A specialist in military medicine with expertise in toxic substances says the eruption at Whakaari/White Island would have released the toxic gas hydrogen sulphide, which causes breathing difficulties. Thirty people remain in hospital, many with inhalation burns. Associate Professor David McBride is from the Dunedin School of Medicine.
