Submit ReviewA lot has changed in the music business over the past several years. Outside of the Covid pandemic, one thing that has remained constant in the industry is touring. Or has it?
In this very interesting, and heartfelt episode, we have an in-depth conversation with Sharon Kendrew, the President and CEO of High Road Inc., a tour trucking company based in Franklin TN. We talk about what it takes these days to keep all the parts moving when it comes to touring.
Originally from upstate NY, Sharon spent most of her life in the Boston area before relocating to TN in 2016 and launched High Road. Sharon has worked with artists across all genres, including H.E.R., Switchfoot, Meshuggah, Dropkick Murphys, Surfaces, TobyMac, Old Crow Medicine Show, Red Bull, The Wiggles and many others. Mom to two adult kids (the bigs) and two teenagers (the littles), she spends her free time with her family, enjoys travel and of course, live music.

Benny DiChiara is not fragile, yet he understands the fragility of life. He is not lost, but he knows the aimless paths of those who wander. He is not a victim, but he has experienced life-saving salvation from the inside out. His world has been shaken, but his feet are planted firmly on the strongest of foundations. And even as he faced an abyss of the unknown, he never did so alone.
In October 2015, the singer, songwriter, businessman, motivational speaker, father, and husband endured a traumatic brain injury (TBI) that placed his life and future in peril. A fall sent him to the emergency room and ICU with a concussion and closed fracture of the skull base with subarachnoid, subdural, and extradural hemorrhage. The catastrophic injury could have easily ended his life or, at the least, compromised the quality of it. "I absolutely remember nothing from the first month after my injury," he shares. "It's just gone. Once I started to come out of it, there were memory gaps, speech issues, and walking issues. Everything looked surreal."
Out of that came his Christian music ministry, and his band “Empowered”. Now releasing their latest and 4th album “Yahweh-Nissi” on Slingshot Records, Benny is working on putting together a tour to support his music, his ministry, and an extension of that called “Children’s Cup” which we talk about on the show.

Born in Houston Texas, but raised in Iran, Aarash Darroodi remembers as a small child, running for cover when sirens warned that missles were coming from Iraq. Those moments helped shape his life, including being seperated from his parents (and raised by his grandparents), surviving the Iran - Iraq War, traveling throughout the Middle East and parts of Asia, becoming an accountant for a major insurance firm, and eventually landing his dream job as an attorney at one of America's most legendary and well known music manufactures in the world.
As General Counsel & Executive Vice President of Fender Musical Instruments, Aarash shares his insight into what has made Fender Guitars one of the most recognizable instruments known. From such guitarists as Buddy Holly to Eric Clapton, to Stevie Ray Vaughn, Fender has set the benchmark for other guitar makers to strive for. Also, as President of Fender Play Foundation, Aarash talks about what their company is accomplishing in the school system, providing instruments and education for tomorrow's musical leaders.

Willie Nelson is a world-renowned musical legend, but in Texas, he’s something more: a beloved native son and benevolent elder who’s brought countless new talents into the family fold — often during the famed Luck Reunions at his ranch outside of Austin.
As Willie’s 89th birthday neared, Luck Presents, the entity creating those events, and Bruce Robison, the singer-songwriter, producer and force behind all-analog record label The Next Waltz, wanted to celebrate his influence and impact with a Texas-sized party. On May 1, 2022, Sheryl Crow, Nathaniel Rateliff, Steve Earle, Robert Earl Keen, Margo Price, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Vincent Neil Emerson, Shinyribs, Emily Gimble and Robison serenaded their inspiration with songs plucked from the greatest canon in American music. Fortunately, Robison rolled tape. The result, One Night in Texas: The Next Waltz’s Tribute to the Red Headed Stranger, will be released on April 28, 2023 — one day before Willie turns 90.
We talk with Bruce Robison about the selection process between song and artist, and the end result of this collaboration honoring the red headed stranger known as Willie Nelson.

Why does it seem that some artists have better luck than others? Is it being in the right place at the right time? Is it knowing the right people? Could it be just dumb luck? Maybe it comes down to hard work, perseverence, and building a strong network community, where giving is as important as receiving.
Singer, Songwriter, Booking Agent, Screen Actor, and Entrepreneur Tim Charron joins us on this episode, where he he talks about his success in the music and film and television industry. Tim his wealth of information, on how he got started, what motivated him (including becoming his own booking agent and being so successful at it, he's now representing major acts), and how this Rhode Island native makes it all work splitting his time between Florida and Nashville. Most importantly, no matter what he's doing, how he prepares like a psychopath to get it done.

Growing up in Mt. Pulaski Illinois, at the age of 13, Singer and Songwriter John Schlitt joined a local band called "Vinegar Hills Hometown Band Something Different". After graduating from high school, Schlitt enrolled in the University of Illinois, earning a degree in Civil Engineering. However with his main interest in music, he joined the rock band "Head East" in 1972, going on to having such hits as "Since You Been Gone", and "Love Me Tonight". In 1980, John was fired from the band due to his drug dependency, and his career stalled... Until one day receiving a call from guitarist Bob Hartman asking if he'd be interested in becoming the lead singer for the Christian Rock Group "Petra". Over the next three decades, the band went on to release 20 studio albums, as well as two Spanish-language and two live albums, selling nearly 10 million copies while being nominated for 13 Grammy Awards, winning four, and winning 10 Dove Awards.
John shares his musical gypsy journey, how he became a Christian, along with his new solo projects he's working, and getting ready for Petra's 50th Anniversary tour.

What does music have to do anything with Foster childern? Foster kids, once they age out of the system (typically around 18 years old), have an unemployment rate of 47%. Nearly 50% of former foster children are homeless with 18 months of release from the system, and 80% of the prison population is made up of former foster youth. (*)
Amped Kids Foundation (501 (c) 3 organization) believes in building a community of support, and empowering our foster youth for a better future. It's a known fact that children who are involved in music education programs have higher academic scores, higher graduation rates, and and stronger relationships. Amped Kids provides instruments to kids, along with professional music lessons, songwriting workshops, band scholarships, and other unique music experiences, bringing mentorship, healing, support, and connection to children. Founded in Georgia by April Rooks, she brought Dave Craver from "Micro Music Festivals" on board as President, who along with Music City's own Will Carter are working on opening new chapters across the nation, starting right here in Nashville, TN.
If you are someone who has a musical instrument that is no longer being used, and want to make a difference in a foster child's life, then check out this episode, and listen to what Dave and Will have to share about what Amped Kids are doing to change lives.

Winner of the Miss Virginia title, and going on to compete in the Miss America Pageant, Meghan Shanley discovered an insatiable appetite for meeting fans and making new friends during a life on the road that saw her traveling over 3,000 miles a month in the wake of her win. With a deep love of music, Meghan discovered that she loved touring as well and began to focus on the pursuit of a career in music.
It was not long before Meghan’s talent saw her opening shows for national acts and performing on prestigious stages including the Ryman Auditorium and the Wildhorse Saloon. She has been featured on Fine Living Network’s The Genuine Article and performed at the wedding reception of Paula Deen which aired on the Food Network. The original song she performed, “Here,” has become a hit with brides nationwide.
Meghan’s platform as Miss Virginia was focused on building self-esteem in kids and several years ago, she launched a speaking program for youth groups and schools. Now, she has published her first book with the same mission.
Her latest endeavor marries her passion for kids with her love for music … the first in a children’s book series with a core message: we are each quite special, we all have unique talents, and when we accept ourselves and others, we can make some beautiful music together!
Meghan has published the first in a planned book series withmail.com/mail/client/AEFt1iGO9dM/dereferrer/?redirectUrl=https%3A%2F%2Furldefense.com%2Fv3%2F__https%3A%2Fwww.vincentplayshispart.com%2F__%3B%21%21FJkDyvWmnr4%21ZaCOivCLdCElpPH7cPoeYDXGaX08eQxokzuBaWQqCfMW_Nxi2tqB97IK8AF85kF6OZDsCAjFHZQKRbyjtGCU1w8W%24">VINCENT PLAYS HIS PART.[vincentplayshispart.com]

As a songwriter, you know that a good song isn’t going to make it in such a competitive field anymore. Your creation has to be a great song. Something so stellar, that its far above anything else out there when it comes to capturing the attention of the artist, and ultimately the listener. A good song publisher and plugger can help you navigate those sometimes treacherous waters.
Meet Sherrill Blackman, Nashville’s renowned Song Publisher and plugger. Blackman, a Dudley, North Carolina native, arrived in Nashville in 1980 and graduated from Belmont University with a Music Business degree in 1982. He served on the staff of The Nashville Songwriters Association International for six years and was General Manager of Buckhorn Music for four years until 1994,
when he founded his SDB music group, a publishing and songplugging company. Since that time, he has secured recordings in Country, Pop, Rock, Gospel, Bluegrass, Blues, Jazz, and Polka, resulting in multiple radio hits, as well as Gold, Platinum, and Multi-Platinum certifications, several Grammy and IBMA nominations and one Dove award winner. His song placements include artists that have been inducted into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, The Country Music Hall Of Fame, The Bluegrass Music Hall Of Fame, and The Gospel Music Hall Of Fame. Blackman is a three term past president of The Nashville Publishers' Network and was named Music Row Magazine's Songplugger of The Year in 2004, 2005, and 2006.

“Success in the music business begins with a dream, a vision. This podcast will give you the listener the insight and tools to turn that vision into a reality. Meet the industry professionals who work day by day behind the scenes, helping to make those dreams come true. Welcome to the Business Side of Music.”
This mission statement, created by Tom Sabella and Bob Bender back in 2016, is heard each and every week during the intro of each podcast episode. Those words continue to ring true today. Performing since the age of 9, singer/songwriter/performer Doug Robertson knows a thing or two on how to craft a song. He learned at a very young age writing songs by taking a Beatles tune, and changing the lyrics, or vice versa, keeping the lyrics, and changing the song, to get a better grasp as to how a piece of music was structured. That experimentation helped develop his songwriting skills. As an adult, he fed his career by performing in Reno Nevada at local sandwich shops, and even wrote a commercial jingle for Schlotzsky's Sandwiches.
Now residing in Nashville TN, Doug continues to write, record, and perform, but along his journey, has learned that an old dog must continue to learn new tricks, and adjust in one’s application of their career, in order to have continued success. Robertson shares his work ethic, what he’s learned on his musical path, and the epiphanies he’s discovered along the way.

Women in Music. We all know about the superstars. Taylor Swift, LeAnn Rimes, Alicia Keys, Beyoncé, Carrie Underwood. We see them every day in the news and on the charts. But how did they get there? What did they have to sacrifice to make it in what is considered by many to be a male dominated business?
Jana Jones Uttz who is an industry consultant, and vocal coach based out of Nashville TN, joins us in the studio to discuss the perils and pitfalls that so many women find when entering the music business. This frank discussion provides some insight as to what it takes, how to navigate the waters of the entertainment industry, and what to be on the lookout for.

Meet Al Bowman. He started out working in the LA Music Scene owning, and driving limos for such superstars as Whitney Houston, who introduced him into the world of celebrity seat filling. That provided an introduction to such luminaries as Patti LaBelle, Tommy Lee from Motley Crue, The Beach Boys Brian Wilson, and even silver screen star Martha Ray. Through a chain of events, including the 1992 LA Riots, and the emerging grunge rock scene in Hollywood, his focus changed from driving stars, to creating awards shows for stars to walk the red carpet.
Enter Bill Gazzarri (“The Godfather of Rock” and the owner of the legendary Sunset Strip rock club "Gazzarri's"), and The honorary mayor of Hollywood Johnny Grant, who became mentors and the inspiration for Al Bowman to begin producing music awards shows in Los Angeles for the independent artist, with the same flair, and fanfare as the big shows provided. Bowman’s awards shows included: The Los Angeles Music Awards, Hollywood Fame Awards, Phoenix Music Awards, Producer Choice Honors, and the Las Vegas Fame Awards.
Al has now created The Nashville Music Awards, along with creating a non-profit organization called “The Nashville Music Foundation”, providing something to the independent creative community. Al’s goal is to inspire the future of music by honoring the past. Bowman explains how a simple act as walking the red carpet at special events, can assist in elevating your exposure on a national, and Global level.
Joining us on this episode as special guest host is Hemp Meadows, singer, songwriter, producer, and one half of the hit Pop/Rock duo “Hemp & Denim”.

Denver-born, and recently relocated from NYC to Nashville, AJ Smith’s unconventional path to becoming a pop artist is reflected throughout his music, which has the uncanny ability to evoke a nostalgic desire for dramatic pop of decades past while sounding modern, fresh, and in-the-moment emotional. A flare for the dramatic is likely written into his DNA - AJ’s father ran away and literally joined the circus (as a promoter who was unafraid to step into the ring or even the “Globe of Death” for the sake of the show), while his Great Great Uncle was famed Cuban pianist Ernesto Lecuona, who composed the famed standard “Malagueña”.
It's no surprise then, that Smith’s songwriting and performance abilities have earned multiple awards, including the prestigious Abe Olman Scholarship from the Songwriters Hall of Fame and a semi-finalist ranking in the 2020 International Songwriting Contest. Recent highlights include making his national TV debut on The Kelly Clarkson show, consistent airplay on SiriusXM, the cover feature as Performer Magazine’s Artist of the Month, collaborating with Martin Guitar’s launch of a new line of ukuleles (which included teaching a SpaceX astronaut how to play a Black Pumas song in space!)...and stories in American Songwriter, Good Morning America, CBS Radio, Spin Magazine, and more.
Music featured on this episode include:
“We’re All Gonna Die” - AJ Smith
“Rock The Night Away” - AJ Smith
“Naughty” - AJ Smith

Jonelle Mosser has worked with some of the most amazing talent in the music business. Industry veterans such as B.B. King, Trisha Yearwood, Etta James, Wynonna Judd, Rodney Crowell, Vince Gill, Waylon Jennings, Patty Smyth, AJ Croce, Levon Helm and Bruce Cockburn, have shared the stage or the studio with her. Jonelle has also worked on numerous solo projects over the span of her career, beginning in 1996 with her compilation album of Texas singer-songwriter Townes Van Zandt, whom she first met in 1978. That debut album was a 1996 compilation of Townes covers called "Around Townes”.
That particular project brought her to the attention of Bonnie Raitt producer Don Was. Don was so supportive that he soon put a band together with Jonell as lead singer. He rounded up A-listers such as guitarist Mark Goldenberg from Jackson Browne's band, keyboardist Benmont Tench from Tom Petty's Heartbreakers, and Beatles drummer Ringo Starr. They recorded 7 songs and were named the New Maroons. They played Farm Aid in Ames IA, but the recordings were shelved because other projects took precedence. Jonelle did go on to record a rendition of the Supremes' "Stop in the Name of Love”, which later landed on the soundtrack to the 1998 film "Hope Floats”, starring Sandra Bullock and Harry Connick Jr.
She’s currently working on new projects, hoping to release them in 2023.

When the 2020 Covid pandemic put a stop to the live music industry, Rachael Bronstein thought about the thousands who work behind the scenes to put on the amazing shows that she loved. Those concerts were her happy place, a place where she could check her worries at the door. She had become a devoted fan over the years, attending dozens of concerts and live festivals, developing relationships with many of the talented (and underserved) professionals who make road shows possible. She learned how challenging it can be for new and seasoned professionals to manage the logistics of touring life and one’s personal life. Rachael paired her love of music with her business expertise to create Life’s Jam, a resource of tools and solutions to make road life a little easier.
Rachael Bronstein is an Accredited Financial Counselor and financial coach. She got her start at NBC in production finance and launched her company, Life’s Jam, last year in response to the hardship created for the music industry due to the halt in live events. Since so much of the music industry is made up of freelancers, Rachael wanted to make sure these professionals were set up correctly both personally & professionally.
During the past year, Rachael has helped touring professionals get financially organized through her work with The Roadie Clinic and private coaching. She has hosted workshops for the Music Forward Foundation and Women in Music. In addition to her music financial coaching, she is also head coach for Jean Chatzky's FinanceFixx and InvestingFixx programs. Jean was on the Today Show for 25 years as the financial editor and has been a pioneer in the personal finance space. You can find out more about Life’s Jam at www.lifesjam.com.

Why would Arsenio Hall, Herbie Hancock, Keb' Mo', Kenny G and countless celebrities at the pinnacle of their careers choose to share the limelight with one musician? Vail Johnson is a talent unbounded by musical genres; an artist who succeeded as a top LA Studio Musician, Internationally Acclaimed Bass Player, Jazz Musician, Band Leader and Solo Performer.
Vail’s music appears in film, TV, on radio and in 6 CD’s that exhibit the depth of his experience. Compositions range from improvisational jazz created with free-form musicians to projects drawing solely upon Vail’s schizophrenic talents as writer, singer, virtuoso and producer. Transcendent in his music is an unequaled voice expressed with 4 strings. You hear melodic tones of Spanish guitar, bluesy finger-picking and monster slapping. You feel samba, funk, blues and rock. Vail’s live performance on bass became something extraordinary, by playing constantly as a member of as many as 10 bands at any given time.
From a family history exuberant with Metropolitan Opera singers, Symphony players, Broadway musical producers, grandma ‘Iny’ playing the mighty Wurlitzer in silent film movie theaters and wildly colorful performers (Magicians, Traveling Minstrels, and Carnival Folk), Vail was destined to emerge as a multi-talented artist and multi-layered performer with a singular voice.
Like his kaleidoscopic roots, Vail’s multi-faceted talents mirror a childhood immersed in the expression of Classical, Choral, Gospel, Bluegrass, Dixieland and Top 40 music by mentors with creative genius. He merged talents of Manhattan School of Music Scholar and noted Percussionist; Banjo-picking Night Club Owner; Vocal Master (Doctorate Choral Arrangement), Award-Winning Conductor and more as the youngest of 7 brothers. Each one mastered 4-part harmonies in choir and live performance playing in a popular Seattle Dixieland band and touring internationally through Asia entertaining troops on Air Force Bases with Top 40 music. Vail added Jazz to this medley with jazz studies at UW. Moving to LA, Vail formed his own jazz bands, played with renowned Latin and Fusion Jazz artists and toured internationally playing every major Jazz Festival around the world.
Throw this mix into a blender and what do you get? Vail electrifies audiences with virtuosity, passion and humor in 40 Years Around the World, a continuously evolving production of music and stories from world-wide performances and recording studios as a solo artist and with luminaries such as Kenny G, Herbie Hancock, Stevie Nicks, Keb' Mo', George Benson, Michael Bolton, James Ingram, Gil Scott Heron, Paula Abdul, MC Hammer, Steve Perry, Arsenio Hall, Patti Austen, Peabo Bryson, Christopher Cross, T. Graham Brown and David Cassidy as well as lesser known but highly respected artists Eric Marienthal and Frank Gambale (both members of the Chick Corea Electrik Band), Leslie Hunt, Warren Hill, Young MC, Edgar Winter, Freddie Ravel, Carmine Appice, etc., etc., etc.

Abe Partridge received national and international recognition in early 2018 when he released his first official full-length release, Cotton Fields and Blood For Days, to rave reviews and substantial airplay on Americana radio. It landed Partridge a lengthy feature in The Bitter Southerner and the album was chosen to be one of their “Top 30 albums of 2018.” Ranging from the earthy to the surreal, from the spiritual light to the depths of depression, Partridge draws listeners in with a combination of southern gothic storytelling, dark humor, and gripping intensity.
Partridge was on tour in the Netherlands and Belgium in November of 2018 when he met and bonded with David Ford, who says, “By the time you’ve witnessed ten thousand men take to the stage with an acoustic guitar to sing about their feelings, you can easily get to the impression that whether magnificent or mediocre they’re all to some degree just recycling the schtick of Bob Dylan, James Taylor or any number of whiskey-sodden bluesmen. Then one rainy night in the Netherlands I saw Abe Partridge take to the stage with an acoustic guitar and it felt like the first time anybody ever thought to try it. He didn’t just sing his songs, he set fire to them. It was brutal and tender and smart and angry and funny and brilliantly, uniquely authentic. I saw it as a magnificent reminder that great songs, delivered with honest intensity were what first made me want to do any of this in the first place.”
When Partridge is not writing or touring, he is creating his folk art paintings, which now hang in art galleries around the Southeast and in the private collections of Tyler Childers, Mike Wolfe (American Pickers), and Rick Hirsch (Wet Willie). He painted the cover art for Charlie Parr’s, Last Of The Better Days Ahead (Smithsonian Folkways). His monthly subscription-based art club has sustained him (and his wife and 3 children) during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Partridge is also considered to be a storyteller and documentarian with his recently released "Alabama Astronaut" podcast along with host Ferrill Gibbs who podcasted for the Houston Chronicle and is currently the director of podcasting for the CBS affiliate KBTX in College Station, TX. The podcast is about Partridge's 2.5-year journey during the COVID-19 pandemic, discovering undocumented American music found in serpent-handling churches across Appalachia. The podcast was released on September 14, 2022, and on September 16th it hit the top 10 in Apple Podcast documentaries.
American Songwriter Magazine said, “Abe Partridge has established himself as one of the most respected songwriters and visual folk artists in the southeast.”
Partridge is currently putting the finishing touches on a new studio album "Love in the Dark" projected to be released in early 2023.

In this episode, we have a special guest and a really cool guy, Jack Sharkey. Jack has a stellar career in the music industry, both as a performing drummer, and as Senior Technical Engineer at KEF Speakers. However, we take a different direction, as we spend time in the studio talking about something that we’re both very passionate about… Classic Rock, and why it's not obtainable anymore.
When was the best time for rock music? Was it during the moment when such groups as Deep Purple, Grand Funk Railroad, Santana, and others of their kind became established and successful? What happened to the “Hair” bands of the 80’s? Was Nirvana the last truly classic rock band? Did the era in which the music was so successful have anything to do with the social issues of the time? We attempt to clearly define that era, and what eventually caused it to end (spoiler alert, we came to the conclusion that it was most likely the bean counters who got in the way).
Special thanks to Jack for bringing an amazing bottle of Jefferson’s Bourbon. It made the conversation, and the evening even better than we thought (and that was pretty darn good as it was!).

Meet Todd Smith and Allan Hall. They make up two thirds of the award winning Gospel Group “Selah”. Todd was a missionary kid who grew up in Africa, and Allan was an East Tennessee child from a small town. They met at Belmont University in Nashville, and wound up performing background vocals for fellow student Brad Paisley. Fortunately their musical journey just started there, and has since exploded into a worldwide career, releasing multiple album projects, and winning numerous Dove Awards, along with having several #1 hit songs on the radio.
While performing at a Sunday morning church service with Todd’s sister Nicole (who already had a Pop recording contract), they were discovered by record label owner Mike Curb, who signed them to a multi-record contract. Having already recorded their first album with money provided by Todd’s mother, the label deal cemented the project with a larger production budget, along with distribution, marketing, and promotions. Their hit record “Be Still My Soul” finally had legs, and was reaching a much larger audience than any of them ever anticipated.
Little did they know that on September 11th 2001, things would change for them in a way that no one could have anticipated. While on a radio tour promoting their second release “Press On”, the United States was violently attacked, and thousands lost their lives on that day. With the group literally 20 minutes from the Pentagon when the building was hit, they were promoting their new single "Press On". Radio stations began playing the title cut off of their album, and “Press On” became their first number one hit single at radio, helping provide comfort to those who listened to the song.
Now, 25 years later, Selah is releasing two albums consecutively, One titled “Greatest Hymns Volume three, along with their second Christmas project “At This Table”.
Todd and Allan discuss their career, including their time in the studio with the legendary Dolly Parton, what it was like to walk away from a lucrative record deal after all the success they had, and start their record label in the process.
Music from this podcast includes:
“Stand By Me”
From the album “Greatest Hymns Vol. 3
“Put Your Hand In the Hand”

Richie Scholl was living a pretty cool life. Having moved from Queensland Australia to Nashville Tennessee to further his career in the music business in 2007, he was performing on a regular basis, sometimes 6 nights a week in Music City. While doing so, he met his future bandmates Brian Powell (bassist), and Derek Smith (drums), and the 3 of them went on to form “The Richie Scholl Band”.
Then Covid hit, and literally shut everything down, including the band’s ability to play live together. Needing something to do to keep him and his bandmates busy, and not lose the creative flow that the three of them had started, Richie went on to write songs, and thus began the journey of recording their self-titled album “The Richie Scholl Band”.
Born and raised in the cattle, coal, and rail town of Rockhampton, in Queensland, Australia, Richie Scholl started playing bars and clubs, literally a few months after first picking up a guitar at age 13. Richie’s live shows are a testament to the years spent “paying his dues” in front of a live crowd. Although it wasn’t long before he was writing his own music, and eventually released his first album “Zeke's Wheel”. A record influenced by his early Rock influences by artists such as AC/DC and The Black Crowes.
It wasn’t until meeting with well respected Australian producer Michael Flanders in early 2006 however, that things started happening for Richie. Work was scheduled to begin on a second album, “The Blacktop Junkie’s Guide To Richie Scholl” almost immediately. This album resulted in #1, and #5 singles on Country radio, and a #35 video on CMC Australia.
During the recording of the album, the decision was made to introduce Richie Scholl and his music to the U.S market. After a brief trip to Nashville in 2006 to meet with labels and industry people, Richie relocated to Nashville, TN in early 2007.

When Adam Blank was forced to leave behind a scholarship and drop out of college to help his ailing father, he didn’t know what lay ahead. The Marietta, Georgia-based entrepreneur knew he had to pitch in, so he took a job at a recycling plant and put his creative aspirations on hold.
Blank emerged from this curve in the road anthemically triumphant. For over twenty-five years, he has owned and operated two highly successful recycling businesses, and his hard work has afforded him the opportunity to return to his passion for the arts. Recently, the Georgia Council for the Arts acknowledged Blank’s contributions to the local music scene by appointing him a seat on their Board of Directors.
His music-driven entrepreneurial ventures include the music merchandise company Blank Threads, and the production/promotion business Blank Records. Blank Record’s flagship offering is the buzzed-about online concert series Live at the Print Shop.
Adam talks with us about the road he took, how it helped shape him, and create a new streaming video series.

Not Everyone Should Get a Participation Trophy, nor does everyone get a record deal.
What is the definition of talent? What does it take to be truly successful? And at what point should you walk away when you realize it's not going to happen to you?
The music business is no different than any other industry, from the aspect that no matter how hard you work, you may still not make it to the top of the heap.
For you to give your best, are you willing to sacrifice your social life, your friends, or even your family? In a business that almost requires a 24/7 presence, the music industry can be tough on a good day. Is getting on one of today’s reality based music contest TV shows worth that sacrifice? How much of that will actually enhance your career?
It’s all about knowing what direction you want your career to head in, and just as important, having the ability and understanding to take direction from reliable people in the industry.
Artist consultant and vocal rehabilitation coach Jana Jones Uttz discusses this, and other topics that today’s up and coming artists need to know, and hopefully understand if they’re going to take the steps required to make an impression on the music scene.
We even have a discussion on Elvis, and how Sam Phillips and Colonel Tom Parker were more influential regarding Elvis’ career than originally thought of or considered.
Jana Uttz is a Vocal Producer, Voice Performance Coach, Artist Consultant, and Freelance Writer within the Entertainment Industry. She attended Union University, receiving her Bachelor of Music Degree, Cum Laude, in Vocal Performance in Double Minor in Music Theory/Journalism. She has over 30 years of experience in the music industry. Jana is Currently A & R director, talent scout, and vocal producer for Round Room Music and Recording Studio along with being the owner of Vox Matrix Studio. She's also Adjudicator for Tennessee area vocal and/or choral festivals, competitions, talent shows, and awards shows. Jana has been a vocal consultant/trainer for many reality tv shows - The Voice, American Idol, America’s Got Talent, and the Miss Tennessee Scholarship Pageant, along with being Freelance writer on all subjects that pertain to the human voice, singing styles, music history, and local entertainment.

Larry Groce’s career is quite an interesting and intriguing story. He attended high school with future recording artists Michael Martin Murphey, Ray Wylie Hubbard, and BW Stevenson. He became a regular performer at an NYC Upper West Side restaurant owned by Melissa Manchester’s husband, and went on to record 9 albums and 36 tunes for Disney featuring children's songs including, when in 1976 he wrote “Pooh for President” for Disney to be released at Sears Stores.
In 1976, his satiric novelty song "Junk Food Junkie" became a Billboard top-ten hit, and led to appearances on The Tonight Show, The Merv Griffin Show, American Bandstand, The Midnight Special, The Rich Little Show, Nashville Now, The Disney Channel, Dr. Demento, and A Prairie Home Companion.
In 1983, Groce co-founded Mountain Stage, a two-hour live music program produced by West Virginia Public Radio and distributed nationally and internationally by NPR and Voice of America's satellite radio service to over 200 stations. He is its host, producer and artistic director. His musical tastes have been instrumental in defining the sound of the show. Mountain Stage was the first nationally broadcast radio or television program to feature live performances by Lyle Lovett, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Sheryl Crow, Barenaked Ladies, Alison Krauss, Ani DiFranco, Phish, Counting Crows, Ben Harper, Ryan Adams, Sarah McLachlan, Tori Amos, Ben Harper, Lucinda Williams, David Gray, and The Avett Brothers. The show has also featured musical pioneers such as Bill Monroe, Ralph Stanley, Doc Watson, Pops Staples, and Brownie McGhee as well as modern superstars R.E.M., Martina McBride and Norah Jones. Groce retired from hosting Mountain Stage in 2021 with his successor being hit singer songwriter, and West Virginia native Kathy Mattea.
Joining us on the show as co-host is John Adams from Money Concepts. We talk a bit about how Larry saved the money he earned during his career, and we even delve into how the Chuck Berry Hit “Johnny Be Good” came about.

What gets you pumped to go out and play a gig? Is it the prestige? The adulation from the audience? Or is it the paycheck at the end of the night? Too often we find that the entertainer perceives themselves as someone who is either not worthy of charging a fair and equitable amount for their time and talent, or they’re afraid that someone else is going to play the gig for less money (or heaven forbid… FREE!). Unfortunately this mindset creates a snowball effect, where eventually artists are playing for low wages, tips only, or just for the exposure, hoping they’ll get discovered by someone. We’re the only industry with this business model, and it's time to work on ways to break that bad habit.

What's the difference between Country music in the USA, and the rest of the World? We get the opportunity to dig into to that idea with Australian songwriter and recording artist Lily Grace, who shares with us what its like to be on the other side of the ocean, and what it takes to break into the home of Country music, Nashville, Tennessee.
Naturally gifted, Lily Grace began singing at 10 years of age. She dived deeper into music a mere four years ago, when she was gifted her first guitar at the age of 11. Her determination to self-fund her own equipment saw her busking at local markets, and soon after, attracting her to local cafes, restaurants, events and festivals.
With several years’ stage experience already behind her, Lily Grace delivers her own storytelling originals alongside a vast collection of popular, crowd-pleasing favorites from contemporary, classics, and country. The emotions of love, determination, kindness, gratitude and pure joy pour forth in every one of her performances.
Lily Grace is a sought-after talent, having recently opened for Amber Lawrence and Catherine Britt’s ‘Love and Lies Tour’ across Queensland, joining Tania Kernaghan in concert, touring with James Blundell, being announced in the line-up of emerging artists for the Gympie Muster and performing at the Groundwater Country Music Festival this year.
An exciting collaboration has been in the making for Lily Grace this year, with the legendary country music artist, James Blundell. The two penned a song together earlier this year, co-headlined a concert on the Gold Coast and recently completed the ‘Annie June’ tour, where they took their co-written song to stages across Queensland, following on from its successful release in May.
The excitement around the track helped it reach the Top 10 on the ‘Australian Country Radio’ chart, #17 on the ‘Hottest Australian Country Hits’ chart, #9 on ‘Country Radio Charts’, #31 on the ‘Countrytown Hot 50 Music Chart’. A live video stream on country radio program, KIX Live, and with the official music video being played in high rotation on Foxtel’s & Fetch CMT TV channel reaching #3 in ‘Today’s Top 15’, also featuring in ‘Official Top 30’, ‘Fresh Country’, and ‘Aussie Country’ programs.
Off the back of a successful debut duo release, Lily released her debut solo single in August. ‘Sixteen Wishes’ is an uplifting and summery track, which rocketed to #3 on the Australian Country iTunes Chart and #27 on the Australian All Genres iTunes Chart. Within a week of it’s release, it was the #1 streamed and downloaded song for Australian radio airplay. ‘Sixteen Wishes’ continues to climb the Official Top 30 on CMT television, currently placed at #21.
The future certainly looks bright for this young artist shortly venturing to the Tamworth Country Music Festival with a plethora of gigs lined-up and semi-finalist nominations in 9 categories of the Tamworth Songwriting Association awards.

Born in Romania, raised in Germany, and now living in Los Angeles CA, classical guitarist and instructor Mircea Gogoncea joins us on the show. As an teacher of the instrument, Mircea believes that its important to start at an early age when learning the craft. This is where the company Tonebase comes in.
The company which has been described as “Netflix meets Masterclass”. has a firm belief that knowledge is meant to be shared. The passing down of information from one generation to the next is the only way a culture can continue to develop and grow. Nowhere is this more true than in music. Without a great teacher, students at every skill level cannot progress sufficiently. That is why it is crucial for all students to have access to the best instructors possible through every stage of their musical development. Unfortunately, for too long, the knowledge of the world's greatest musicians has been accessible to only a select few - those with the necessary talent and funds to attend the most elite universities and conservatories. At tonebase, their mission is to change that standard by democratizing high-level music education around the world. By combining music, passion, and technology, we aim to build the go-to resource for anyone learning an instrument anywhere.
Mircea Gogoncea is a Romanian-German guitarist based in Los Angeles. He has performed in over 350 concerts on 5 continents and has been awarded 169 prizes. His interactive concerts feature own compositions for guitar, live electronics, and audience participation, challenging the traditional separation between the roles of performers and listeners. He holds six university degrees, including a Doctor of Musical Arts from USC. He is Head of Guitar at tonebase, the leading online music education institution.

Welcome to the world of Johnathan Pushkar. Singer, Songwriter, Social Media Influencer. Growing up south of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, Johnathan at a very young age, fell in love with the sound of The Beach Boys and The Beatles. While in school, he performed in a talent show with a 50’s and 60’s tribute band (playing drums), and the response from the audience had him hooked. He made the decision to attend Belmont University to further his music education, and while there made the decision to record an album project of the songs he had written. Out of that came a record deal, and the rest is history.
One of the things that Johnathan discovered while putting his game plan together for his musical future, was don’t let other people say no for you. Don’t be afraid to ask. The “ask” is always worth it. Also, although he wasn’t looking for a record deal, when offered one, he took the time to research and determine what was best for his career. We talk with Johnathan about this, along with his experience becoming an influencer for Lego, and how that toy company became an integral part in his music, especially when it came to working with the folks who run the Elvis Presley estate, and Graceland.

She is undeniably one of the most eloquently emotive vocalists of modern times. In the studio with us is award winning recording artist Lorrie Morgan. Lorrie shares with us what it has taken to be successful, the perils and pitfalls that have gone along with it, and the desire she has to keep going.
Morgan also shares with us how she and her late husband, and Country music legend (and recent Country Music Hall of Fame inductee) Keith Whitley met, her time with Tammy Wynette, Loretta Lynn, and her close relationship with Naomi Judd.
Lorrie also explains how she has become the official Ambassador for “Nashville Hot Chicken”, and with the help of some of her famous friends, have created a music video promoting the Nashville staple.
Lorrie Morgan has been around great songs all her life. She is a Nashville native who is the daughter of Country Music Hall of Fame member George Morgan. She made her debut on the Grand Ole Opry stage at age 13, singing "Paper Roses." Her father died suddenly of a heart attack at age 51. She was 16 at the time and just beginning her musical career. Lorrie Morgan began making her own records shortly thereafter and was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry at just 24 years old.
Morgan married fellow country singer Keith Whitley in 1986. She was signed to RCA Records in 1987, and her onslaught of hits began the following year. Whitley's tragic death of an alcohol overdose in 1989 left her a widowed working mother. Their duet "Til a Tear Becomes a Rose" earned her a 1990 CMA award.
Her first three albums, Leave the Light On (1989), Something in Red (1991) and Watch Me (1992), all earned Platinum Record awards. Her Greatest Hits collection (1999) is also Platinum. War Paint (1994), Greater Need (1996) and Shakin' Things Up (1997) are all Gold Record winners.
She sang "The Sad Cafe" on Common Threads: Songs of the Eagles, which was named the CMA Album of the Year in 1994. Country fans voted Lorrie Morgan their TNN/Music City News Female Vocalist of the Year in 1994, 1996, 1997 and 1998.
Lorrie Morgan, the first woman in her genre to begin her career with three consecutive Platinum albums, is back in the studio with award-winning producer Richard Landis, working on a new album. It is sure to be yet another collection showcasing the rainbow of emotions, from darkest heartache to bright, shiny humor, that is the hallmark of Morgan’s range.
Concurrently, Morgan is working on a second project of original songs co-written with Larry Gatlin.
"Where I am in my life right now, I'm not afraid to express what I feel," she says. “I'm not afraid to express my views on anything, especially on being a woman and my experiences in this business and in life.”
Morgan is known for her lustrous vocal phrasing and the down-to-earth believability of her torchy performances. On records such as “A Picture of Me Without You" and "I Guess You Had to Be There," the ache is palpable. She is feisty and sassy on "Watch Me," "What Part of No" "Five Minutes" and "I Didn't Know My Own Strength." She has kicked up her stiletto heels in fun on her hits "Except for Monday" and "Go Away." On her epic "Something in Red" she is an honest, struggling everywoman.
She has been a daughter, a bride, a mother, a divorcee, a widow, a single mother, a breadwinner and, ultimately, a survivor. In many ways, Lorrie is a living, breathing country song, and she knows what she sings.
She is a peerless song interpreter, drawing from a deep personal well that spans enormous tenderness to cheeky hutzpah. Whether covering a classic or sharing one of her own songs, Morgan is truly a song stylist in the grandest tradition.
"I have always been a songwriter and I do love to write," she comments. "But I’m only comfortable co-writing with a few people, and I don’t like appointment writing at all. Plus, I'm not one of those people who says, 'If I didn't write it, I'm not going to record it.' If somebody else's song is better, I'm going to record it and not my own.
Morgan has recorded in collaboration with her father, as well as Whitley, Frank Sinatra, Johnny Mathis, Tammy Wynette, The Beach Boys, Dolly Parton, Andy Williams, the New World Philharmonic, and Pam Tillis. She has toured with George Jones and shared a stage with Jerry Lee Lewis, newly inducted into the Country Music Hall Fame along with Whitley.
“My children and I are thrilled to see Keith’s name added to the list of stars who’ve earned their place in the Country Music Hall of Fame,” she says. “It is a well-deserved honor, though Keith himself would’ve been painfully humbled. I am happy for his family and the many, many fans who continue to point to Keith as one of the all-time greats.”
"My dad used to say, 'You should never take yourself too seriously,' and I got my sense of humor from my dad. I love to have fun. I've reached the age where I feel that I deserve good company around me, people who can make me laugh, who love music and who love to have a good time.”

TuneGO is a Web3 tech company for the music industry. Their patented technology—the TuneGO Vault—creates the world’s most advanced end-to-end solution for securing content and creative rights, distributing music and video to digital platforms, and creating NFTs. The foundation of the music industry, especially music royalties, is extremely antiquated compared to other industries.
TuneGONFT, is their new marketplace which secures creative rights in the TuneGO Vault and on the Flow (by Dapper Labs) blockchain. This forward-thinking technology certifies the “DNA” of a song, video, or digital artwork prior to the minting of the NFT, maximizing the value in the eyes of collectors. In addition to securing all rights, this first-of-its-kind solution enables artists to, mint NFTs, distribute their music to streaming platforms, monetize their music on social media, and license their content for TV, films, and video games—all on one unified platform.
Using TuneGONFT, NFT buyers and collectors can gain secure, private access to the patented TuneGO Vault after buying an NFT, where they can view the original creative rights, as well as access, view, and download all of the digital files included on the NFT.
In 2021 NFT sales reached $25 billion growing from a mere $95 million in 2020. That’s an over 26,000% increase, and we see them growing and evolving especially within the gaming and music industries.
While there is still a bit of a learning curve with NFTs and a consumer education process, NFTs create a stronger relationship between creators and their fans. We currently live in a technology world built for consumers, but Web3 and NFTs are creating a world built for creators plus collectors and enthusiasts. We are seeing more experiential NFTs where artists provide viewing of recording sessions, virtual meetings, Q&A sessions, concert tickets, etc. We also can’t forget about the monetary aspect of NFTs, we are seeing a lot of money being made on the secondary market by fans and collectors.
John Kohl is Co-Founder and CEO of TuneGO, where he provides the strategic vision for the Company. That vision focuses on both disrupting and improving the music industry for the creative community, by building a platform that helps creators protect their intellectual property, safely collaborate, distribute their music and pursue new opportunities

All of us have our favorite band or artist we love to listen to. Most of us can’t even begin to imagine what it would be like to actually meet their idol, let alone hang out with them.
David Stark did just that… and more. Author of the book “It’s All Too Much”, David describes what it was like growing up in North London in the 1960’s as a dedicated fan of The Beatles. From riding his bike to Abbey Road Studios to seeing John Lennon get out of his Rolls Royce limousine and entering the legendary studio (and telling David to move his bicycle in the process), to gatecrashing the Yellow Submarine film premiere in 1968 at the age of 15, eventually winding up sitting in the second row next to Keith Richards, right behind Paul and John, to meeting Sir Paul years later when he inducted David as a ‘Companion of LIPA’ in Liverpool for his work with songwriter students. He shares his stories of hanging out with John and Yoko, how he was invited to their final concert, but due to the last minute change of venue (the now legendary “rooftop concert”) missing it because of being in school, but receiving a consolation prize of sorts, along with a signed letter from Ringo.
In addition to being an author, David is a life-long drummer who plays with the Trembling Wilburys tribute band, as well as having played with The Quarrymen.

The consumer end of things have stabilized to a point where the listener can find your music, but at the same time, can the money trail find you as the official owner and registrant of your material? What if you’re a co-writer on a song? Do you know the legal name(s) of the other writers on your song? Do you have the proper metadata to ensure that your songs are registered properly?
There are 5 identifiers which control who’s doing what when it comes to registering your song, and these are used worldwide. Niclas Molinder and his partners have created a new company called “Session” which can help simplify the process for you, and code your creative content with those five identifiers that will help smooth the revenue stream for you.
Niclas Molinder is an award-winning songwriter, music producer and musician who also leads several organizations focused on transforming the music industry’s management of data and rights for the benefit of creators. After 20 years of songwriting and producing for artists such as Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, Mary J Blige and The Jonas Brothers, as well as running his own publishing company RedFly Music – the Swedish entrepreneur has become the figurehead for pioneering solutions for the massive value gap in the music industry.
In 2019, Niclas Molinder partnered with Bjorn Ulvaeus (of ABBA fame) and Max Martin to found Session, the world’s first independent global hub for authoritative music metadata sourced from creators, built to ensure creators get the credit they deserve. Molinder's vision is to bring the global music industry and technologists together to create a standard for how music creators and their representatives are identified in their contribution to songs - so everyone can get credited and correctly compensated when their music is used.
In 2016, Niclas also founded Music Rights Awareness Foundation, an apolitical foundation that works to provide an educational solution to the value gap in industry, by increasing knowledge of music rights worldwide, adjusted to the future industry.

In today’s music scene, the independent artist is King (or Queen). No longer tied to having a record deal in order to be successful, the Indie Artist also doesn't fit the normal mold for pre-existing formats. You need someone who can help when the creative decisions become business decisions, and vice versa. This is where Talya Elitzer and her company Godmode come into play.
Meet Talya Elitzer. She, along with co-founder Nick Sylvester created the GRAMMY-nominated artist development company in 2017. The duo are behind high-taste breakouts such as JPEGMAFIA, Channel Tres, and Yaeji, and their Los Angeles-based headquarters has been the secret creative hub for artists and producers like Lil Nas X, James Blake, Take A Daytrip, Omer Fedi, Grimes, SG Lewis, Noname, and more.
Godmode takes an unorthodox approach to artist development and marketing, with an unusually high track record for breaking artists who don't quite fit into pre-existing formats. They focus on building sustainable operations for their artists, so they can maintain an uncompromising approach to their work. Artists such as JPEGMAFIA, Channel Tres, and LoveLeo have multi-million dollar touring, brand, and merchandise operations, with joint ventures at Universal, Warner, and Sony
Talya Elitzer began her career at WME, looking after the touring businesses of Britney Spears, M.I.A., and Grace Jones. She moved into an A&R position at Capitol Records, working on projects for Katy Perry, Beck, and Sky Ferreira before moving full-time into godmode, where she leads management and label operations.

Getting into the music business is not easy. It’s competitive, crowded, and the success of making it a career can be challenging on a good day. Factor in those players who say they can “guarantee” you that success for a fee, and all of a sudden things get really complicated… and potentially expensive without much to show for all of your hard work.
Enter Vinny Ribas, who is the founder and CEO of Indie Connect. He’s recently created a new platform called “Cartne”, which as it develops and evolves, will hopefully take out some of the guesswork of what works, and what doesn’t, and help you avoid the perils and pitfalls of the music industry.
Cartne is a program which once fully operational will provide nearly 100 online videos and courses from some of the top industry experts on what to look for, how to avoid scams, and minimize the mistakes others before you have made in their careers.
Currently in its Beta testing, Ribas is seeking out interested industry leaders, musicians, songwriters, and anyone involved in the music business to share their stories, creating a library of knowledge for those willing to learn more about the right way of doing business… reducing the risk, and taking the mystery out of the music industry.

On this episode, Danny Zelisko shares with us his forty years in the music business, producing over 34,000 shows in that time. He talks about what it was like to get started in the business as a stagehand (including being a security guard on Alice Cooper shows), what it was like to work with concert and tour producer legend Bill Graham, and how he and Bill put together one of the largest music festivals ever, just for a little film called “A Star Is Born” starring Barbara Streisand and Kris Kristofferson.
Danny Zelisko began producing shows in Arizona in 1974. He founded Evening Star Productions, and has become known as one of the USA’s best promoters and talent buyers since.
The first room he steadily booked starting in 1976 was Dooley’s Nightclub (750 capacity) in Tempe. Acts such as The Police, Cheap Trick, Pat Benatar, Talking Heads, KISS, Bon Jovi, No Doubt and Nirvana (among many others) performed at the intimate venue from its opening in 1976, until it closed after several ownership and name changes (aka After the Gold Rush and Electric Ballroom) in the mid-1990′s. Nightclub concerts by recording stars began happening all over the country, with Zelisko leading his territory in this area of booking. Zelisko and his team produced hundreds of new and veteran bands in facilities across the valley. Since that time, Danny has gone on to produce over 35,000 shows, and has now written a book titled “All Excess; Occupation Concert Promoter”, where he talks about his time working with such greats as Alice Cooper, Bill Graham, and so many others during his 40 years in the music business.

If you’re a musician of any caliber that’s been around for more than a few years, then you know what the annual NAMM Show is. NAMM which is the acronym for the National Association of Music Merchants, which was founded in 1901. Each year the NAMM Show hosts literally the largest display of musical instruments, professional sound reinforcement equipment, and studio gear. In 2020, 116,000 people attended the annual event held in Anaheim California, known as Winter NAMM. Its sister show called “Summer NAMM” is held each year in Nashville TN.
However in 2021, with Covid in full swing, both the Anaheim, along with the Nashville Trade Shows were canceled due to the pandemic. Things started to get back on track in 2021 with a scaled down version of Summer NAMM taking place in Nashville, although the Anaheim show continued to be on hiatus… until this year. 2022 will see for the first time in history the Winter NAMM Show taking place on June 3rd thru the 5th.
We talk with Joe Lamond, who is the President and CEO of NAMM, as he shares the following:
Joe also shares some memories along the way during his tenure at NAMM, including one Saturday morning conversation with Ray Charles on a golf cart while attending the show.
Joe Lamond is the president and CEO of NAMM, the National Association of Music Merchants, a global not-for-profit 501(c)(6) trade association representing more than 10,000 manufacturers and retailers of musical instruments, professional sound, and live event production products. The association’s mission is to strengthen the music products industry and promote the pleasures and benefits of making music.
Since 2001, Lamond has led the talented team at NAMM to achieve this mission through what the association calls its “Circle of Benefits” business model, reinvesting the proceeds of its successful trade shows into grants, scholarships, scientific research, industry promotions, and public and government relations programs. These efforts have contributed to increased support for music education in our schools and greater awareness around the world of the benefits of active music making for people of all ages.

The business of music catalog acquisition has become a hot topic of discussion lately. With the sales of such song catalogs once belonging to Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Nicks, Fleetwood Mac, Dire Straits, Shakira, John Lennon, Ryan Tedder, Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, 50 Cent, Nelly, and many more, it's become a sellers paradise. But why?
We talk with music publisher Trey Bruce, who is the owner and President of Galore Entertainment, a new entertainment company that develops artists and publishing assets through exploitation & sync licensing.
Emmy Award winning songwriter, Trey Bruce, moved to Nashville just in time for the 1990s Country Music boom. Trey was a rock drummer from Memphis so… what could go wrong? Luckily, as an unpublished songwriter, Trey’s first demo got cut almost immediately by Shelby Lynn and was a top 15 hit so, as a result he signed his first publishing deal with MCA Music in November of 1989. During the MCA years Trey had a few minor cuts and then, his first #1 single, on Randy Travis called, “Look Heart No Hands”.
After three years at MCA, in 1993, Trey co-founded a small indie publishing company, Big Tractor Music, with renowned record producer Scott Hendricks and there Trey received 13 ASCAP Awards, an Emmy Award, five #1 singles, multiple top 5 and top 10 radio hits and an Academy Of Country Music, Song Of The Year nomination. During the Tractor years Trey developed a love for coffee and long nights in the studio so he became a record producer.
In 2005 Trey started a publishing/artist development joint venture with Chrysalis Music in Nashville. At Chrysalis Trey searched out new artists before anyone else had discovered them. Trey signed and developed teenagers, Charlie Worsham now on Warner Brothers, John & TJ Osborne of Brothers Osborne now on Universal Records, Chris Janson also on Warner Brothers and American Idol’s 12th season runner-up, Kree Harrison. During this period Trey was writing songs with Scott Weiland, Billy Gibbons, Kerry Kurt Phillips, LeAnn Rimes, CarrieUnderwood, Katherine McPhee, Duff McKagan and Richard Marx. Trey wrote and helped build, from scratch, a catalog of more than 800 songs in 5 years, as well as cuts in the Rock format and two #1 singles in Australia and Canada.

On this episode, we talk with Dave Philp and Steve Marcone with regards to their book “Managing Your Band: A Guide to Artist Management”. This book is considered the go-to guide for artist management in the new music industry, especially independent artists taking the DIY route. Industry insiders Steve and Dave tackle the work and knowledge required of an artist manager and band member, focusing on earning revenue from an artist’s three major revenue streams: songwriting and publishing, live performance, and recording. The book investigates the roles of the many industry intermediaries, illustrating how many of today’s artists, including DIY artists, function as their own entertainment companies. This seventh edition of the book includes updated information for the twenty-first-century artist and manager, including key information on the impacts of COVID-19 on the industry.
In the late 1960's and early 70’s, as a trumpet player in a rock music group, Steve Marcone, Ed. As a songwriter, you have to be a student of your genre. Whether it be Rock, Pop, Hip Hop, or Country. You have to learn to keep your eyes on your own paper as you create this body of work, and be fearless in doing so. At the same time, there are so many questions when it comes to not only writing songs, but what to do with your creation afterwards. It’s what goes into the song that makes it successful. Imagine building a home. You wouldn’t live in that place with nothing in it to make it feel like home. It's the furniture that makes the place feel warm and cozy. The same goes for a song. So where does one start?
Questions arise such as what is a song plugger? What do they do? Do you know that there are two parts to the publishing deal? Are you better as an independent songwriter signed to a small, boutique publishing deal, or does getting signed to a major publishing house make more sense? Can you be the songwriter, AND be the publisher at the same time? And how does one go about getting their foot in the doors when it comes to getting your songs heard? Are you actually ready?
Nancy Deckant who is the CEO of Discover Sooner, answers these questions…. and more!
Nancy is the General Manager and partner of Nashville Cool! Publishing, a songwriter and tech entrepreneur. As a songwriter, she won first place in the Indie International Songwriters Competition. As an independent publisher, she’s helped advance the careers of songwriters and successfully built song plugging practices.
Nancy is also the founder and CEO of Discover Sooner, a company that connects songwriters to publishers.

On the show with us today is Dave Ratner, the lead lawyer at Creative Law Network, a boutique entertainment law firm in Denver Colorado. We talk about what the difference is between an entertainment lawyer and a regular business attorney, along with navigating the waters when it comes such contracts as a record deal, a publishing deal, how copyrights protect your music, the new Copyright Claims Board that is being created, how labels and artists are getting creative in their record deals (is a traditional deal better than a 360 contract?), and how Covid has affected the live concert business. We even delve a bit into why the superstars are selling off their catalogs.
Following a career in the music businesses as a tour manager, publicist, band manager, and founder of his own management agency, Dave Ratner is now the lead lawyer at Creative Law Network, a boutique entertainment law firm in Denver. Dave counsels clients throughout the music industry on everything from contracts and licensing, to intellectual property registration and protection, to dispute resolution. Did you know that the portable, cheap, flimsy, music stand we all recognized in school growing up was patented in 1900, then modified in the 1950s – and hasn’t really changed much since. Every musician has a story. Stands that didn’t assemble easily (or collapsed in the middle of a performance), not to mention the struggle to fold them back up… Seriously, has anyone ever been able to fit a traditional music stand back in the little carrying bag that comes with it?
Welcome to the 21st Century. David Law, who is the creator and founder of the Wee Stand™ by Noisy Clan, joins us on the show to discuss how the idea came about after watching his kids struggle with all the books, instruments, and backpack heading to and from school, ultimately designing a sleek, ultra-portable music stand. The Wee Stand™ can be described as the lightest stand on the market, compact, storable and super fast to deploy and collapse, offering full functionality and ultra-portability for musicians on the go. It’s so cool that we actually have one in our studio.

You’ve written that first song, and you’re ready to record, but where do you start? Should you release a single, or does it make sense to release an entire album. Being a newbie in the music business is tough enough, but how do you tap into your creative and musical self, and determine where to go next? Connor Frost to the rescue.
Connor is a Musician and Educator, hailing from just outside New York City. He has toured extensively both as a solo act and with his band, Dizzy Bats, throughout the US, as well as internationally, and has self-released eight albums over the last decade. Author Frank Demilt joins us to share his vision and journey of writing this book, from his days at the Roy Park School of Communications at Ithaca College, to acquiring his first job opportunity at Soul Asylum Studios, to his current role of record producer and head of A&R at Water Music Publishing and the creative agency Sloppy Vinyl.
New Jersey native Frank Demilt learned early on that he wanted to be in the music industry in some capacity. He was always listening to music and making music whenever he could, but he never saw it as a viable career option for him.
"It was always a passion of mine; it was always something I loved to do. We only saw the big artists out there growing up, so I knew how hard it was to make it in music. It didn't help that I had crippling stage fright," said Demilt. "I did some research and found that there is some back end, behind the scenes stuff that can be done and kind of just started working through different friends and fell in love with recording and working with artists. When I found out I could go to school for it, I kind of went from there."
Demilt graduated from Ithaca College's Roy Park School of Communications as an audio engineer and quickly landed an internship in Atlanta, Georgia, at Soul Asylum Studios. Their client base included Justin Bieber, T.I., and Waka Flocka. After bouncing around between Atlanta and New Jersey and building up an impressive clientele as the head audio engineer in multiple studios, Demilt ultimately landed at Water Music Publishing. He serves as the head of A&R and Artist Development. Demilt also helped create Sloppy Vinyl, an artist development company and full-service entertainment company that is a sister company to Water Music Publishing.
"I enjoy working with artists hands-on in their development, not necessarily the recording element but helping them create the music and develop them into what they see themselves as," said Demilt. "That's really what I love to do now, is sit and listen to all the new music that comes out and find that next person and try to develop them and mold them into the best versions of themselves that they want to be."
At the beginning of 2020, Demilt and his team were trying to get some traction with Sloppy Vinyl. To help the artists, Demilt started writing some articles to give these artists some information to help guide them through the industry.
However, when quarantine hit and artists were unable to go to the studio, Demilt decided to shift gears and turned the articles into a new book called "The Blueprint: The Bible For Becoming a Successful Performing Artist in the Digital Age. "
"Quarantine hit about a month after I finished these articles. We couldn't go to the studio and couldn't get in contact with the artists, so I decided to take all the articles I had and flesh it out into a book because knowing a lot of the artists are just sitting in their house trying to figure out what to do, especially the rising ones not knowing what to do now, I wanted to give them a headstart or a leg up or insight into the industry that once we come out of quarantine. They get back to work," said Demilt. "That way they have this blueprint or guide of okay, here's what I have to do and here's what to expect. So it was kind of just like a cumulation of what I was already doing but in a bigger way to help artists as we were all stuck in our houses and not doing anything."
"The Blueprint," according to Demilt, is an A-Z, front-to-back guide about how to navigate the music industry. For example, suppose you are just starting recording in your home or already have your foot in the door with a record label or studio. In that case, the book has information about navigating the industry properly.
"It's information for the beginner that has a dream of being an artist, and I'm going to tell you what recording equipment is, how to use it properly and what to buy if you want to start in your bedroom," said Demilt. "It talks about understanding the nuances of how a song should sound to distributing your music."
For those who are a little further in their careers, "The Blueprint" dives into contract language, legal information, what team members you will need in the studio with you, and how to keep your career going once you've made it.
"I go all the way to contractual language, and we know that not a whole lot of people understand the legal side. So having a basic knowledge of terms and clauses that can come at you and what to expect in contract talks," said Demilt. "We finish [the book] with, 'Okay, you've done all this stuff, you're signed, you're here, how do you sustain your career?' I will give you information on all of it. Anyone at any point in their career can benefit from reading this.
Demilt hopes that those who pick up "The Blueprint" can get a thorough understanding of how the music industry works, regardless of what stage of your career you are in.
"The music industry and entertainment industry as a whole is a monster in itself that if you are unprepared for can beat you down and swallow you up because there's so much that can come at you," said Demilt. "I want the readers, no matter what stage of your career you're at, to understand what is the next step, what to do next, and in those steps, understand information to look out for so you're not blindsided when stuff comes at you."

Being a creative person isn't easy, especially if you're trying to do this the whole time. It's not your regular 9 to 5 job. This is your life. Your passion. Your ongoing creation. And it most often takes money to advance your dreams to the next level, especially if you decide to take the independent route and not seek out the traditional record deal. Enter Matt Lutz, the Founder, and CEO of Music Benefactors, providing a possible solution without having to sell everything you own along the way to fund your project. Music Benefactors is an SEC-registered investment platform democratizing the music industry—Independent recording artists and music businesses fund projects by partnering with music investors. As a result, artists maintain ownership of their master recordings and copyrights while fans share the projects' royalties. This unique platform enables artists to be truly independent of the primary label system while providing them with the needed capital to make and market music. Music Benefactors can provide debt and equity funding options to recording artists, promoters, venues, independent labels, music publishers, and music technology companies. It is currently funding several album projects, a catalog investment fund, a Neil Diamond tribute tour, and several other music investment opportunities. Originally from Pittsburgh, PA, Matt Lutz has founded and operated several other businesses before starting Music Benefactors. His extensive knowledge of alternative investments brought him to the music industry. Like other asset classes, music is an investment that generates income for the intellectual property owners every time it is played or used commercially. Matt Lutz's goal with Music Benefactors is to introduce music investing to all investors. By educating people about the benefits of music investing, independent music projects get funded, investors and artists share the income, and great music is made.

Will the person who you think is your fan, actually like your music. Are they willing to put the time and effort into becoming a fan of your career? How devoted and passionate of a fan are they? How do you go about getting them engaged in your career? How do you go about creating new fans, who will also become devoted followers. Just as you nurture prospects in the real world, you also have to nurture those prospects in the online world. You’re in the fan building business. You have to get them from fan, to occasional fan, to good fan, to super fan.
Mike Stewart, who is the President and Found of Stewart Internet Solutions, chats with us regarding what it takes to reach those people, and turn them from suspects, into Super Fans.
I takes marketing. Marketing is not evil. Marketing is necessary. You need to use such devices as Kindle, Amazon, and YouTube in the proper way, and learn how to leverage these platforms to your benefit. Part of this is understanding that platforms such as YouTube are a traffic generation process. It’s not an income producing process. It markets whatever you’re selling.
Mike is president and founder of Stewart Internet Solutions Inc., a internet consulting agency and services company located in the Nashville, TN, USA. Mike has composed countless radio jingles, television scores, and produced or performed on music heard all over the world. He has worked with world famous musicians such as Tommy Roe, Joe South, William Bell (Georgia Hall of Fame Recipient and 2017 Grammy Winner), Buckner Garcia, Atlanta Rhythm Section, Billy Joe Royal, Alicia Bridges, Isaac Hayes, Eddie Floyd, Bertie Higgins, Doug Johnson, and Bill Anderson. He has gold record for playing keys on 80’s hit, Pac Man Fever as a band member of Buckner and Garcia and recorded the theme to Disney’s Oscar nominated movie, “Wreck It Ralph” in 2012
The list goes on and on of national performers who’s who. He owned and operated a recording studio for over twenty years working in all facets of digital audio and video.
In 1996, Mike became passionate about the future of the Internet and how small businesses could benefit from the web if they just understood how to make it work for their company. He saw how the broadcast of audio and video information on a website was no different than the television/radio industry he had been a part of all his life.
Since that time, he has become very successful consulting with small business owners on how to set up their worldwide TV stations and broadcast their unique marketing message to the world.
Stewart Internet Solutions focused on Internet technologies that allowed audio and video to be streamed over the Internet. We developed distance training web sites, e-commerce projects, and audio/video intensive web projects utilizing HTML 5 responsive web programming. He didn’t stop there, but was constantly striving to be on the cutting edge of technology always searching for better more efficient ways of achieving his goals. After listening to a set of audiotapes in 2000, he attended his first Internet Marketing Seminar.
Initially Mike was a student himself. Soon he was hired to record seminars, events and webinars. Through techniques he learned from the seminar speakers and promoters he was able to create his own software products that made the process easier. While he had spoken to many groups, associations, and business organizations throughout the years, his first Internet Marketing Seminar speaking engagement was in 2003.
Since then he has attended and spoken at many events worldwide. Mike teaches attendees the benefits of owning the right equipment and utilizing it to record themselves to make quality multi-media audio and video information products that can be marketed for high profits. He is always on the look out for new innovative ideas, products, hardware and software to benefit his clients. His hands-on customer service approach outshines most and he creates in-depth audio and video tutorials to enhance the products he sells. These tutorials are now available in over 20 subscription websites linked from this site. More training sites are being created and update on an ongoing basis.
Mike and his wife, Susan who works and travels with him on his speaking engagements, now enjoying working with the music industry professionals in Nashville and back to his passion of song writing and music production. They have 3 children involved in several aspects of the business.

You’ve spent time writing songs. You’ve gone into the studio to record some demos. Now it’s time to get out there and pitch your artistry to the masses. But how do you go about doing it? Do you need a manager to help you thru the gauntlet known as the music industry? Is your career at a point where you would be ready for a manager? We talk with Chuck Thompson, who is a 40+ year veteran in the music industry, having worked in the Country music field as a manager for such acts as The Judds, Billy Dean, McBride, and The Ride, The Pirates of the Mississippi, Carl Perkins, Skip Ewing, Wynonna, Michell Wright, and others.
Chuck explains what you need to look for, and what management will expect in return. He discusses how management is a specific need at a specific time for a specific function.
We also go into what the difference is between an artist manager and a business manager.
We touch base on what does a prospective manager look for when signing a new act? Is it based on their social media, their touring, or their record sales if applicable?
Chuck Thompson began his 40 plus years in the entertainment industry while attending Nashville’s prestigious Belmont College. It was there that a posting for an internship in publicity caught his eye. That internship turned into his first job when he was hired during his final year of study at the college to drive the media campaigns for David Allen Coe, Frizzell & West, Ricky Skaggs, The Flying Burrito Brothers, and George Strait. He cut his artist management teeth with acts Baillie and the Boys and comedy duo Pinkard and Bowden at the firm.
Transitioning to the management firm The Ken Stilts Company where he would rise to the position of Vice President, Thompson and his team guided the careers of The Judds, Billy Dean, McBride, and The Ride, The Pirates of the Mississippi, Carl Perkins, Skip Ewing, Wynonna, and others. He worked alongside company principles to build an integrated corporate sponsorship/artist booking agency to work within the corporate and country music communities. While serving as Vice President/Director Of Public Relations for Pro Tours, the company launched co-branded country music tours for corporate clients GMC Trucks, Liberty Optical, The Sara Lee Corporation, and Sun Country Wine Coolers.
In 1995, Thompson accepted the position of Director, Media Relations & Artist Development with the newly reorganized RCA Label Group Nashville. Working with the established RCA roster and with the BNA staff to launch the careers of recently signed artists Kenny Chesney, Lonestar, and Mindy McCready, he also created the label’s media and sales opportunities’ extensive catalog of masters. While leading the label’s NASCAR efforts, working with the Kranefuss-Haus Racing Team, he developed marketing events for RCA and BNA artists and the race team’s co-sponsors Little Caesar’s Pizza and Kmart at racing events around the country.
In October of 1996, Chuck left the RCA Label Group to return to the ranks of artist management as a co-manager of Decca recording artist Danni Leigh, opening the Thompson Entertainment Group’s offices under the banner “Where music still has A Heart and A Soul.” He explains that tagline by saying, “In a world of broadening entertainment options, music is the thread that runs through it all, impacting every part of our lives. The truth in a great song and the heart of a great singer drives my passion, and my goal has always been to develop long-term brand strategies for each of our artists. In these unusual times, artists need new and innovative thinking from their management to adapt to the world we currently live in.”
Corporate brands are also searching for innovative thinkers who understand a brand’s needs and can create and execute unique, brand-driven partnerships. Harley Davidson, Coca-Cola, Panoptix, Conagra Foods, and others have turned to Chuck to help them develop and implement a brand strategy that will reach their customers through music-driven events.
In 2016, the Navigator Records imprint was added to the TEG umbrella. The latest evolution in the company’s growth allowed Thompson to utilize the many modern technologies and creative outlets now available to create a higher profile for the Thompson Entertainment Group family of artists. In the fall of 2018, Navigator Records released new studio recordings from Canadian Country Music Hall Of Fame artist Michelle Wright, her first new music since the 2013 release of Strong. Other Navigator releases have included Wright’s recording of the Christmas classic “Silver Bells,” released to coincide with A Wright Christmas: 2019 tour across the Alberta and Ontario provinces of Canada.
2020 into 2021 has also given rise to a new breed of creators. Navigator Records has provided major label services and distribution to those independent artists and labels who want to maintain their creative vision without sacrificing ownership or control while assisting established and developing artists eager to build and sustain meaningful careers.

Contact us at musicpodcast@mail.comCan crowdfunding be a viable source for the indie music artist to assist in paying for the project, or cover such things as the cost of getting out on the road touring?
Not all crowdfunding platforms are created equal and Carl Allocco, along with Nicole Hogland from MCRCrowdfund explain to us that with their curated approach, their company is tailored to the indie music artists needs.
They not only show the artist how to raise funding, but can guide artists, after they raise capital, as how to best utilize the funds in order to move the needle forward in their career. They also provide data that crowdfunding is crucial to helping music artists prove to labels, managers, publishers, agents, etc. that their fans will actually participate in their career growth.
At Music Careers Reimagined, Carl and Nicole aim to provide up-and-coming artists with real, honest advice about making it in the music industry. Based in New York and Nashville, these experts approach the field from a distinctive perspective. Their team share one overarching priority: helping the next generation of artists to understand the music business in all of its complexity.
Nowadays, the business is more volatile than ever. The folks at MCRCrowdfund recognize this and look forward to giving the artist the tools needed to ensure they’re equipped for whatever their journey may entail.
Over the span of nearly four decades, Carl Allocco has experienced all aspects of the music industry and has played and recorded with some of the best musicians in the business. As an artist, Carl has been signed to RCA and MCA Records. Early in his career, he was managed by Tommy Mottola (former head of Sony Music) and Camille Barbone (Madonna). In the mid-90s, Carl began working as an independent singer-songwriter in Nashville. In recent years, Carl has managed web and creative services for music companies across the country. He founded MCRCrowdfund in the fall of 2020.
Nicole Hoglund, with more than 15 years of experience in marketing and organizational communication and restructuring, comes to MCRCrowdfund with the drive and expertise to guide musicians on how to successfully crowdfund their next music project.
She has worked with a variety of companies, running the gamut from small businesses and start-ups to Fortune 500 companies, helping each company to grow their bottom lines, teams and goals.

Contact us at musicpodcast@mail.comThe music business is a 10 part process. 9/10th of it is exposing what you have, the 1/10th is the actual product, and that is probably the most important part. But in order for that to be the most important part, you have to find, expose, and promote to that audience. Keep in mind that so much of it today is an “instant gratification” business. An overnight success typically won’t stand the test of time, like a legacy act that took time to develop. It’s not only about the song, but how it (and you) are promoted properly.
On this episode of the Business Side of Music, Joel Wertman who is the CEO of Heartland Network joins us. Born in Toronto, Canada, Joel’s career began in 1977 as a young music artist when he wrote and produced a song that reached the top five in Canada and Europe. After this success, Wertman made the move to Los Angeles where he joined Mushroom Records as a staff producer and writer and went on to record and remix for artists including Heart, Ian Matthews and others.
Under the tutelage of the legendary Mushroom Records’ co-founder Shelly Siegel, Wertman developed his style and passion for music and the recording and producing process. Sadly Joel’s career nearly derailed when Siegel passed away suddenly at the age of 32.
Despite his strong attachment to Siegel, the then 20-something Wertman decided to soldier on and continue to work with top acts before landing executive roles with several record labels including as president of Eureka/EMI, Eureka/BMG, Eureka Records and Sire/Discovery Records. During the 1980s, 90s and 2000s, Wertman was instrumental in the careers of many artists including The Goo Goo Dolls, Heart, KISS, No Doubt, Bush, Young MC and Tiffany, among others.
While continuing his work with music artists under his WhattaGuy Music label, Wertman began developing and producing programming for children, then going on to produce music for Lifetime’s hit reality series “Dance Moms.”
By 2017 Wertman expanded his interests by becoming CEO of The Heartland Network and its sister television networks, Retro TV, Rev’n, The Action Channel and The Family Channel.

On June 1st, 2008, a fire broke out on the backlot of Universal Studios in Hollywood, CA, destroying nearly 175,000 audio master tapes belonging to some of the most well-known artists worldwide, including Peter Frampton, Beck, Sheryl Crow, Elton John, Les Paul, and thousands of others lost forever.
John Kohl, the CEO, and co-founder of TuneGO, is our guest on this episode to discuss the music industry’s biggest challenge: the digitization and secure storage of creative content, preventing such things from happening in the future.
TuneGO is pretty much like having a record label in a box. The company offers the first digital end-to-end platform empowering artists to manage their music careers by developing a secure and unified digital ecosystem where independent artists can take control over the management, storage, promotion, and distribution of their music—as well as intellectual property rights.
In this episode, we also discuss:
About TuneGO
TuneGO serves as a secure, fully integrated digital ecosystem where independent artists control the management, storage, promotion, and distribution of their music –and intellectual property rights to their music.
The TuneGO Vault is a patented cloud-based platform for securely storing and sharing music in digital form, including audio files and the project and stem files (bass, drums, vocals, and melody of a track) from recording sessions.
The TuneGO Vault is not only for individual artists but for record labels as well.
Hidden Beach Recordings recently tapped the Vault as a way to digitally secure its entire back catalog of music, videos, and exclusive digital artwork—as well as all future assets. Their patented technology allows artists to securely manage their digital content and metadata on the same platform they distribute their music—ensuring they are paid all of their royalties.
TuneGO is a first-of-its-kind solution that gives artists and labels complete control over the entire creative process, providing the ability to establish a chain of custody for a song before the minting of a non-fungible token (NFT).

Do you find yourself playing something on your instrument without putting any thought or consciousness into the process? Does it just happen freely without any effort? What makes such people as Elon Musk, Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, and companies like Uber and DropBox become successful in the tech world? And how does that translate into being successful in the music industry?
Meet Shawn Livermore, the best-selling author of “Average Joe: Be the Silicon Valley Tech Genius.”
Ranked best-selling non-fiction book in five separate categories by Amazon, Average Joe covers numerous tech entrepreneurial founders and software developers and the exciting brands or products that they created. It goes deep on a handful of them, narrowly divulging exactly how a few software developers and startup founders created breakthrough tech products like Gmail, Dropbox, Ring, Snapchat, Bitcoin, Groupon, and more. It highlights and unpacks the general hero-worship that the media and our own minds practice about tech founders and tech entrepreneurs. This idealization of tech success can create a paradox, preventing average tech professionals from their own successful journeys. This book provides hard evidence that anyone in tech can create, and anyone on the peripheral of tech can break through to the center where innovation, creativity, and opportunity meet.
The anecdotes, stories, evidence, facts, arguments, logic, principles, and techniques provided in this book have helped individuals and businesses engage in slow creation cycles, improve the morale of their development teams, and increased the delivery potential of their technology solutions overall.

Ad Rev came along in 2011 to help people with their YouTube content ID and work to make sure that you, as the content owner, claim and receive what is due to you.
Noah Becker, who is the founder and President of AdRev, walks us thru what it takes to ensure that your music is protected on such social platforms as YouTube. We talk about how content ID/monetization works and why it is important to ensure a content ID.
AdRev is celebrating its 10th anniversary in the music industry, with over 100 million subscribers in-network and having paid $250 million in revenue to rights owners.

As a co-founder of The Byrds and The Flying Burrito Brothers, Chris Hillman is arguably the primary architect of what’s come to be known as country-rock.
Chris Hillman is much more than a rock star. He is truly a founding father of American music and a man who has faced the challenges of life to discover what really matters.
He was the original bassist and member of The Byrds, which in 1965 included Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark, David Crosby, and Michael Clarke. With frequent collaborator Gram Parsons, Hillman was a key figure in developing country-rock, defining the genre through his work with The Byrds, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Manassas, and the country-rock group The Desert Rose Band.
Chris has now written a book detailing his life in the music business, titled “Time Between My Life as A Byrd, Burrito Brother, and Beyond.”

Do you look at your stems when recording in the studio as a revenue stream, or just layers of your song as a whole?
Audioshake has created the AI technology, which is designed to help the rightsholder to the music to be able to create professional stems without having to go back into the studio. This is perfect for the artist looking to create not only vocal tracks but also segmented files that can be used for music in film and television aspects, without the time and cost of having to go back into the studio to edit and mix the parts needed. Stems can make the difference in setting up a scene in a film or series, and this program provides the tools to do it right. This literally can take the music down to the molecular level if need be.
The idea of creating Audioshake came from Co-Founder and CEO Jessica Powell and her partners wanting to sing Karaoke while over in Japan. Still, their preferred choice of music was Punk, and there weren’t any tracks available to that specific genre of music. Also, they were discovering that they were karaoking to really cheesy sub-standard Midi versions that weren’t close to the real thing, which they felt took away from experience.
Out of those experiences, Audioshake has created the AI technology that will create stems and instrumentals from songs in minutes.
Why does this matter?
People have been working in the field of sound separation for a long time:
Audioshake offers the possibility to help artists and rights holders open up their songs for new uses -- instrumentals for sync licensing, stems for re-mixes, removing bleed from live recordings, creating stems for spatial audio, etc.
Stems have been used in re-mixes, songwriting camps, movies, documentaries, and commercials.
Their company also has an on-demand platform for music labels and publishers who need to create large volumes of stems, and it also provides stem storage.
This program is about helping artists make more money from their work. Audioshake wanted to build something for the industry--not a generally available consumer technology that would allow anyone to pirate artists’ work.
Jessica Powell is the co-founder and CEO of Audioshake, an AI technology that creates professional-quality stems and instrumentals from songs. She has over 15 years of experience in the technology industry. She is a former Vice President of Google, but she got her start in music at CISAC, the international author's rights organization. She is also the author of the best-selling book, The Big Disruption, and writes regularly for the New York Times, TIME magazine, and other publications.

Contact us at musicpodcast@mail.comDespite the past year being an upsetting time for the music industry, it’s still provided a prime opportunity to accomplish a few things in your career. But are you, as an artist doing the right things? Do you have a professional-looking website? Something that you can take ownership of? How established is your email list? Are you using it to contact your fans, or are you relying on social media? We talk with Sarah Fleshner about such things (you need to use your social media as a funnel to your website, not vice versa), along with how she is quickly becoming one of the major players, not only as an entertainment consultant and manager but now branching out into concert production, becoming one of the premier driving influences in the music industry these days.
Sarah Fleshner is the owner of 362 Entertainment. She found her love for music early and started that path at age 13. She spent the rest of her school years running live sound and sitting in on the production of 3 albums. After high school, she toured with a local artist for 7 years, managing and running live sound. In 2019 Sarah decided to start opening her own entertainment company so she could offer services to all artists. In March of 2020, 2 weeks before the pandemic shut down the music world, 362 Entertainment was officially made an LLC. Sarah took advantage of the downtime and poured herself into learning as much as she could. She used zoom calls, online classes and was blessed to have MANY long-time industry geniuses pour wisdom into her life. Based in Texas, 362 Entertainment has found its second home in Nashville, where Sarah has found a love for Nashville’s deep roots. Over the past 12 years, Sarah has worked countless hours helping artists find their way in the music business world. Her passion is to help creative artist get their craft to the public. From the song on the paper to recording it, performing it live, and everything in between. Sarah’s goal is to allow all artists the creative freedom to turn out music that speaks to us all.

In this episode, we chat with Jonathan Taplin regarding his career working with Bob Dylan, along with The Band (Dylan’s back-up band, along with their solo career), his time with George Harrison putting together the legendary Concert For Bangladesh, what it was like to be a part of Woodstock (yes, he was actually there), and how he and Martin Scorsese came to working together on not only on the now legendary documentary "The Last Waltz" but also on a major feature film. This in addition to the 120 concerts he produced over the years.
Jonathan is the author of the book “Move Fast and Break Things” and a new memoir called “The Magic Years - Scenes From A Rock And Roll Life.”
Taplin helped organize the Concert for Bangladesh with George Harrison and the film “The Last Waltz,” also directed by Scorcese. The Concert for Bangladesh (or Bangla Desh, as the country's name, was originally spelt) was a pair of benefit concerts organized by former Beatles guitarist George Harrison and Indian sitar player Ravi Shankar. The shows were held at 2:30 and 8:00 pm on Sunday, 1 August 1971, at Madison Square Garden in New York City to raise international awareness of and fund refugees from East Pakistan following the Bangladesh Liberation War-related genocide. The concerts were followed by a best-selling live album, a boxed three-record set, and Apple Films' concert documentary, which opened in cinemas in the spring of 1972. The event was the first-ever benefit of such a magnitude. It featured a supergroup of performers, including Harrison, fellow ex-Beatle Ringo Starr, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Billy Preston, Leon Russell, and the band Badfinger.
Jonathan Taplin is a writer, film producer, and scholar. He is the Director Emeritus of the Annenberg Innovation Lab at the University of Southern California and was a Professor at the USC Annenberg School from 2003-2016 in international communication management and digital media entertainment. Taplin began his entertainment career in 1969 as Tour Manager for Bob Dylan and The Band. In 1973 he produced Martin Scorsese's first feature film, Mean Streets, selected for the Cannes Film Festival. Between 1974 and 1996, Taplin produced 26 hours of television documentaries (including The Prize and Cadillac Desert for PBS) and 12 feature films including The Last Waltz, Until The End of the World, Under Fire, and To Die. His films were nominated for Oscar and Golden Globe awards and chosen for The Cannes Film Festival five times.

An Impressionist Painter, An Inspired Madman, A Restless Innovator, A True Legend of Jazz Drums, A Master of Drumming Insanity, and a Genius of the Sticks. These are some of the words that describe Grammy Award-winning drummer Paul Wertico.
Hailed in the press as “One of the most versatile and musical drummers in music today,” Paul Wertico was a member of the Pat Metheny Group from 1983 to 2001. During that time, he won seven Grammy Awards (three for Best Jazz Fusion Performance, three for Best Contemporary Jazz Performance, and one for Best Rock Instrumental Performance), won numerous magazine polls, received several gold records, and played drums & percussion on David Bowie’s hit recording (with the Pat Metheny Group), “This Is Not America.”

Paul has also played drums and percussion on hundreds of recordings, including Paul Winter’s Grammy-nominated release, Earth: Voices of a Planet, and four vocalist Kurt Elling’s Grammy-nominated releases. He also hosted his own weekly radio show, Paul Wertico’s Wild World of Jazz, from 2010 to 2012.
Paul is also extremely active in the field of education. You’re not a bit of everyone as an artist, or at least you shouldn’t be. You are your own identity.
Do you have a strategy in place to move your career forward? Are you performing music that fits your lifestyle and belief system, or are you only making the moves to please others or attempting to do so to get ahead?
In the end, it’s all about brand loyalty, with you yourself being the brand. So is your branding vertical, or is it horizontal? Do you know the difference, and does it matter?
On this extraordinary episode of Dead Horse Discussions with Rick Caballo and Melissa Core Caballo from Dead Horse Branding, we interview Michael Blanton to discuss exactly these matters.
Michael Blanton of Brentwood, Tennessee, has celebrated a career in the national and Nashville music industry. But today finds him in all kinds of artistic and entertainment development, not limited to just artist management.
A native of Amarillo, Texas, Blanton got his start in music as an A&R representative at Word Records in Waco, Texas, moving to Nashville in 1978 to open the company’s office on Music Row. He and business partner Dan Harrell launched Blanton/Harrell Production and Management in 1980 with Amy Grant as their first client. In 1981 with friend Brown Bannister (’75), they created Reunion Records and Reunion Publishing and soon launched artists' careers, including Michael W. Smith and Rich Mullins, and Wayne Kirkpatrick.
Blanton served as executive producer for some of Grant’s biggest hits, including the albums Unguarded (1985), Lead Me On (1988), and the multi-platinum Heart in Motion (1992), which sold more than ten million copies and received five Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year. He also executive produced hits for Smith, including his debut, Michael W. Smith Project (1983) featuring the song “Friends,” The Big Picture (1986), i 2 (EYE) (1988), and Change Your World (1992). In addition, Blanton and Harrell worked with authors including Frank Peretti, helping him release his multi-million-selling This Present Darkness in 1986 and Piercing the Darkness in 1989.
Beginning in 1997, Blanton and Harrell served as co-presidents of Gaylord’s Idea Entertainment. Still, in 2009 the golden franchise ended between Blanton and Harrell and thus started the new chapter for Blanton in artist development and branding.
Currently, Blanton has partnered in the development with Songwriting University to help support the songwriters of Nashville and help develop new artistic talent. Also, Blanton is a partner with Vertigo Media and a new management launch called Halogen-BNA. Vertigo and Halogen will work together to build and develop new artists and songwriters thru technology and community. But not to be left out of the development lane, Blanton today is also working with new film projects, with Terry Benedict(producer of Hacksaw Ridge) and TV productions for a Texas non-profit, Heartlight and Parenting Today’s Teens. He has also joined with long-time friend Gary Glover to continue to consult on many projects in development thru a
partnership called Cyprus Creative Partners, a company to helps advance all types of branding and development. Whether for one singer or an entire company, vision-casting and strategically planning are what we are built for.

He serves on the board of Lipscomb’s College of Entertainment and Arts. In addition, the team of Blanton & Harrell was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2017. In this episode, we discuss Matej Harangozo, the creator of Open Source Entertainment, a Record Label, and a Music Business Incubator. He’s also the creator of Digital Science Media.
Matej literally started his first company from the ground up with almost no start-up capital, to a 5 million dollar a year, 50 employee enterprise called “greenNEWit.” Wanting to break into the music industry, he invested $40,000 into studio gear and investing into artists, only to find out that the music business takes a lot more than just money. He soon discovered a world of promoters and marketers who didn’t provide accurate information and numbers when working with his clients.
Ultimately the goal of Open Source Entertainment is to become a full-service incubator and label for the independent artist. In the meantime, OSE provides their marketing services to other clients, nothing with smoke and mirrors but providing real information. Out of that came Digital Science Media.
Currently, his company focuses on the following three pillars of music marketing:
Matej Harangozo is an award-winning entrepreneur, music enthusiast, and innovative technologist. He is a driver of disruption with a track record of developing cutting-edge platforms and automation protocols.
He built a company, “greenNEWit” from the ground up — starting with 0% credit cards to 50-plus employees and $5 million per year in revenue at its peak. During the same time, he bought and scaled an international franchise that employed another 35-plus youth employees in the Baltimore area. A serial entrepreneur and web/software systems visionary, he is currently co-owner and managing partner of Codaemon, an e-commerce solutions provider.
Recently, Harangozo made the pivot to something he is really passionate about: music. It is an industry he dreamt of being in ever since he was in high school. Through his quest to help independent artists, producers, DJs, and influencers get noticed, he created Open Source Entertainment, a record label and music business incubator, and Digital Science Media, its digital marketing arm. As a result, these two organizations disrupt the music industry -- representing breakout artists including Hello Sister, China Mac, the gospel record label Black Smoke Music, and many others under the hip hop industry legend Wendy Day to name a few.
Once recognized by the SBA as a Maryland Young Entrepreneur of the Year, Harangozo lectures at college universities and is a keynote speaker for TEDx and the Musician Mastery Summit. His companies have been featured in Forbes, Entrepreneur Magazine, and The Baltimore Sun.
Harangozo's unique upbringing in Eastern Europe and as a US immigrant has shaped his unique outlook on business, innovation, history, and culture. These attributes are the drivers behind his success and will continue to guide his principles and future endeavors. He resides in Hanover, Maryland, with his girlfriend Courtney and their two dogs.
