You won’t believe the homages to 1960’s & 70’s cinematic history. Pixar proved once again that they’re unafraid of massive risks. After hit after hit, they made a 200 million dollar silent movie about a robot falling in love with another robot set in perhaps the darkest dystopian universe we’ve ever seen in a non-rated R film. Are you kidding me?
It’s also one of the most ambitious films from a production standpoint. We breakdown all of the behind the scenes animation innovations in non-spoilers, and then we have more insight into the storytelling principles on display with our analysis of Rule 10 of Pixar’s 22 Rules of Storytelling. We close with a bunch of great scenes that both break our hearts and make us happy as we relive the plot, and it’s perhaps our most gushy review yet in this re-watch.
If you enjoyed this episode, do click on our other Pixar film reviews. We’re doing shows on all 20 movies in the lead up to Toy Story 4. Some episodes feature one film, some two, and we’ll even have an upcoming episode reviewing all three Cars movies. Thus far, we’ve reviewed Toy Story, Monsters Inc & Monsters University, A Bug’s Life, The Incredibles & The Incredibles 2, Finding Nemo & Finding Dory, and Ratatouille. Wall-E marks our 7th episode in the series, and we’ve also included our recent 1995/96’ Best Original Song category overview on Toy Story’s “You’ve Got a Friend in Me,” and our Oscar Sprint Profile review of Incredibles 2 in “The Films of Pixar” playlist now on Soundcloud. It’s been a joyous re-watch so far. We hope you enjoy.
