's obvious that leaders have influence. So how can a leader be one of strong character? We'll take a look at how we can have a positive influence on our character through the use of our time, our attitude, and how well we are a team player. We'll learn that at the root of it all may be the factor of forgiveness - even when our feelings aren't on board with such action. As result, we'll discover how we can best cheer each other on through our own humility, serve those we lead, and do our part in pouring our experiences, education, and knowledge into those around us as we seek to serve as a mentor. No matter the leadership position, as Nona Jones says, "You don't have to have all the power, just recognize the power you do have." Join me as we talk with a special guest, Shante Johnson, about how to make a positive impact in your community.Shante' is a local Real Estate Agent, Motivational Speaker, budding Author, and an Advocate for families of Fallen Officers and First Responders. Shortly after graduating high school, she married her childhood sweetheart Derek Johnson. On the morning of September 1, 2013, Shante's life was tragically turned upside down when her husband, who was a decorated Draper City Police Sgt. in Draper, Utah, was shot and killed while stopping to help assist with what appeared to be a disabled vehicle. - just 10 minutes before his shift was to end. The shooter then turned the gun on his girlfriend and himself. Both the shooter and his girlfriend survived. At age 31, Shante' was left to pick up the pieces of her and their son Benson's shattered lives. While caring for her son, she is now an active advocate for police officers, first responders, and their families. She sits on the Board for COPS (Concerns of Police Survivors) and is the Public Relations Director for Utah's FOP (Fraternal Order of Police). In 2015 Shante' partnered with local and state lawmakers to pass a new bill that would provide health benefits for the families of fallen police officers and firefighters up. Up until that point, all benefits for the surviving family members were discontinued at the time of death. She continues to push legislation to support the needs of the widows/widowers of all our first responders.I've watched Shante' throughout these years and she's handled herself with such poise and strength for her son and others around her. She went on to truly make some commendable impacts in the community and state. Join me as Shante shares with us what taking the step to get involved in her community has looked like, what has been most meaningful to her, what she's learned from it, and what she still hopes to accomplish as a result of her active involvement. She'll also share tips on how to balance it all - from being a mother and wife (as she has remarried), to out working in the workforce and engaged in community service.
