Changes in the music industry have preceded the shift in publishing: physical to digital formats and now streaming and micro-payments; musicians choosing to go indie instead of joining big labels; and the need for multiple streams of income and building an audience online. Today, I explore these changes with David Kusek. In the intro, I mention statistics about Amazon from Jane Friedman and a discussion on the dominance of Amazon imprints in the charts on the International Indie Author Facebook Group. Draft2Digital shared a quote from Hugh Howey this week: “I think we are just moments away from entering an age where indie writers will have the same cachet as indie film-makers and indie musicians. Here’s a far-off prediction: I think we’ll see a point in our lifetimes where traditionally published material is made to appear self-published in order to give it street cred.” Interesting, given that the UK Guardian reported on big brand bookstore Waterstones launching tiny, independent-looking stores in small towns. In my personal update, I'm back in the UK and writing a lot (happily!). I also share my thoughts on The Fourth Transformation: How Augmented Reality and Artifical Intelligence will change everything by Robert Scoble and Shel Israel. This episode is sponsored by my audiobooks, How to Make a Living with Your Writing and The Successful Author Mindset, both available now on Audible, iTunes and Amazon as audiobooks, as well as ebook and print formats.
