Have you ever been hypnotized?
When you hear the word hypnosis, I’m willing to bet the first thing you think of is those stage performances where an audience member is instructed to do something ridiculous. But in reality, hypnosis is so much more than that, and it can truly benefit you in many ways. Whether you want to stress less, sleep better, manage pain, lose weight, overcome fears, or improve professional performance, hypnosis can help you do it.
This week’s Beyond Influential guest, Dr. David Spiegel is the expert when it comes to clinical hypnosis, and his mission is to help destigmatize hypnosis and show you how you can use the power of your own mind to heal and achieve. I wanted to have Dr. Spiegel on because this isn’t pseudoscience; what we discuss today is backed by decades of scientific research and clinical experience.
Dr. Spiegel has a laundry list of accomplishments and accolades, including degrees from Yale and Harvard Medical School. He is currently serving as Willson Professor and Associate Chair of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences, Director of the Center on Stress and Health, and Medical Director of the Center for Integrative Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine, where he has been a member of the academic faculty since 1975.
Dr. Spiegel has more than 40 years of clinical and research experience studying psycho-oncology, stress and health, pain control, sleep, hypnosis, and more. He has published thirteen books, over 400 scientific journal articles, and contributed over 170 book chapters on hypnosis, psychosocial oncology, stress physiology, trauma, and psychotherapy. His research has been supported by the National Institute of Mental Health, the National Cancer Institute, the National Institute on Aging, and several other organizations. He is Past President of the American College of Psychiatrists and the Society for Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis. He was also invited to speak on hypnosis at the World Economic Forum in Davos in 2018.
On top of all of this, Dr. Spiegel is also the Co-Founder and Chief Scientific Officer at Reveri, which is an app designed to help you learn and use the proven techniques of self-hypnosis to experience the benefits of hypnosis quickly and conveniently.
On Ep. 182, we cover:

What if you could see in real-time how what you’re eating affects your health?
We all know we should be “eating healthy”—but what does that mean exactly? Health is not one size fits all and with so much competing advice out there, I’m excited to introduce you to this week’s guest, Dr. Lauren Kelley-Chew.
Lauren is a physician entrepreneur whose background includes private equity, a Y-Combinator backed digital therapeutics startup, and leading strategy and business operations at Verily Life Sciences (formerly Google X) where she focused on devices and emerging products.
She is currently the Head of Clinical Product at Levels Health, a startup dedicated to improving your metabolic health by helping you make better (and tangible) lifestyle choices through personalized data. Levels uses wearable biosensors like continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) to show you how the foods you eat affect your body specifically, in a quantifiable way.
This is incredibly important because metabolic dysfunction and insulin resistance is at epidemic levels in the US and it’s tied to virtually every symptom or disease you can think of—diabetes, Alzheimer’s, high blood pressure, cancer, depression, anxiety, infertility, chronic fatigue, acne, psoriasis, and more. The good news is that it’s largely reversible by making some simple habit changes, which can go a long way in helping to prevent chronic disease and improve your quality of life.
I’ve been excited about what Levels is doing and where they plan to expand. They have an all-star team of MD’s, former SpaceX and Google engineers, advisors including previous guest Dr. Molly Maloof, Dr. Mark Hyman, Dom D'Agostino, Ph.D., Dr. Sara Gottfried, and David Sinclair, Ph.D., and huge investors backing them.
On Ep. 181, we cover:

This episode is all about a topic that needs to be discussed more openly, especially for women… and that’s money.
Like it or not, money is a necessity in our society and it’s also an important source of power, which means it is incredibly important to feel confident and empowered when it comes to anything related to your finances. And whether you’re aware of it or not, everyone has a unique relationship and internal dialogue around money that affects your monetary habits, behaviors, and decisions.
This week’s guest is a leading authority on helping women transform their relationship with wealth and power so you can live up to your financial and personal potential. Barbara Huson (previously known as Barbara Stanny), is a bestselling author, financial therapist & wealth coach who has helped millions take charge of their finances and their lives. She has been featured on countless outlets including Good Morning America, The View, Extra, CNN, MSNBC, CNBC, Fox News, PBS, NPR, the New York Times, and USA Today.
The reason I wanted to have Barbara on as a guest specifically is because of her unique experience, expertise, and ability to educate that separates her from other money mindset coaches out there.
Barbara is the bestselling author of 7 money books (linked below)—I’ve read several of them and I can’t recommend them enough. Her latest book, Rewire for Wealth: Three Steps any Woman Can Take to Program Her Brain For Financial Success is easily one of my favorites ever written on the topic and we dig into what you need to know in this in-depth conversation.

I thought now would be a great time to reshare the most popular Beyond Influential interview of all time, Episode 45 with Melissa Wood-Tepperberg, aka Melissa Wood Health, on Tapping into Your Passion & Staying Unfiltered in an Instagram World. And while I’m sure there have been a few changes in the specific details as she’s scaled, the conversation still holds up today.
Since this episode was recorded, I’ve loved watching the growth and evolution of Melissa’s brand and business. (At the time, I hadn’t tried her workouts, but since then they’ve really helped out when I fell off the workout wagon during the pandemic.)
Melissa Wood-Tepperberg is the founder of the MWH method, a certified yoga and pilates instructor, meditator, a proponent of plant based diets, and most importantly a mom of two. Melissa regularly creates health & wellness content for a VERY devoted audience online.
While the wellness influencer space is saturated with perfectly curated feeds, what's interesting about Melissa's brand is that she prefers to share her journey unfiltered, from her photos to her personal struggles to get to this point. She has been open about her journey from severe anxiety and an awful eating disorder and has been using her platform to help de-stigmatize these topics.
