Welcome to the latest episode of the Wonder Twins Power Podcast with Iain Kidd and Stephie Haynes. This show is an offshoot of the Three Amigos Podcast that allows us to delve a little deeper into current MMA issues that warrant closer inspection and conversation. Saturday night, UFC Denver took place and with it, a bit of controversy ensued with one of the fights on the undercard. Chas Skelly lost his bout with Bobby Moffett via D’arce/Brabo choke when referee Tim Mills divined that Skelly was completely out after lifting one of Skelly’s arms during the choke and making a split-second assessment that he was unconscious when Chas didn’t react fast enough. The second Mills called off the fight, Skelly, as though he were never out (possibly because he never actually was), became infuriated that he wasn’t allowed another moment or two for extra assessment. We discuss the dangers of blood chokes and compare a past fight where a referee really waited too long to wave off a contest while a fighter was locked up in a choke versus the Skelly bout, where the referee likely didn’t wait long enough, as well as the inherent damage that can be done to a career with a loss that might have been overcome if the fighter had been given the opportunity that just five more seconds might’ve afforded him/her. The second topic revolves around weight-cutting and hydration/dehydration via our special guest, Oliver Barley, lecturer and PhD candidate in exercise physiology at Edith Cowan University in Australia. Barley has written studies on how much weight combat sports athletes cut, what effect dehydration has on performance and what factors are behind the decreased performance in dehydrated/rapidly rehydrated athletes.
