Israeli strikes on Gaza continue as the conflict between Hamas militants and Israel escalates. The grief and horror of this situation is deep, and can feel all consuming. It can be hard to make sense of this crisis and how it came to this point. Soundside host Libby Denkmann caught up with three experts in experts in history, human rights and colonialism to understand the war between Israel and Hamas, as well as the Palestinian civilians caught up in the conflict.

Editors note, 11:39am on Wednesday, 10/18/23: An earlier version of this podcast placed blame for the hospital bombing in Gaza on Israeli airstrikes. That was based on available reporting Tuesday morning. The source of the explosion is now disputed, and we have removed that portion of the audio.
