Submit ReviewWe have a very special guest on today’s chat! We welcomed our baby boy and are over the moon to be starting this next chapter of our adventure together. We’re taking a little break from the podcast to enjoy this time as we navigate our new roles as parents (and try to catch some zzz’s… although that's probably wishful thinking!). We’ll be back with lots of questions and reflections. Until then, we’ll just be right here, soaking it all in (literally)…
Thank you for all the love and support!

We’ve received a lot of great advice from friends and family as we prep to welcome our first baby! One of our friends told us about cord blood storage - something we knew nothing about. After looking into it, we decided to hop on a chat with Dr. Jaime Shamonki, Chief Medical Officer at Cord Blood Registry, to talk all about the science and the why behind collecting and storing our baby’s cord blood and tissue.
Dr. Jaime Shamonki is a mom of two. She trained in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at New York Presbyterian Hospital – Weill Cornell Medical College and has completed fellowships at Weill Cornell as well as the University of California, Los Angeles. Prior to joining Generate Life Sciences, Dr. Shamonki developed expertise in women's health and clinical laboratory medicine, serving as the Director of Breast Pathology and Blood Bank Medical Director at Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, CA, and as an Assistant Professor at the John Wayne Cancer Institute.

Now is always a good time to talk about anxiety. Although we’re feeling okay presently, we know that the wonderful adventure of parenthood will also come with many challenges that will test our relationship with ourselves and one another.
Enter Dr. Ellen Vora.
Dr. Vora is a holistic psychiatrist, acupuncturist, and yoga teacher. She takes a functional medicine approach to mental health—considering the whole person and addressing imbalance at the root. Dr. Vora received her B.A. from Yale University and her M.D. from Columbia University, and she is board-certified in psychiatry and integrative holistic medicine.
More than 40 million Americans suffer from anxiety in any given year, a number that has only increased as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. We’ve long thought of anxiety as a “neck up” problem—a problem of brain chemistry and psychology, but now in The ANATOMY OF ANXIETY: Understanding and Overcoming the Body's Fear Response, acclaimed psychiatrist Dr. Ellen Vora offers nothing less than a paradigm shift in the way we understand anxiety and mental health. Vora suggests that the symptoms of anxiety are frequently the result of physical imbalance—that is, anxiety is a whole-body condition, not simply a brain condition. In the same way that Bessel van der Kolk’s bestselling The Body Keeps Score changed how we understand trauma, The Anatomy of Anxiety will transform our understanding of anxiety.
The good news is that this body-based anxiety is treatable—simple solutions include: getting our circadian rhythm back on track; limiting caffeine, and becoming aware of blood sugar and its contribution to “hanxiety.”

Our friend, Jeff Ullrich, joins us to answer our questions about autism. April is Autism Awareness Month and we’re excited to understand more from Jeff, who learned that he was autistic in January 2020, at the age of 45.
Jeff is a podcast OG - co-founded Earwolf in 2010, founded Midroll Media in 2013 and Howl in 2015. He then sold all three companies in 2015 for a number of reasons (he’ll explain!).
Now, he has launched Dove Orchids, a 100% autistic owned and operated for-profit company with a mission to work with peers, partners and allies to improve the quality of life for autistic people while also improving workplaces, homes and lives for everyone — because he and the team at Dove Orchids understand that everyone (not just those who are autistic) benefits from including autistic people because they bring unique insights and valuable contributions.
They work to reduce stigma and increase opportunities while creating a world where autistic people are the authorities of their own lives; are understood, accepted, and valued for who they truly are.

With less than two months to go until baby arrives, it’s time to soak up some real, raw advice about being a mom, parenting with our partners and… how much birthing is going to hurt! I gather mama Scott and two of my sisters, Hanna and April — who are all at very different stages of mumming — and chat about whatever comes to mind when it comes to having a baby.

There’s a lot that we need to care about and sometimes it can seem a bit daunting… and even shameful, if we don’t know enough about the things we should know about! One area we have set out to learn more about is how the heck government works and how can we not feel so helpless?
That’s where Ben Sheehan comes in.
His goal is to make regular civic participation — even beyond voting — a regular part of all of our daily lives, like flossing our teeth -- we do it a little bit, every day, and it's good for our overall long-term health (both individually and as a country)
Formerly an award-winning producer at Funny Or Die, Sheehan uses his experience in comedy and his education and unique upbringing in Washington to create easy-to-understand, non-intimidating, comedic videos to teach people about how our government works and how we can all make an impact.
Originally from the D.C. area, Sheehan graduated with high honors from Emory University with a B.A. in Political Science and American Studies, and holds an M.A. in Music Business from New York University. The videos he’s been involved with have received over a billion views. For the 2016 election, his comedic videos helped get 50,000 voters registered! In 2018 he was named one of the entertainment industry’s “NextGen: 35 Rising Executives Under 35” by The Hollywood Reporter.

We’re so happy to be experiencing a birth class as deep as this one. When researching various classes, we weren’t sure what to look for beyond laboring positions and pain management (which she gets into as well and are super important!). So when we signed up for Dr. Britta Bushnell’s Childbirth Class, which covers topics far beyond the technical aspects of birth, we immediately felt this was just what we needed. It has helped us recognize and embrace all the transformations we’re going through individually and as a couple.
Dr. Britta Bushnell (she/her) is a wife and mother, a specialist in childbirth, relationship dynamics, and parenthood. A veteran childbirth educator, for over 20 years, Dr. Bushnell has worked with individuals and couples as they prepare for the life-changing experience of giving birth. Her work with parents has been enriched by her doctoral work in mythology and psychology, her years spent as former co-owner of Birthing From Within, as well as her study of solution-focused practice, storytelling, and relationship tools to help romantic partnerships thrive even during parenthood.
She is a celebrated speaker, mythologist, and author of Transformed by Birth. We can’t wait for you to hear what she has to share!
