The US Air Force plans to deploy a fleet of more than 1,000 AI-operated drones for future air warfare. The drones, referred to as "loyal wingmen," will be led by a piloted jet and used in collaborative combat missions. To showcase the capabilities of these autonomous aircraft, Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall will personally fly in one of the modified F-16s during a flight. The aim of using AI-operated drones is to enhance the Air Force's capabilities while minimizing costs and reducing risks faced by human operators. These drones could be especially valuable in potential conflicts with China, where sending manned crews close to combat may be risky due to upgraded anti-access capabilities and advanced air defense systems.
