But I use some external hard drives to expand my memory for recording movies and TV shows. I know you have to format the new hard drives when you plug them into the DVR. The Hopper will try to format your drives and even if it didnt it would almost certainly store recordings in a different format. Unfortunately, this is one of those you dont buy the media youre just licensed to use it situations. Your recordings are basically long term rentals and if you switch devices you will almost certainly lose them. There arent good ways to get around that either, you cant legally transfer them and theyre typically encrypted, so you cant easily illegally play them. You will have to choose between your old recording and a new DVR.
