Randy Ullom and I talk all things Chardonnay. Ever since the acronym ABC came to light 25 years ago in the NY Times, wine drinkers have debated this polarizing grape. We discuss the legacy of the world's most popular grape, and discover what the current wine world thinks on this topic. As well, we talk about Randy's entry into wine back in the 1970's, his degree in viticulture and enology, and he shares some fun stories about how he got the wine bug while skiing in Chile.
Winemaster Randy Ullom and his signature moustache have overseen the production of Kendal Jackson wines since 1997. As the winemaker for the number-one selling Chardonnay in America for 28 years, Randy is an authority on the subject. He’s been making wine since the 1970’s and with Kendall-Jackson for 28 harvests; he has perfected the winemaking techniques that other winemakers have mimicked for years.
Our audio conversation was recorded over Zoom video conferencing with Randy on his cell phone, pulled over in his car somewhere in Mendocino County, California. While his battery died.

In this episode we go into how she got into wine, the natural connection between wine and geology and her love of both, women in the wine world, the wine community, the complicated geological terroir that is Alsace, blind tasting with her friend and mentor Rajat Parr, grapes she couldn't live without, and many many segues. A lot of segues. We also talk about why and how Brenna got into creating her podcast and what she has in mind for future seasons.

She has also worked extensively in the mining industry where she further developed her skills in geologic mapping and interpretation, soil sampling, and geophysical surveying.
Today Brenna works with wine professionals in all areas of the trade, from growers in France to importers and buyers in the US, in order to precisely define the most impactful elements of their terroirs in a relevant and approachable manner. David Paterson and I sit down and talk about the 2019 harvest, Okanagan viticulture, and the push for sub-appellations. His knowledge of the Kelowna wine scene is immense, and he shares it openly and honestly. His riesling is world class, and we discuss this grape and the others that Tantalus is known for. Of course, I also find out his desert island grape varietal, which is always a fun topic.
David was born in Canada, raised in New Zealand, and returned to Canada as the winemaker for Tantalus Vineyards. He's been making wine for them for 10 years, and in the last 5 years, took on the role as GM. He received his winemaking degree from Lincoln University in Christchurch, NZ and following time spent working in the local NZ industry (Neudorf Vineyards) he travelled the wine world gaining experience.
While honing his skills over a handful of international vintages, he was fortunate to work with some incredible mentors along the way including Anna Matzinger at Oregon’s Archery Summit, Blair Pethel at Burgundy's Domaine Dublère, and Stephen Henschke and Paul Hampton at South Australia’s Henschke Cellars.

This episodes features my conversation with Jason Parkes. The man behind the winery that is the hatch, and the various entities that flow from it. Jason and his team have made a name for themselves by being unique and providing some character and fun to the world of wine, and because of this, they are a known presence in the Okanagan. Their tasting room is always full.
Jason and I sat down for an hour and talked a lot of topics, some of them too controversial to be recorded. I learned a lot more about the man that runs this fun, dynamic brand known as the hatch. He has a great team of people that assist him, and because of them, his ideas have flourished.

This episodes features three short interviews, and a recap of the BC Pinot Celebration from Kelowna. I was fortunate enough to stay with my friends on the Kitsch Wines property, and sample 25-30 different wineries at this celebration.
Also, I was invited to the Garagiste North Wine Festival, which focuses on small wineries in BC, that make 2000 cases or less. Some of them truly are garagiste level, while others are verging on big name success. I was lucky enough to taste quite a few, with some of course being a very low intervention style, so a definite contrast to the bigger wineries. All in all, a great weekend.
I also managed to record a few minutes with three of my favourites from the Garagiste North Wine Festival, which was at Sperling Vineyards in East Kelowna. Mike Mosny of Winemaker's Cut, Anthony Buchanan, who is the head winemaker of Desert Hills, now has his own side label called Anthony Buchanan Wines, and finally Tyler Knight from Lightning Rock, who shares the wine growing and wine making duties with his wife, Jordan Kubek.

Kelsey Rufiange is a relatively new winemaker in the diverse Okanagan wine landscape. Her family planted vines on their property in 2013, and over the last few years, she took over all of the grape growing and wine making. She studied oenology and viticulture at Lincoln University and worked vintages in New Zealand, California and Australia. Their wines feature limited SO2 usage, relying on minimal intervention, natural fermentation with organic growing and biodynamic practices.
This episode features my recent trip to the Okanagan region, with my stop in OK Falls to visit Kelsey and taste some of her wine. We also got to experience barrel samples from some of her up and coming wines. I'm joined in this podcast by my wife, who helped me share a great talk with Kelsey.

We talk about some of our upcoming wine orders we have coming in, our current wine cellar, what certain wines we desire to drink, and what we are drinking over the Christmas season.
I discuss the big topics that were on the mind of those in the wine world for 2018, which includes the natural wine movement, master somm re-sits, and the release of Somm III. Many thanks to those who have been generous enough to donate to the show, including recent prizes from Hatch Wines and Kitsch Wines.
I also talk about how the show has grown, and how my pallet continues to grow, especially given I have mentioned in previous episodes my desire to consume more Italian wines in 2018. Jane and I spoke a couple of weeks ago, before the controversy of the most recent master somm class had come to light.
This episode is an interesting moment in time, as she and I talk of this past year, her hard work, and her current life in Australia.
We plan on speaking again with both her and her partner Jon Ross, who is also a master somm.
I hope you enjoy this fascinating look at the hard work and dedication it takes to get this designation, and how she might have to do it all over again.
